To be underwhelmed and not a little angry about misleading banana peeling advice?

Ok so I read on a MN Classics thread that I've been peeling bananas the wrong way for 40 odd years (how stupid did I feel?) and that there was an incredible, life-changing way to open said fruit. It's a secret monkeys have known for thousands of years.

The MNetters on this thread were astonished and thrilled by this discovery.

I gathered my children, told them 'Hurry, get a banana, I have something amazing to show you!'.

Went on to Youtube to view a video that has had THREE AND A HALF MILLION hits of a guy showing you how to peel a banana the correct way. In his preamble he tells us this demo will change our lives.

He pinches the banana at non-stalk end and peels it. And, err, that's it. It didn't peel itself. The skin didn't pop off. He just didn't have to wrestle with the stalk. My son says 'That was crap'.

WTF? Angry

Leave the bastards!

diddl · 09/09/2012 09:06

I agree.

I still do it the "wrong" way.

Proudnscary · 09/09/2012 09:13

Yes I actually find it easier to grab the stalk aggressively and yank skin off in manner of ravenous Neanderthal.

(I do however have an amazing apple corer/slicer that I got from some God awful Pampered Chef party for £3000 or something. But at least it works and you get a few 'oohs' and 'ahhs' from visiting children)

I've heard that before, and tried it for a bit and then reverted to my old ways of stalk pulling. Didn't really get what the difference was?

floradix · 09/09/2012 09:15
Envy

I covet your apple corer and want a pic to drool over.

Proudnscary · 09/09/2012 09:19

Hold on flora I'll try to find it but please be warned I am a kitchen dunce and don't cook at all - so I might have hypocritically oversold the apple corer

OhEmmGee!

I have ordered one. Blush

HarlettOScara · 09/09/2012 10:17

I was similarly underwhelmed with the banana peeling advice and have reverted to using the stalk end like most normal people

However, investing £2.99 in a cherry stoner has changed my life.

dearprudence · 09/09/2012 10:18

I was on that banana thread and I did think it was fascinating, but not life changing. I was much more amazed to learn that pineapples don't grow on trees.

Does that contraption slice the apples as well? It looks like something from woodwork class.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 09/09/2012 10:20

Where do pineapples grow

laurenamium · 09/09/2012 10:24

Where do pineapples grow?!

floradix · 09/09/2012 10:27

pineapples not growing on trees Shock

Who knew?

MammaTJisWearingGold · 09/09/2012 10:29

Oh Proud those corer, slicer thingies are fab for kids lunch box apples. Just do it and leave the apple together, wrap in cling film and it is still intact/non brown at lunch time.

Hassled · 09/09/2012 10:30

:o at the banana-peeling damp squib.

My best fruit peeling related gadget is the Lakeland pineapple whatsit. That truly has revolutionised my pineapple-eating ways.

I saw a woman demonstrating that alternative method of peeling a banana. I was expecting something far more interesting than just peeling from the non-stalk end.
However, I did take issue with the fact that she described her method as peeling the banana 'upside-down'. Bananas grow upward from the stalk, so the 'normal' way to peel them is, in fact, upside-down.

overmydeadbody · 09/09/2012 10:33

The babana thing is a good one to show little children who sometimes struggle to peel bananas stalk first when the bananas aren't fully ripe. If the bananas are deliciously ripe with brown spots and thin soft peel then it doesn't make any difference, they're easy to peel stalk first.

picnicbasketcase · 09/09/2012 10:34

It blew my mind a few months back to see those pictures of growing pineapples. Told MIL and she laughed her arse off, 'where did you get the idea that they grew on TREES?' like it's so obvious they grow on plants near the ground!

MammaTJisWearingGold · 09/09/2012 10:34

I mean this one.

diddl · 09/09/2012 10:53

What I don´t like about peeling not using the stalk is the crappy bit that needs getting rid of.

If you peel with the stalk, that bit just gets left in the skin.

Also, if it won´t peel easily with the stalk-doesn´t that mean that it´s not fully ripe?

Mayisout · 09/09/2012 11:24

I knew it, they haven't dealt with the horrible little black stalky bit in the non-stalk end. Tosspots.

If, however, you use your nail to cut into the banana at the stalk end, then slowly peel it you just squeeze the non-stalk end slightly as you peel down to that end and the horrible black stalky thing comes away WITH THE PEEL and the upshot is that YOU DON'T GET SQUIDGED BANANA UNDER YOUR FINGERNAILS BY HAVING TO PICK OFF THE BLACK BIT WITH YOUR FINGERS LIKE THE TOSSPOTS ON YOUTUBE!

Mayisout · 09/09/2012 11:26

Ooops missed diddl saying the same thing (quietly).

Lougle · 09/09/2012 11:27

But it is revolutionary! You get a handle when you peel from the non stalk end. No more squidgy banana.

ThickCut · 09/09/2012 11:35

Oh my stars! Pineapples! I never knew that!

As David Brent would say, never assume, it makes an ass of u and me Grin
