Watching silent witness, and the term frape has been used loads! I hate it!

Only if you complain about the scenes of ACTUAL rape in the programme.

missymoomoomee · 22/08/2012 11:15

I didn't watch it so I don't know what went on, but if you didn't like it you should have turned the programme off after the 1st use of the word. Whats the point in continuing to watch something you are taking offence to?

marge2 · 22/08/2012 11:16

what does it mean?

missymoomoomee · 22/08/2012 11:18

Marge its when someone hacks into your facebook page and writes things pretending to be you.

Wetthemogwai · 22/08/2012 11:18

Unless you have a good reason to be offended then Yabu. There's a difference between not liking a word and being offended

OhDearNigel · 22/08/2012 11:19

posting something on someone's facebook wall pretending to be them if you know their login

ash6605 · 22/08/2012 11:20

It's short for "Facebook raped" I'm not a fan of the term either Angry

Softlysoftly · 22/08/2012 11:21

YABU they were portraying teenagers use of it, like it of not (and I hate it) it is used in the way they were showing.

It actually highlighted that teenagers use it as such a throwaway term whilst actually being terrifyingly niave of rape itself. So so sad.

ExitPursuedByABear · 22/08/2012 11:21

Not sure why you would complain about a word used in a fictional programme? The word exists, people use it.

Bingdweller · 22/08/2012 11:22

Hideous term, YANBU.

yellowraincoat · 22/08/2012 11:23

I suppose it depends on context. It is an awful word and I always call people on using it.

Mrsjay · 22/08/2012 11:28

It is a a horrible word but obviously the programme is just tapping into the term to be current, what offends you about it ? I know with me its the lighthearted approach to rape. but It is a word ,

EarnestDullard · 22/08/2012 11:30

YANBU to hate the phrase, but YABabitU to be offended by fictional characters using it; a script calls for "realistic" behaviour and speech, and sadly the word is quite commonly used by younger (and possibly ignorant) people.

marge2 · 22/08/2012 11:32

oh - another reason to hate facebook then!

WerthersUnOriginal · 22/08/2012 11:35

It is a horrible word absolutely but I think the programme was only using it because it's widely used terminology to describe the use of someone's FB page.

I watched Silent Witness - what an awful story it was too Sad But then it usually is I guess.

puds11 · 22/08/2012 11:38

Good points. I think im just over sensitive to this term. I also hate facebook. I think im just being emotional.

horrible word, strongly dislike it, as i do all casual rape comparisons. but in a drama i imagine it wouldnt offend me as it would accurately portray many peoples attitudes.

WerthersUnOriginal · 22/08/2012 11:43

I dislike FB too. It so often seems to be the source of much unkindness I want to give it a massively wide berth. Unfortunately I have dc who are beginning to show an interest in it Sad

downbythewater · 22/08/2012 11:47

YANBU I watched it too and it made me wince- if it had been used by one of the teenage characters it would have at least been in character, but it was one of the detectives. Very insensitive especially as the girl in question had actually been raped and murdered. In fact it was a pretty disturbing episode all round.

thursday · 22/08/2012 11:52

there's nothing wrong with FB. there are some horrible people on there because they make up a percentage of the population but most people dont use it for being unkind. i very rarely see anything i dont like because i'm selective about who i associate with.

EarnestDullard · 22/08/2012 12:11

Agree with thursday. People being twats is not FB's fault.

OhDearNigel · 22/08/2012 12:28

why do people always blame the technology rather than the people ? There is nothing wrong with facebook, how can there be ? It's a computer programme.

Just because some people on fb are tossers doesn't mean all of facebook is wrong. I've never had any problems at all in 6 years.

hackmum · 22/08/2012 13:43

Exit: "Not sure why you would complain about a word used in a fictional programme? The word exists, people use it."

So if they used the word "nigger" or "paki" in a fictional programme, that would be OK, too? After all, the words exist, people use them.

Frontpaw · 22/08/2012 13:46

What a terrible term. I have never heard it before, and I assumed it meant actual rape by a 'friend'. I am so 20th century.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/08/2012 14:06

hackmum of course that would be ok! How else would you for example depict a fictional racist?
