Inspired by another thread in chat, what does middle class mean to you?

I seriously don't know. Aibu?

@ceeveebee I agree. The "middle class" people weren't like anyone I know and I am v middle class. They were lower middle class with some cash if anything. Most middle class people aren't that wealthy and most middle class people have better taste!

BonnieBumble · 10/09/2012 09:45

Ethel middle class does not automatically mean you have good taste!

Anyone seen a 50 something middle class man with orange cords?

DaveMccave · 10/09/2012 09:50

If you don't believe in class, or know what class you are, then you are middle class, ime. No working class person in their right mind would have the disgrace to deny it. Obviously, class doesn't apply to everyone, some people belong in both classes, or move around the classes, but the class system certainly exists.

Teamed with browned tassley loafers Grin

My uncle is probably lower middle class dad was a manager of a factory mum was from a nice background, and he is in his 70s and some of his golf jumper cord combos are a sight to behold Grin

Mrsjay · 10/09/2012 09:53

He isn't in late 60s

Mrsjay · 10/09/2012 09:54

not sure what this means TBH

ceeveebee · 10/09/2012 10:20

I think what Grayson was saying was that 'old' middle class people (Tunbridge Wells) were more confident of their own taste whereas 'new' middle class (Kingsmill) were less so and needed the brand names to validate their style choices.
Perhaps middle class people all think they have good taste, whereas other classes either don't know or don't care!!

DaveMccave · 10/09/2012 10:25

Well no, I'm not surprised. You've probably been born into a comfortable middle class family.

Mrsjay · 10/09/2012 10:35

Well no, I'm not surprised. You've probably been born into a comfortable middle class family.

wow you got all that from 1 question, you have no idea what I was born into

Socknickingpixie · 10/09/2012 10:37

a lady i know and personally think is delightfull is probally mc and would define herself as such and yep i would say her taste probally very much fits in with what others would describe as mc but in my view her taste is bland uninspiring and pretty much exactly the same as all the other people she knows who define themselves as mc.

mostly eveybody thinks they have good taste after all isant taste just what you 'like' you wouldnt like it if you didnt think it was good/nice, but i think when it comes to some people its more about if you think your neighbours think you have good taste iyswim?

ceeveebee · 10/09/2012 10:37

mrsjay i wasn't sure whether that comment was aimed at you or me - obviously dave hasn't bothered to read the thread or would know this to be very wrong!!

SnowWide · 10/09/2012 10:52

Wow, this is even more complex and impenetrable than the caste system I grew up with in India.

On another note, are immigrants outside these "class"ifications? By its very definition, someone new to the country cant be upper class, right? Landed gentry etc... I was MC back home Grin

Mrsjay · 10/09/2012 11:30

obviously dave hasn't bothered to read the thread or would know this to be very wrong!!

Nothing worse than somebody stomping over a thread eh

BoerWarKids · 10/09/2012 11:35

ceeveebee The blonde woman Grayson interviews is Kate Fox author of Watching the English!

I couldn't believe the people on that housing estate thought they were middle class.

ChazsGoldAttitude · 10/09/2012 11:38

SnowWide

I am puzzled by the same question re immigrants. I am in some ways stereotypically middle middle class - Uni educated, professional role, children in private schools etc but DH arrived here as a penniless immigrant from North Africa. I doubt he has the first idea how the British class system works nor what the class "markers" are. Lucky man Grin

ceeveebee · 10/09/2012 11:39

Oh was it Kate Fox?? Funny I recommended her book right at the start of this thread but didn't see that it was her - was watching while feeding DCs in the dark so not completely focused!! I just thought it was a very switched on Tunbridge wellian!!

Socknickingpixie · 10/09/2012 11:45

Really sock? Who would have thought it, a working class lass like me recommending books on mumsnet, my gran would spin in her pauper's grave!!

aquashiv · 10/09/2012 12:04

It means absolutley nothing to me. The only time I hear people describe themselves as middle class is when they are pretending to be respectable types who never say say fuck it or shit bag.

Socknickingpixie · 10/09/2012 12:07

yep if its any consolation my grandma would be very Hmm at me using amazon Grin

scarlettsmummy2 · 10/09/2012 20:24

Original- I went to a grammar school. Didn't fail my eleven plus and have to go to a secondary if that is what you are implying!

Harleyband · 10/09/2012 20:46

It's much easier here in the US where EVERYONE is middle class- even Mitt Romney.
I always thought it had to do with your occupation in Britain and, at least in Scotland, moving class was possible. My mum and dad grew up working class but they became a teacher and doctor so we grew up middle class. My mum had a different accent for each situation.

ceeveebee · 10/09/2012 20:56

Scarlett are you very old? Because we haven't had the eleven plus and the grammar/secondary system in England for a long long time other than in very few areas.
