To be feeling murderous that this women just asked if I was pregnant again?

I have two children aged 4 and 10 months. Just bumped into a friend of a friend and she coyly indicated my stomach and said 'AAAAHHHHHH!' I edged away thinking she was a bit weird and then she said 'Are you adding to your family then?!' I stuttered something like 'not that I know of' and she said 'oh no me and my big mouth! Shoot me now hahaha!'
This is especially galling as I have just lost a few pounds and I am back in my old jeans. I don't have a flat stomach and frankly I don't expect to again, but I don't look pregnant! or do I? I know I shouldn't let this upset me but it really has spoilt my day.

That happened to me when dd was about 4 months. I went to the bank to open a savings account and the women asked me when the baby was due. I said, 4 months ago, and she started sniggering Angry

HugeFurryWishingStool · 05/09/2012 16:36

Were you wearing an empire line top or baggy shirt?

WorraLiberty · 05/09/2012 16:37

If it was a genuine mistake, I wouldn't worry about it...I'm sure she's more mortified than you.

I've said that to someone in the past and quickly learnt to say instead, "Are you planning any more children?"

That way if they actually are pregnant, the point to their bellies and say yes Blush

AKissIsNotAContract · 05/09/2012 16:38

Don't worry. I've never even had kids yet I've been mistaken for being pregnant. In my case it was a maxi dress!

MattDamonIsMyLover · 05/09/2012 16:38

Argh, someone asked me when it's due. My youngest is 5. My excuse is I've just returned from summer holidays. Don't let it spoil your day.

PedanticPanda · 05/09/2012 16:41

This happened to me too, I have quite bad IBS though and had just finished tucking into something I shouldn't have eaten so my stomach had swollen up a bit. She commented that I was pregnant again and when I said no she got really uncomfortable. She is a bit of a bitch so I stood there enjoying her desperately trying to dig her way out of her hole she kept on digging Grin.

woopsidaisy · 05/09/2012 16:43

My parents told me I looked like I was heading up to the hospital to have another....two days after giving birth to DS3.
I used the mumsnet favourite "did you mean that to sound so rude?". They at least had the decency to blush.
Honestly. Hmm

Redwhine · 05/09/2012 16:44

I was wearing a vest and jeans... Feeling so happy to be back in those jeans! Clearly a mistake. The worst moment was watching her laugh with her friend afterwards. Perhaps not relevant but they were both considerably bigger than me, but I would not have dreamt of asking them their due dates!

I am skinny. Was asked if I was preg again as 'someone had said'. Small village, big gossip. My friend, who is not skinny, would be the old woman in the shoe if the gossips had been right every time.

I'm sure she was feeling dreadful about it, I would. Can understand you being gutted though as you have managed to loose some.

WorraLiberty · 05/09/2012 16:46

FWIW the laugh was probably an "Oh trust me!" sort of laugh

I think I did the same thing when I realised I'd put my foot in it Blush

I've since learnt never to assume anyone's pregnant and never to assume an older person pushing a pram, is actually the Grandparent and not the parent!

SpicyPear · 05/09/2012 16:47

No kids here and a lady I see dog walking recently said "Good luck" and patted her tummy at me. I was mortified so feel your pain.

I don't understand why people say anything. Now as far as I'm concerned you're not pregnant until you tell me, no matter how big you are!

Pocketsocks · 05/09/2012 16:49

Both my parents and my in laws have recently infered that Imight have something to tell them. DS2 is tnearly two, I'm less than amused

MaryPoppinsBag · 05/09/2012 16:49

I was asked once, I was on children's ward, after DS2 (5 days old) was admitted due to losing weight after failing to establish BF. the Student Doctor asked when I was due!Confused
I was a little bit worried for her future career in Medicine. Grin

slowestwildebeast · 05/09/2012 16:51

I've been asked and I'm a size 8 skinny as hell, I had been drinking beer that day. Some girl in a bar asked my boyfriend at the time if I should be drinking while pregnant to which he told her that I wasn't and apparently she was very apologetic.

He was ruder, he just told me "it's because you stand stupidly with your belly out!" Cheers!

WheelieBinRebel · 05/09/2012 17:21

Worra Yes I've done the grandparent one. Mortifying, the poor man looked like he was going to cry!

Redwhine · 05/09/2012 17:37

I never ask anyone if they are pregnant, even if they're 8 months gone and massaging their stomachs whilst discussing birth plans! I wait to be told!

I got asked about when new baby was due by a random old lady in a lift. DS was 6 weeks old and asleep in the pram beside me.

I gave her the stink eye and flounced off quite a lot.

I did have a big post baby tummy but FFS.

WillNeverGetALicence · 05/09/2012 18:46

slowest I think that girl in the bar was rude on two counts.

One by referring to you as pregnant when she didn't know you or your situation and could have [and did] get it wrong.

But second to be giving you a lecture [via your boyfriend] on drinking while pregnant, also when she doesn't know you and is not a friend! Even a friend would be on shaky ground there tbh Hmm

She is a right nosy bossy cow isn't she!

But yes OP I hear you and feel your pain!

I have an 18 mth old and am often asked whether I am pregnant.

I do still have a bit of a pot belly [cheers DS2] and wear empire line tops to hide it. So I can see why people might wonder..

But still think it's very crass to comment if you are not sure!!!

TheCraicDealer · 05/09/2012 19:01

I don't ask unless it's blatantly obvious to prevent potential offence and embarrassment. I eventually gave in the other week and asked my dentist when she was due, then told her I hadn't wanted to say on my previous visit in case she'd just had a really lunch.

sleepingbunnies · 06/09/2012 01:20

Last week on a girly night out when the barman had already served me 4 double vodkas he then asked me when I was due!!

I told him I'd had the baby 10 months ago... Iv never seen someone look so embarrassed! I was mortified :-(

abcde1 · 06/09/2012 01:28

I was asked by a trainer in the gym. I said no. She looked awkward and muttered something incomprehensible about me having odd posture. After 20 years of ballet training I doubt this.

Six months later the same trainer again asked me when I was due. Again, I said I wasn't pregnant. I then complained to the manager :)

Considering I was a size 8 on both occasions I saw her remarks as offensive and unnecessary....

Was quite amusing going back in the next year when I was pregnant though with a 6m pregnant belly: don't think she dared asked me!!

Darkesteyeswithflecksofgold · 06/09/2012 02:00

The fact that a lot of the comments about pregnancy/weight came from women conveys two things to me.
A. That you dont have to be a man to be a mysogynist.
B. That a lot of them have obviously been reading too many celebrity magazines where theyve read that (insert celebrity mums name of choice here) has lost all her baby weight and toned up within a month after birth.

olympicsrock · 06/09/2012 05:27

Also have a 10 month DS and have lost a stone since having DS. I have been asked when baby is due as I do have a curved tummy stiLl (I always did have a rounded tum). It is upsetting. I have been out and bought myself some shapewear and it does help.

GlitterPinkRubberDucky · 06/09/2012 05:39

I had my dc 10 months ago, dropped a dress size am now a 12 and yesterday I was offered a seat on the tube. Cried all day and ate 3 chocolate bars (also have my periodwhich didn't help).
