People who don't vaccinate their bloody children?
My child has Measles.
He is fully up to date with all his vaccinations. How is this bloody fair? It was virtually unheard of until this business a few years ago when everyone suddenly decided not to vaccinate.
Well thanks a lot!!!! AND NOW LOOK!!!! I'M ABUSING EXCLAMATION MARKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not happy.

I hear ya and Im pretty sure I'd feel the same in your position. A disease which was all but eradicated in this country is spreading again in a way which could so easily hav been prevented.
I hope your wee one has a full and fast recovery x

Nabootique · 24/08/2012 14:42

I had my DD vaccinated because I was vaccinated, and so was DH. No harm came to us as a result and we didn't catch any of the things we were vaccinated against. Could be coincidence, I suppose. I confess I haven't really looked into all the anti-vaccine information though, and it's a choice thing at the end of the day. How come your DC caught measles if vaccinated though? I guess it doesn't always work. I think I would feel the same (rightly or wrongly) if my DD caught something that maybe could have been prevented.

PureMorning · 24/08/2012 14:43

yanbu
Hope you dc feels better soon

KenLeeeeeee · 24/08/2012 14:47

YANBU. It's one of my pet peeves although I have to be diplomatic about saying so because lots of the dippy hippy lentil weaving pages I like on Facebook include evangelical non-vaccinators. Hmm

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 24/08/2012 14:48

Naboo - No idea, I didnt think it could be measles at first cause he's vaccinated.

He's not too bad at the moment. He's had calpol and is laid across my lap while i rub sudocrem into his back where its worst, he seems to be enjoying it as he's not crying.

He's off food though so must have a sore throat, he's had some real cold yoghurt but that's all.

There were 27 cases in my area last month!

I wonder if this will go the same way as the other 756320274 vaccination threads...

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 24/08/2012 14:51

Sorry that last bits wrong (Mum must have got it mixed up as i've just googled to check) www.sthelensstar.co.uk/news/9871938.Measles_outbreak_now_hits_the_20_mark_in_St_Helens/

Note to self; Double check second hand info before posting.

27 cases! Wowza thats loads.

YANBU. I know some children cant be vaccinated for various health reasons but for people that just opt out........its frustrating to say the least.

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 24/08/2012 14:52

Jareth - I'm not debating it tbh. I just want to throw rotten fish at them. There's no debate to be had. Just lots and lots of rotten fish throwing.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 24/08/2012 14:53

it is weird that you've had such a cluster of it.

missymoomoomee · 24/08/2012 14:53

I was having this discussion last week with a mother who refused to vaccinate her children on the grounds that there is a high risk of ME or autism. She told me that cases were on the rise after they started vaccinating all children. I had to physically show her (thank you google) that both conditions became more widely accepted and screened within a few years of the vaccinations started so it wasn't that there were more cases just more children getting the proper diagnoses. Its a very worrying situation where people look at the horror stories and don't see beyond that. (she is still refusing to get them vaccinated btw)

Hope your poor dc feels better soon, I would be fuming if I were you too.

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 24/08/2012 14:54

Rilson - I understand that, It's those i'm more angry for than myself as children who haven't been vaccinated for good reason are more at risk now, and will suffer it worse than a vaccinated child who catches it.

OP posts:
TheQueenOfDiamonds · 24/08/2012 14:55

Jareth - It's not really weird. The people who live in the area are generally (Not all) thick as pig shit.

SecretNutellaMedallist · 24/08/2012 14:55

Many people opt out for various reasons, please don't consider they have "just opted out" Most of those who do opt out will have put a lot of thought into it.

However, in this particular case it looks like vaccination has not worked for your son Queen of Diamonds.

How old is he?

griphook · 24/08/2012 14:56

No nbu, what area are you in.

How old is your dc

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 24/08/2012 14:58

I don't even know where he' got it from tbh though, We went to my neighbours party the other wek but the children who came all live on the street and none of them have had it AFAIK.

I haven't really been out either as i've not been well.

I'm a bit fooked for horse care though - One of the women on the yard is pregnant so i can't take him there. I hope to god the weather holds out so he can stay out.

OP posts:
SecretNutellaMedallist · 24/08/2012 14:59

has he been to soft play recently?

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 24/08/2012 15:00

Secret - If they've got a valid medical reason then i agree with you. If they're googling random shit then no they don't have a valid reason, haven't put thought into it, they've just read some shit on the internet and jumped on a bandwagon/

He is 10 months

Griphook - I'm in merseyside, newton-le-willows specifically.

OP posts:
TheQueenOfDiamonds · 24/08/2012 15:00

Secret - No i dont really go unless DD asks, and she hasn't for months. I avoid the place at all costs!

OP posts:
TheQueenOfDiamonds · 24/08/2012 15:01

The only thing i can think is if DD has picked it up as a carrier and passed it to him, as she's in nursery and goes to various places with her Dad that i don't know details of.

OP posts:
TheQueenOfDiamonds · 24/08/2012 15:03

If thats even possible, i know some illness' can work like that.

OP posts:
saladfingers · 24/08/2012 15:04

Your child has had the MMR but has still caught measles? Is this possible? Then why vaccinated in the the first place?
How do you know they haven't caught it from someone who has also been vaccinated?

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 24/08/2012 15:07

Saladfingers - Well it must be because he has it! And he was definitely vaccinated! I would have got OH to stay home if i'd known, i told him to go ahead as i didn't think it could be measles as my mum was suggesting because i had him vaccinated.

I don't know who he's caught it off personally. But the reason there are large outbreaks are because of more people not vaccinating.

OP posts:
Tamisara · 24/08/2012 15:07

saladfingers Yes, your child can still get measles, even if they have been vaccinated, especially if they've only had the first one. The immunity rate after the first MMR is 90%, which means that 1 in 10 children are not immune after the first dose.

wolvesdidit · 24/08/2012 15:08

Measles can be a nasty disease. Hope he gets better soon. I didn't know you could catch measles if you'd been vaccinated. DS2 is due his second MMR soon, I'll make sure he gets it.

I know that the second MMR is to cover the 10% it didn't work on first time round. I am guessing your DS is one of those kids. Make sure he gets the top up when he's 3.
