to think games have 18 certs for a reason?

Can someone please explain why a video game has an 18 cert? We're not a gaming household (our DC's are only tiny) so I have no experience. Earlier BIL came over with DN who's 10, and he'd just bought him COD which I saw was an 18.

I pointed at the cert and said "that's there for a reason, you know", and BIL just said "ooooh!" to which I just shrugged.

Like I said, I know nothing about games, but I do know that there's usually quite a big jump between a 15 and an 18 film, and I assume it's the level of violence in a game that gives it an 18 certificate?

So, AIBU to think that a 10yo shouldn't be bought an 18 cert game?

Why should the adult gamers be responsible for protecting other people's children? The first line of protection should be provided by the parents, surely?

StuntGirl · 28/08/2012 23:16

How odd to assume players on adult rated games should set up their own servers to avoid children. When I play online I just join whatever game it throws at me, you don't always get a choice. I'm sure I probably have unwittingly played matches with underage people before, doesn't make me a paedo!

AgentZigzag · 28/08/2012 23:17

Children could be encountered anywhere on the internet, I'm sure there are under 18s on here judging by some of the outlandish threads and spelling/grammar and text speak

All you can do is report them if they're where they shouldn't be, which MrsPs DH did.

He's not responsible for other peoples parenting, if anything it's the games host who should be policing it.

StuntGirl · 28/08/2012 23:18

noble On xbox live it just assumes you're over 18, unless there is a parental lock on the profile in which case it wouldn't even play the game.

TheBigJessie · 28/08/2012 23:38

I remember playing Left 4 Dead once on a public server. At the end of the scenario, one of my teammates asked the rest of us how to "turn the blood off" because his mother had come in and complained about it. It transpired he was not 18!

So I've definitely played with underage players. Am not a peadophile though!

TheBigJessie · 28/08/2012 23:39

*Paedophile.

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/08/2012 23:44

Dammit, if you can't spell it. Irony!

AgentZigzag · 28/08/2012 23:49

I was wondering how I'd missed coming across a category of people who were attracted to vegetables BJ Grin

Surely one to remember.

"Making up a private server where you are in charge is a matter of 1 or 2 clicks."

Why the hell should you when the game is for adults

noblegiraffe · 29/08/2012 00:00

8 year olds should be allowed to roam freely across the Internet while adults huddle in small enclaves only talking to their friends, too scared to venture outside in case they get accused of paedophilia.

Clearly.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/08/2012 00:02

I think you mean... 8 year olds should be allowed to roam freely across the world while adults huddle in small enclaves only talking to their friends, too scared to venture outside in case they get accused of paedophilia. Pubs, strip clubs and sex shops should all be allowed. Otherwise we might have to PARENT

tittytittyhanghang · 29/08/2012 18:53

But there's no law saying that children can't play these games. Only that they are not allowed to buy them. If an parent/adult buys the game, then its up to their discretion whether they think that their child should play them. Am also very cynical about these games being aimed solely at adults.

bunnywhack · 29/08/2012 20:15

IME the parents that buy these for their dc's don't play themselves whereas you very rarely find a gamer that would. I honestly think that most of the parents have, other then a few glimpses of the screen the back of the box and maybe an online review or two no idea of what these games portray and wouldn't allow them if they did.
With online gaming most of the homophobic, misogynistic arsehattery is from the underage users, barrens chat anyone? So if your child is online chances are they aren't just exposed to it they are an active part and you just don't know about it.
Age ratings are there for a reason. It makes me laugh when people use the film/game divider they are rated on the same thing why would graphic violence and bad language be acceptable in one format but not another.

StuntGirl · 29/08/2012 20:21

You're quite right titty. Same as underage people not being allowed in cinemas or to buy the film in the shop, but they can watch it at home.

The fact remains these games are not suitable for underage people. Most people won't care and will play with those individuals anyway (or likely won't even know) but it won't stop me kicking underage children out of my party. Aside from anything else I have no interest in playing with children!
