Would IBU to ask my inlaws to buy their own stairgates/cheap carseat for DS?

Genuine question - want to canvass opinions.

As the title says really - would it be reasonable of me to ask inlaws to buy their own stairgates and carseat for DS so that we don't have to unscrew our stairgates and swap out the carseat every time they have him or we go visit?

It's not a huge deal, it's just a tadge irritating!

Yes.

If you want them to have them you should buy them.

threesocksmorgan · 23/08/2012 16:40

i think it would be a bit cheeky tbh

PotteringAlong · 23/08/2012 16:40

Sorry; yes makes no sense!

YABU

FuckityFuckFuck · 23/08/2012 16:41

I would ask them to buy a stairgate but nothing else. Swapping a car seat really isn't much of a job but stairgates are a pita

KD0706 · 23/08/2012 16:41

Can you not buy them yourself? I think it's unreasonable to expect grandparents to spend the money

atacareercrossroads · 23/08/2012 16:41

Yes Yabu, buy some yourself!

hermionestranger · 23/08/2012 16:41

Yes you would. Try free cycle for stairgates.

What age carseat do you need? If its an infant carrier I have one here you can have. I'm in manchester area.

WithACherryOnTop · 23/08/2012 16:42

YABU.

LadyFlumpalot · 23/08/2012 16:43

Thanks for the opinions, will stock up on stairgates the next time Lidl has them in then! Can't afford to go buying another two from Mothercare at nearly £40 each!

Can anyone reccommend a good, but cheap carseat?

ywbu we don't drive but when gp's had kids for a week we bought boosters for them to use in the car you should buy them yourself

boatclub · 23/08/2012 16:43

Yes I think it's a bit cheeky but where do you/they live? I've got 4 stairgates that I'm looking to sell? Smile

PotteringAlong · 23/08/2012 16:44

Stairgates are £18 in asda

LadyFlumpalot · 23/08/2012 16:44

Thats very kind of you Hermione but I would need a toddler one, DS is 20 months. Thank you for the offer though!

stairgate no they are really cheap, but not the car seat unless they have looking after him all the time,

Hopeforever · 23/08/2012 16:46

None of kids Granparents had a stair gate or child seat at their house for our visits. I would not have expected them to make holes in their walls to fit them.

I am assuming they have the space to store them?

LadyFlumpalot · 23/08/2012 16:47

Ooh Boatclub I'm in Dorset.

See, my mum and stepdad just went out when I was pregnant and bought it all themselves - so it didn't occur to me that it might be cheeky, as I didn't ask my mum - if that makes sense?

I have given them a pushchair to use when we go down so we don't have to lug our huge monstrosity too, and have left a spare highchair -I'm not a completely cheeky mare.

Hi Flumpalot, I bought all my stairgates on Ebay at no more than a tenner each so you could also try that. Do GPs really need stairgates though (just asking)? I have given mine - nappies, wipes etc, beakers, potties, carseat, but not stairgates.

LadyFlumpalot · 23/08/2012 16:48

PLEASE NOTE I have not mentioned this to them in the slightest, was canvassing opinions as I was thinking about asking - clearly as the majority think it would be cheeky, I won't.

I would buy them and take them with me, although knowing our parents we will be told off for such silly behavior and something else bought for the GC (that they will not doubt not play with)

LadyFlumpalot · 23/08/2012 16:51

Stairgatetoheaven (appropriate!)

DS has developed a fixation with trying to climb the stairs by himself, and my inlaws have a very steep staircase, one of those that is kind of in it's own corridor inbetween kitchen and livingroom. It cannot be seen from either downstairs room so he could easily get halfway up before anyone knew.

And thank you to Potteringalong and stairgate for pointing me in the direction of cheap ones!

Justme23 · 23/08/2012 16:56

No!

My PILs and my own parents supplied their own.

I think it would be ridiculous for grandparents to expect you to pay out £200 on quid on extra car seats

BellaOfTheBalls · 23/08/2012 16:57

Think YAB a bit U.

Both sets of grandparents bought stair gates when my DS1 was small but that was cause PIL looked after him 3 days a week while I worked and although we only visited my DM occasionally due to living so far away she bought a set because the stairs in her house were rather dangerous. She got some great ones off eBay that are screw fitting but you can remove them completely and only insert the gate into the fitting when you need it. Think they were M&P's.

Krumbum · 23/08/2012 16:57

Yabu. You don't need to take a stairgate to go to their house, use doors. And car seats are very portable.

PetWoman · 23/08/2012 17:05

What about saying to ILs "it's a bit of a faff bringing our stairgate and car seat here every time - do you mind if we buy a spare set for you to use?" Then they might offer to pay for them - bonus! If not, you'll have your answer (and will have to shell out).
