Dh has the hump. Today the gas fire got condemned. He is humping as it passed last year and it is unfixable.

So far, so reasonable.

It's 35 years old, it's G-Plan, in the 16 years of living in the house it has never needed any money spending on it what so ever, has never broken down and has always been surprisingly efficient to run.

He's sulking. Because it is not longer fit for use. Grin

I think this is the first thread EVER, where British Gas come out being reasonable.

Actually, I remember watching Watchdog where they complained about British Gas as they were condemning and replacing boilers which were working or needed a very cheap part at a cost of £££. I'd get a second opinion.

cozietoesie · 03/09/2012 18:01

Ah but it's his fire. It's like a car failing its MOT or something. Direct attack on his manhood !

Grin
TheGoldenKnid · 03/09/2012 18:02

Oh I don't know ... Don't you think he might be able to fix it with a bit of duct tape (duck tape?) and WD40? Wink

Lueji · 03/09/2012 18:03

I agree with Lady. Have it checked by an independent gas engineer.

Unless you don't want it to work...

FannyFifer · 03/09/2012 18:04

You will pay well over the odds if British gas replace it.
Get a few quotes and even a second opinion on it being condemned.

honeydragon · 03/09/2012 18:04

Don't need one, thankfully, it's only just scraped the last few checks. Plus I know the chap and he called another guy out for a second opinion Smile

Yes if it was the boiler, I'd've been more questioning, I've read the same about BG.

But yes, dh is already investing himself in the conspiracy theory.

We knew once the fire went it went, can't get the parts now.

its duct tape or wd40 ssee

LadySybildeChocolate · 03/09/2012 18:06

I have a woodburner in the living room, it's soooo much better then a gas fire. Grin

honeydragon · 03/09/2012 18:08

Not getting it replaced. We had an independent come out last winter who would've charged us £50 to seal it off, as we were worried about it starting to smoke.

So on the plus side, we've saved ourselves £50.00.

We've been saying for years we ought to just seal it off and stick in an electric one - which makes dh's hump more amusing.

OP posts:
LadySybildeChocolate · 03/09/2012 18:09

Electric ones are not cheap to run.

honeydragon · 03/09/2012 18:14

I know but the house is so so warm that we rarely rarely need to utilise the fire. I think last winter it went on all of 5 times and it takes around 15 minutes to heat the whole house for the rest of the evening if it's switched on.

We're very lucky.

I am such a horrible person, but he keeps glaring at the fireplace as if it is a sentient being. I have to hide in the kitchen to snigger.

I'm jealous LadyS woodburner how cool ! Well how warm and cozy

honeydragon · 03/09/2012 18:15

Although the G-Plan saw us stocically through Winter 2004 when the heating packed up Smile

Man + Fire = Providing Spitroast Buffalo For Family

Honey - he's just answering the call of the caveman inside.

British Gas Man is chieftan from neighbouring tribe; he has just sauntered into DH's territory and pissed on his campfire. Of course he's unhappy.

LadySybildeChocolate · 03/09/2012 18:18

Some gas fires are really fugly, honey.

The burner is great, it can get far too warm in here though. There's an open fire in the dining room also. Grin

honeydragon · 03/09/2012 18:49

I am not paying a fortune for a gas fire, the ones that look vaguely ok are stoopid money that we don't have.

Talc I think you've got it! Poor dh has had his manliness compromised by some young squit in blue trousers Sad

LadySybildeChocolate · 03/09/2012 18:54

Can you get rid of it, plaster the inside of the fireplace and put some candles inside? It will look lovely.

honeydragon · 03/09/2012 19:01

No Fireplace hole as its GPlan. Just need to plaster the hole up and then I can put furniture where I like! Yaaay!

Fireplace is still on wall at the moment, with a jaunty little sign on it declaring Death BY Gas Fire

LadySybildeChocolate · 03/09/2012 19:02

{off to google}

It's going to look great. RIP fire!

honeydragon · 03/09/2012 19:02

Ooooh could cap it and plaster the little hole and put a teeny tiny door on and hide little mices in it wearing hats!
