What do you think about saying 'sugar' instead of swearing?

I know it sounds crazy, but I get annoyed when people say 'sugar'. It's fine if they don't want to swear or say damn or whatever, but why sugar? It doesn't fit with being angry about something. Why not bicarbonate of soda, lemons, salt or coffee bean? 'Coffee bean' sounds better to shout then sugar. Saying 'sugar' should be for something you like. AIBU about this and just plain mad or does anyone agree?

Plain mad.

OhBuggerandArse · 26/08/2012 23:12

It's just naff. No need to go any further into it than that.

TrinityRhino · 26/08/2012 23:13

Isn't it just about the fact it has the same sh noise as shit. Nothjng to do with the actual word.

WorraLiberty · 26/08/2012 23:14

It's marginally better than saying "Oh Artificial Sweetner" though....

ForkInTheForeheid · 26/08/2012 23:14

The only time I say "sugar" is when I've already started to say "shit" and it saves me from accidentally swearing in front of someone (usually DS) that I don't want to.
Personally my non-swear swear word of choice is bumcakes (as a sort-of 4yo friendly version of bollocks :D )

TrinityRhino · 26/08/2012 23:14

Lol worra

AgentZigzag · 26/08/2012 23:15

It is a bit over polite for a swear isn't it?

If you don't want to swear, either because you don't like it or there are children with big ears nearby, then don't swear.

No point if it's not got the emotional punch people feel better for having when they use proper swears.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 26/08/2012 23:16

Our French teacher at school told us that the French say Mercredi instead of merde in the same way we say sugar instead of shit. It still amuses me to this day Grin
I don't mind what people say tbh, the mangling of grammar and things like "irregardless" irk me MUCH more than sugar or shit.

RevoltingChildren · 26/08/2012 23:16

I say sugar or shoot. Dh days shine a light

I got it from a teacher at school

BertieBotts · 26/08/2012 23:17

It's because you can go "Oh sh...............ugar!" because your brain automatically says shit and then you can correct yourself immediately.

"Shoot" would work just as well but sounds american.

"Fudge" is along the same lines though Grin

lljkk · 26/08/2012 23:18

I say Sugar a leetle bit, I think it's all right if only occasional. I find swearwords very jarring & DC respect that, thankfully.

PavlovtheCat · 26/08/2012 23:18

Mad

CoolaSchmoola · 26/08/2012 23:20

Mad.

WorraLiberty · 26/08/2012 23:21

I've just had a flashback to when I was about 12yrs old Grin

My parents never swore in front of us but my mate's Mum used to say, "Oh shit, sugar and shame" whenever anything annoyed her.

I was so shocked it was hilarious!

valiumredhead · 26/08/2012 23:24

If you asked my late Great Aunt what was for tea, she replied ' Shit with sugar on it!' I do mis her Sad

WorraLiberty · 26/08/2012 23:26

valium!! My Aunt used to say the same thing! Grin

Of if you were bored and said, "What can I do?"

She'd reply with, "Take off your sock and shit in your shoe" Grin

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 26/08/2012 23:27

Irritating and twee. Just say shit. It won't hurt you.

valiumredhead · 26/08/2012 23:27

WorraLiberty · 26/08/2012 23:28

FrankWippery · 26/08/2012 23:29

Bollocks or fuck work better for me I find.

valiumredhead · 26/08/2012 23:30

Was your Aunt from the West Country?

My hair isn't really red - another Mumsnetter named me Grin

DappyHays · 26/08/2012 23:30

we say "shazbat" in our house in place of proper swearies, when the ankle-biters are around.

valiumredhead · 26/08/2012 23:32

I sat 'shit' and ds says "MUM!!!!!!!!!!!!" Shock and does the male equivalent of hoiking his bosom!

WorraLiberty · 26/08/2012 23:34

valiumredhead · 26/08/2012 23:35
