Am I unreasonable to hate the words

Congealed

Treacherous (think that's the right spelling)! I know the meaning of this word isn't nice so can kind of see why I don't like it, but I cringe when I hear it!

Which words do you hate?

Almost everything that's been said.

I have a slightly different hatred: words that cloak things in more important language.

Like 'cohort' which is being used instead of 'other kids in my kid's year.

It seems to have taken over from 'exponential' which I don't understand except to know that it's almost always used wrongly. Same with decimate, epicentre and crescendo which I do understand and are also almost always used wrongly.

'School run' to describe what used to be known as 'taking the kids to school' is still with us.

Before anyone says, yes, I am getting back to Pedants' Corner now.

AlexReidsLonelyBraincell · 04/09/2012 17:16

Like playdate limited? :)

I detest the term, detest it.

limitedperiodonly · 04/09/2012 17:18

Oi, Mummy is okay from adults. I use it when referring to my mum in conversation with my sister and brother. To her face and other people she's Mum.

My brother doesn't say Mummy but that's because he's repressed Grin

Prince Charles unselfconsciously called the Queen 'Mummy' at the Jubilee. He doesn't do much to make me like him, but that touched me.

limitedperiodonly · 04/09/2012 17:18

Ooh! Forgot that one Alex

Megatron · 04/09/2012 17:25

Agree with a majority of the others, will also add:

icky
ick
Yuk - all of these are fine if said by a 3 year old but unacceptable from an adult.

Eeep!
Squat
Panties
Pantyhose
Excrement (it's jobby in my house thank you very much)

GoldenBabooshka · 04/09/2012 17:29

Porous.

notjustamummythankyou · 04/09/2012 17:43

Slacks. Awful word.

Also theatre when pronunced thee-etter, IKEA when pronounced ikk-aya and sauna when the first syllable rhymes with cow (this person may have close links with Sweden but it's no excuse. You're British, we pronounce it differently and you sound like a tit)

grimbletart · 04/09/2012 17:50

femininity

Such a wimpy word.

squoosh · 04/09/2012 17:52

Theatre pronounced Thee-etter is one of the worst things in the world.

I cringe for all you thee-etter lovers.

NellyJob · 04/09/2012 17:55

femininity
ooh I hate that word
I always imagine someone in a long flowery skirt wiping her fanny with a perfumed 'feminine wipe'
maybe I am just sick.

Creamtea1 · 04/09/2012 18:00

Also panties, panty liners, and work phrases such as 'on the same page', 'deep dive session', and 'briefing'
Agree school run is awful as is playdate

QOD · 04/09/2012 18:01

Fanjo

it makes me want to punch people in the cunt. :o

NellyJob · 04/09/2012 18:04

QOD Grin

Creamtea1 · 04/09/2012 18:15

Another ultimate hated phrase - 'you're looking well' AKA female bitchiness for 'you absolutely look fat/fatter'

AGoldenOrange · 04/09/2012 18:19

Yuck and ick if being said by anyone over the age of 10 years.

NellyJob · 04/09/2012 18:20

as above for 'tummy'

fookinell · 04/09/2012 18:20

squee
eeeewwww.............aaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhhh

AlexReidsLonelyBraincell · 04/09/2012 19:51

Yummy, scrummy, horrid... used by any person over the age of 9.

A MN favourite here, Sainsbo's, Sainsbugs.
I mean how much harder is it to type Sainsbury's? I always feel people who use it are not-so stealthily broadcasting that they shop there as though it is something amazing (it's hardly Fortnum and Mason) and they also think abbreviating it makes them sound 'down wit da kidz'.

AlexReidsLonelyBraincell · 04/09/2012 19:53

Nellyjob that is so funny. I like how your mind works. Grin

Rugger - as in rugby. It could just be this particular person who says it a lot.

Gimp.

Lush - as in 'that's lush, innit'

Oh, and 'innit'.....

AlexReidsLonelyBraincell · 04/09/2012 20:02

Pump - as in fart. It sounds so, weedy.

Melindaaa · 04/09/2012 20:06

Gobble. I've seen it a few times on MN in the last week and I hate it.

Also supper. Hate that word.
