to think if you call yourself a 24hr emergency plumber

you should bloody well be a 24hr emergency plumber.

I've finally found someone to come out after an hour on the phone but this after making five phone calls to plumbers who advertise as '24hr emergency' callouts. I hate having to wake people up so I especially looked for the ones that specified all hours.

One didn't answer and went to voicemail (0800 number)
Second didn't have anyone available after keeping me waiting twenty minutes
Third could only do it in five hours
Fourth (I'm looking at you AA) told me they didn't actually sent people out but would try fix by phone but he had no idea what the problem was.
Fifth will hopefully be arriving in the next half hour.

In the mean time, I have water all over the kitchen floor and my taps are making a godforsaken noise.

Grrrrrrr!

I know someone's going to come on and tell me that since I did probably wake people up at 2 in the morning that I should be a bit more understanding but they're all billing themselves as 24 hours!

Okay, rant over. I shall patiently wait for the man who said he will turn up.

Nope. When our ceilings collapsed, (tank burst) or insurer gave us a list of emergency plumbers to call out. All said 24 hours. Only two out of 18 were and the one that could come was 90 minutes away.

Have you switched the water off?

Lastofthepodpeople · 06/09/2012 03:22

Yes, all off and the plumbers here now. Hopefully this'll get sorted out.

Fx it's a straight forward fix Smile

Our neighbour is a plumber who advertises 24 hours service. He was telling us once of someone who ranted at him in the middle of the night when he said he wouldn't be able to get to her for another 6 hours. She apparently shouted that he was only 15 miles away, so it shouldn't take that long - he replied (probably in his usual icy cool laid back style) that yes, she was indeed right, that was the approximate distance involved, but 8 of those miles were water and he'd have to wait for a ferry... Not in the Isle of Wight are you op? Grin

Hope it's an easy and inexpensive fix op.

No, in London (and checked all were London based). So far, so good. I've got my water back on but can't use kitchen taps. That'll be done later today.

After doing up our last property it absolutely amazed me just how lazy and unwilling so many tradesmen are and how they falsely advertise!

Honestly it's incredible. They hand pick the easy jobs which they over charge for and turn down anything that may need a bit more effort. You wouldn't think the country was in a double dip rescission and people were struggling for employment!

gallifrey · 06/09/2012 10:18

My dad is a plumber, as was his dad before him so he knows his stuff, he turns up when he is supposed to and on time, he doesn't charge the earth either and he can't get any work at all.

He only worked one day this week and this has been going on for ages :(

Saltycopporn · 06/09/2012 12:39

Yabu. Just because they advertise does not mean they have to accept the work you are offering. Perhaps they were already attending to calls?

Floggingmolly · 06/09/2012 13:06

Maybe they mean three 8 hour days...

ClaimedByMe · 06/09/2012 13:11

I cant get a plumber at all to fix a drippy valve at the main water tap, they arent interested in doing little jobs like that just big jobs, I have been trying since April, I feel your plumbing pain OP!

SamuelWestsMistress · 06/09/2012 13:13

Grin Floggingmolly. Over one month?

Saltycopporn · 06/09/2012 14:43

Sammywest why does turning down work make a trades person lazy? I think there is a gap in your logic!
