flippineckythump · 02/09/2012 23:02

it so reminds me of my childhood, and the people who were around me when I was growing up

I feel proper sick in the pit of my stomach

Matesnotdates · 02/09/2012 23:05

I know. Me too. low self esteem all round, bullying of anyone who is a bit different.

flippineckythump · 02/09/2012 23:11

so so so so so so so pleased I left those people behind....

have been to a few reunions over the last couple of years, and they are still the same angry frustrated nasty people they were back then-lashing out and blaming everyone but themselves for the badness in their lives

flipping excellent writing/ directing/acting (?dunno-bit film illiterate!) to capture it so sickeningly well...

YADDNBU

Shane Meadows films will tend to do that to you.

I adore his films, but they are a suckerpunch in the gut, and not to be watched alone, during pregnancy, in the postnatal period, with a hangover or if you have PMT.

If you need an antedote, there are loads of episodes of Babar available on catch up for free if you have a Virgin box, or on YouTube.

Babar is my "go to" for grim-film-induced PTSD Grin

Matesnotdates · 03/09/2012 01:12

flippin was wondering if we came from the same Northern town, so apt is your description of my former schoolfriends!

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 03/09/2012 02:24

This is not unreasonable at all, I also felt sick after watching it. I say 'watching' but I was quite preoccupied with eating three tubs of ice cream, a bar of chocolate and drinking a bottle of wine.

Still feel pretty bad to be honest.

citylovernow · 03/09/2012 02:28

I thought it was a wonderful film. Really, the best I've seen in a long time. So clever.

TaintedLove · 03/09/2012 02:51

YANBU, it isn't pleasant watching. I don't think it is intended to be. It is fairly accurate representation of particular areas of the UK and I can certainly say it is very representative of where I live (sadly). I still think it is a fantastic film and the subsequent channel 4 series, this is england '86, was also fantastic.

TaintedLove · 03/09/2012 02:52

Could I have said representative or fantastic anymore times?

Devianta · 03/09/2012 03:28

I absolutely loved the film and subsequent series. I cant wait for the next one. But yes, it makes uncomfortable viewing at times. My husband IS 'milky'..Seriously. He was a Jamaican boy growing up in a white area with skinhead mates and he tells chilling stories about the whole time. He loves the film and series, too, though. Lol is a terrific character, I think..

GreenD · 03/09/2012 04:21

I thought Dean Man's Shoes was better. Still a good film though.

NCForNow · 03/09/2012 04:26

My DH can't watch it either...he wasn't even BORN here...he grew up in Oz but it reminds him of the era. I LOvE it though and I grew up in a small, working class community that was devastated by the steel closures...so really, if anyone has a right it's me not him!

YANBU....it's tough.

Hyperballad · 03/09/2012 04:37

YANBU

Stunning film, makes me feel ill that that kind of shit still goes on.

All the more poiniant for me when my 8wk old mixed race DS is asleep on my chest throughout. I had a little cry during the credits!

flippineckythump · 03/09/2012 07:43

there's a series?!?!? Cant be watching that!

Will look up Babar on Netflix tonight, cheers badgerina

Grin taintedlove I dont think you could!

devianta I also really liked Lol....urgh....and the conversation she has with Combo about the drunken sex they had had, when he thought it was beautiful and was in love with her...yeuck....a scene that was played over and over, amongst us...EVERYTHING about the film is spot on. Can identify every single character amongst my 'friends'. The actors are mostly too young to have experienced it themselves huh? Well done to them

hyperballad yeah, my dcs are MR; I would NEVER consider raising them where I grew up...Boo! to small towns ...we are safely ensconced in our happy-ghetto Grin

YANBU. It was like turning back a clock for me, and not in a good way.

On the positive side, it makes me so glad that I escaped from the shit hole town that I grew up in, and have done something with my life.

Very good film though, and very accurate.

WhyTheBigPaws · 03/09/2012 08:20

I found it really disturbing but gripping and spookily accurate - very, very similar to a group of people I knew growing up. The series are amazing, some of the best TV that's been made in years. I find some of it uncomfortable viewing (anyone who's seen them will know which scenes in particular) but still don't think I've watched much that is better written or acted. Like you I think Lol is a brilliant character, I believe Vicky McClure won a Bafta for her part which was well-deserved, she is a fantastic actress.

Badgerina · 03/09/2012 10:58

I can't imagine what it would be like to watch the film having grown up then, and there Sad

GreenD Dead Man's Shoes is harrowing. Just so grim (incredible film though).

Mrsjay · 03/09/2012 11:02

It is really hard hitting isn't it this is england 86 was worse but excellent tv when LOL is raped by her father really stuck with me for ages the image is very powerful, they are making a this is england 90 not sure when it is though

Mrsjay · 03/09/2012 11:03

Just saw the bit where they are attacking/abusing the shopkeeper

Oh that is where I turned it I was sort of flicking the tv last night but I wasn't really in the mood to watch it till the end I have seen it a few times though , the actor who plays gumbo is an amazing actor, even if he makes your skin crawl and your insides twist.

Mrsjay · 03/09/2012 11:13

I went to school with boys like them who used to hang about with older skinhead gangs its really depressing when I think about it Sad

I hung out with a boy who had a mohican; he had NF tattooed on both sides of his head Hmm I was too naive at the time, to understand the significance....he is dead now

The scene when combo is giving the talk about immigrants and woody et al are uncomfortable and leave, invokes feelings I had alot in my youth...I think I didnt understand alot of it but was savvy enough to know it was all wrong. I was petrified alot of the time Smile

And teh scene before that when Combo is telling the tail of when he was in prison 'the big black sweaty hand..' and no-one sticks up for Whitey....can so relate to taht feeling of everyone being to scared to speak out...

Mrsjay · 03/09/2012 11:26

I bet he's lovely in RL

he will be
