To disagree with special lanes in london for the para olympics

ReallyTired · 22/08/2012 18:21

There are special lanes designed for the para olympic athletes which are currently active, inspite of the fact the para olympics are week away. Having designated lanes during the olympics was a massive inconvience for people getting to work.

www.tfl.gov.uk/gettingaround/london2012/24565.aspx

I am being unreasonable thinking that its over the top keeping the lane restrictions for the para olympics.

a) the para olympics don't start for a week.
b) the para olympics is not a comparible sporting even to the olympics.
c) Very few people will actually use the lanes compared with the olympics. Sad to say, but the level of media interest in the para olympics is less than the actual olympics. Also there are far fewer competitors who might use the lanes.

The lane restrictions were just about barable for the olympics because they were during the summer holidays. Its going to be hellish when the school term starts and people are back to work.

I feel a compromise would be to allow para olympic spectators to use the lanes rather than having lanes standing empty.

the reason why fewer nations take part is because more nations still don't have equal disability rights. But let's dress that up as that fewer take part because it's not comparrible shall we? Hmm

And if you're going to bitch about something at least learn to spell it.

MrMiyagi · 22/08/2012 18:55

If you were asking about having the lines for either games, I agree 100%.

Asking only about the paralympics however, Biscuit

MrMiyagi · 22/08/2012 18:56

*lanes

NovackNGood · 22/08/2012 18:57

Yes wannaBE do learn to spell... " because it's not comparrible shall we?"

It's comparable.

I am getting increasingly fed up.
That is it really.

TheDoctrineOfEnnis · 22/08/2012 19:02

Applauds issy.

Passes gin to MrsDV.

TheDoctrineOfEnnis · 22/08/2012 19:04

Manic there are opening and closing ceremonies. Sold out means the same number of people whatever they have paid for their tickets.

YouBrokeMySmoulder · 22/08/2012 19:08

Bloody hell are we going to have to put up with people being really offensive for the whole time of the paralympics. Something inspiring, uplifting and exciting? I despair sometimes, I really do.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 22/08/2012 19:09

Ta very much

AND op. I live in an Olympic borough and ,uch to. Y surprised experienced no disruption what so ever let alone any massive inconvenience.

But yes, you are right, why the hell should the paralympians get the same treatment as other athletes? It's not as if they have spent years training and given their loves over to their sport or anything Hmm

TheDoctrineOfEnnis · 22/08/2012 19:10

Re the general London traffic point - having the lanes is a necessary part of every bid. During the Olympics, the electronic signs kept the lanes open as much as possible and loads of the lane fines have been waived.

The conclusion could be drawn that for once Britain was paying lip service to the silly rules (remembers green grocers being fined for using lb and oz). Maybe not, but maybe.

But as for a different rule completely for the Paralympics - pshaw.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 22/08/2012 19:10

Soz for manky typing.
Stupid touch screen keyboard

D0oinMeCleanin · 22/08/2012 19:11

I actually do not think they are comparable. Some of the paralympians have overcome a massive amount to be able to compete in these games. Far more than any Olympian.

The Paralympics is my eyes should be given far more time and celebration than the Olympics.

OP YABU and a bit of a twat.

Ilovesunflowers · 22/08/2012 19:12

This person is clearly looking to wind people up. I wouldn't bother biting folks. In a calm reply though I would just like to point out that the paralympics is sold out.

FasterHigherBeardierDaddyman · 22/08/2012 19:16

OP you make me sad.

I hope you watch the Paralympics and come back to make an apology after you've seen how fantastic it is and how packed the venues will be.

And next time you think about posting a thread like this make sure you read it out loud first so you can hear how stupid it sounds.

ShiftyFades · 22/08/2012 19:16

I can't believe I've even read this Confused
I tried to get tickets for Olympics and Paralympics and failed: sold out apart from the astronomically priced ones for a while and even they sold in the end

YANBU if you think they are not comparable.

The lanes are to ensure those athletes can get to their events on time (and officials). I believe this type of logistics had been a feature since Atlanta when some athletes missed their events due to traffic.

Here, have my first Biscuit

NarkedRaspberry · 22/08/2012 19:17

Seriously?

You've really not thought this through have you.

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 22/08/2012 19:19

Do you agree that the organisers made a pretty good fist of organising the Olympics ? I think they know who and when people need to use these lanes ...

kingbeat23 · 22/08/2012 19:20

I'm going to rise to the bait of this stupid thread, but like MrsDV, I live in an olympic borough, suffered no disrutption at all and am VERY excited to watch it all happen again.

I am more disappointed there are none of the big screens in the park like there were the last time as they were utterly brilliant and I had an amazing time at both park venues.

ihearsounds · 22/08/2012 19:20

Yabu. I am in London, doesn't bother me in the slightest that some roads, for some of the time will be closed. Big deal. I will simply do as the Olympics, and plan differently. Not the end of the world.

But the big difference with the paralympics, is that the 2.1 millions tickets have been sold to people. This is the first time ever the games have been sold out. Before the Olympics, they had flogged over a million tickets... Note, sold, not given to bigwigs with no intention of using them. Not bad for a games that noone is really interested in.

165 countries shall be represented. Not bad for something noone is really interested in. This is more that previous years, 15 countries are making a debut this year. An estimated 4,200 athletes are taking part.

Channel 4 will televise over 150 hours of the games, this is without other countries that will be televising the events.

FreudianSlipper · 22/08/2012 19:21

they?re not closed off yet around battersea and wandsworth

so another few weeks of inconvenience that most found to be far less worse than they expected but another 12 days of fantastic sport and the country coming together and admiring the talent and hard work of the athletes

and not comparable in what way? athletes are as well respected (not as well known but that will change) well the event is not as big but it seems many would disagree seeing as more tickets have been released just to go to the olympic park so you can experience the olympic experience and they have sold out well i could not get any

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 22/08/2012 19:22

kingbeat, Mrs DV - me too!!! (v excited)

NovackNGood · 22/08/2012 19:26

There were more than 3 times as many tickets sold for the Olympics at far higher prices so comparing tickets is rather silly.

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 22/08/2012 19:28

The Games lanes aren't for spectators. They will be needed, not as much because there are fewer venues outside the park being used, but they will be needed and it has been planned for.
