to suspect an employee of my mobile phone company has used my details fraudulently?

I got a text this morning from my mobile phone company congratulating me on my new upgrade and to expect my new phone soon. Except I hadn't asked for an upgrade. So I rang them quickly. They informed me I had upgraded to an Iphone and should be expecting my new phone in a different city at the other end of the country to where I live, I have no connections with this area at all. It has now been cancelled, I hope, and I had to go to my local store to prove who I was and put 'special instructions' on my account as added security. We had a bit of a chat about checking my security on my laptop and how my DP knows computer security well. Drama over. Then me and DP started to talk, try to work out how someone got all my details. Then we began to realise,

  1. I didn't even realise I had an upgrade due.
  2. I haven't added any apps or other products to my phone in 6 months or so and only ever free ones.
  3. I possibly haven't ever logged into my phone account on this lap top ever, if I have it would have been last time I changed phone, so a couple of years ago.
  4. I don't discuss any details of my phone contract with anyone except DP, why would you?
  5. I don't know the answers to all my security questions, so I couldn't have told anyone.
So who would know all this information? DP kept saying the easiest way to hack a company is to join the company. They would, it was done online. You could easily take your time filling in the forms, copying from paper. And just to add salt to the wound I hate Iphones.

Your provider should be investigating this themselves. Every network has a fraud department to whom this should have been escalated immediately. If it hasn't been, then you need to ring the customer services up right away and insist that it's passed on to the fraud team. Even if it wasn't done by someone within the company, the fraud team will do their utmost to track down where and how the upgrade was performed.

I've worked for a few mobile networks and there are far more incidents like this than you'd believe :(

Yes it was my mobile company as it was the same number as the others texts from them, i.e. your bill is available online, and I rang them and spoke to several different people.
Ken as I was saying it wasn't me and it was fraud, and that she told me to go and secure my account in a shop I assume it would have been passed on, though she didn't say, would it have been anyway?

My phone got sent for repair for 2 months back in the day, when I was young, stupid and my mother paid my phone contract

I accidentally sent my sim card in the phone

Returned with no sim and then got loads of £90 phone bills!!! (phones4u had tricked my mother Ono taking out a new contract so she had two on the go - one being useless and told nothing they could do Hmm )

Rang to
Complain and they said tough, the contracts in your name! Despite the fact they claimed to have destroyed the sim card!!!

Had to get mr justice from the Sunday sun involved (the north east paper, not the new one) and got a full refund in everything.

There are proper arseholes in the world

Grrr, just discovered an e-mail from my phone company thanking them for my visit to their website and logging in. I don't know enough information to log in to my account Angry

What company was it? The exact same thing happened to my friend about a year ago, she was with Vodaphone. The only thing I'd be a bit Hmm about is the fact that if someone who worked there did it they'd surely know that you'd receive a text regarding the upgrade and then have time to go "Wtf" and get in contact to query it.

I thought that when an employee accesses the systems for most things it is logged on the system. So it wouldn't be too hard to trace it back if so.

Totally possible. A guy who worked for the same phone company I used to was under investigation for £15k of fraud doing the same thing.

Phew, feeling a bit better now. Just called the company, everything has been reverted back to before the upgrade, price plans, etc, my account is locked until the fraud department has finished the investigations.
