Inspired by another thread in chat, what does middle class mean to you?

I seriously don't know. Aibu?

I think it is a bit sad if people are genuinely choosing things like musical tastes and size of tv based on what class they think they belong to.

MrsKeithRichards · 08/09/2012 23:40

Can we play bingo?

Waitrose

Boden

National trust properties

Anymore for anymore?

MrsKeithRichards · 08/09/2012 23:42

I have 3proper 4x4's in bits on my drive.

MrsKeithRichards · 08/09/2012 23:43

If you have to, or have to rely on someone else to work you're working class!

scarlettsmummy2 · 08/09/2012 23:45

I think 4x4s are a bit of a red herring (and I had a Chelsea tractor so have nothing against them), as really people from every class go for them, from Wayne Rooney to the queen!

FreudiansGoldSlipper · 08/09/2012 23:48

4x4 is not the mc car, its an aldi estate

well it is very popular around here

NellyJob · 08/09/2012 23:48

long standing middle classes don't have 4 x4, and don't dress the kids in Boden
that's right, they have filthy old estate cars and scruffy kids with snot on their faces and shout 'what?'

NellyJob · 08/09/2012 23:49

lol FGS

TheLastRavenhope · 08/09/2012 23:49

"That's like saying you don't believe in
cheese. Or Manchester."

This made me spray coffee across my living room! Grin

trumpeter · 08/09/2012 23:51

An aldi estate? Do Lidl do one too?

WAD · 08/09/2012 23:51

Blingy new cars are a dubious indicator I'd say. The older the car, the higher the so called 'class' IME.

ninah · 08/09/2012 23:51

living room? now that's mc
i hope it was cafetiere

scarlettsmummy2 · 08/09/2012 23:51

Actually nelly you are right- people who have money, and are I suppose upper middle class do not give a stuff about image and other middle class badges!!

WAD · 08/09/2012 23:52

sorry x post with Nelly...

larks35 · 08/09/2012 23:52

meow cat, please note I didn't claim to have the answer and considering I've worked in factories, ware-houses, call-centres and retail prior to training as a teacher, then by my own description I have moved between classes.

Class may be outdated and may be perceived as prejudice but to claim we live in a classless society is just plain wrong.

WAD · 08/09/2012 23:52

Lol at 'aldi' estate.

Aldi is quite MC though.

GreenD · 08/09/2012 23:54

Lidl is middle-class IMO. Tesco is working-class.

scarlettsmummy2 · 08/09/2012 23:54

Having a shiny new range rover sport, designer hand bag and kids in Boden immediately marks you out as being a bit new money at my daughters prep school. And actually the mums like that are the most snobby and least friendly. Sorry if that offends but it's true.

trumpeter · 08/09/2012 23:55

Proper mc folk look like tramps ime.

WAD · 08/09/2012 23:55

Green. Yup.

And 'farmers' markets' and delis etc too try-hard / pretentious. A carrot is a carrot.

Sainsburys is MC.

FreudiansGoldSlipper · 08/09/2012 23:56

must have been thinking of my shopping list

TheLastRavenhope · 08/09/2012 23:56

tethersend · 08/09/2012 23:57

A cowboy walks into a German car showroom:

"Audi"

tethersend · 08/09/2012 23:57

(Nothing to do with class, just tickled me)

ninah · 08/09/2012 23:58
