My period is a couple a days late...don't think I am pregnant but I was just wondering if anyone else relies solely on this form of contraception, and how effective it's been over the years? It's never failed me yet...

My 12 year old DS is the result of 1 month using the withdrawal method.

ohhelpohnoitsa dunno. If there's potential for user-error, then it occurs. What people should do, is to consider whether they would use any particular method improperly. Will you take your pill on time? Will you keep risking it "just for tonight", while claiming to use the withdrawal method, or natural family planning? Will you check the condom first, and check for holes afterwards. Etc.

But lots of people don't, and end up having to buy a new cot mattress and a car seat, instead.

waterlego6064 · 21/08/2012 15:46

That makes sense SOH. Personally, although OH and I like to be able to 'conclude' in a variety of ways, I think I would feel there was something missing if we were never able to follow the foreplay-penetration-climax model unless TTC. (which would have been about 5 times in our 13 years together).

mrswishywashy1 · 21/08/2012 15:49

Only tried it once and it didnt work Sad

Pinkforever · 21/08/2012 15:50

Dh and I have been using the withdrawal method for 15 years with no problems. We did have an unplanned 3rd dc but that was only because we thought fuck it and dh didnt pull out one night!!

Now that we/dh has decided that we dont want more dcs I do find it a bit more worrying and tend to use it along with natural family planning methods. I would much prefer if dh got the snip but he is too much of a wimp....

forehead · 21/08/2012 16:07

DD1 and DD2 were 'conceived' using he withdrawal method....,.

mrsbugsywugsy · 21/08/2012 16:14

We used it for a few months after coming off the pill and before starting to ttc, but only because we didn't mind too much if it didn't work. Dp preferred it to using condoms.

I didn't get pregnant using it, then got pregnant straight away when we stopped.

Any news op?

Krumbum · 21/08/2012 16:19

It is not contraception. It is unprotected sex. Very unreliable. Get some condoms.

BartletForTeamGB · 21/08/2012 16:22

It is as reliable (or indeed, as unreliable) as condoms, krumbum. It is almost as good a contraception as just condoms.

Krumbum · 21/08/2012 16:26

Use condoms plus the withdrawl then. Double safe.
I think it's much easier to fuck up with withdrawl than it is condoms.

mummyonvalium · 21/08/2012 16:31

And studies will also show in the future it only works when the man is as committed to not having children as the woman.

Mrbojangles1 · 21/08/2012 16:35

My oh grandma is a irish catholic she used that method and went on to have 10 children

God the only people i thought still belived in this was 15 year old horny boys trying their luck and the pope Confused

Mrbojangles1 · 21/08/2012 16:41

And any way you look at it pulling out before you climax or half way trough the act is crap

And like others have said this realies on the man 100% not want children also their is the issue of pre come or pemature ejaculation many men suffer from this when they havent had sex for a whole or are drunk

Op get a coil fitted trust me they use the rythem method in many african counties we all know how that works out

mummyonvalium · 21/08/2012 16:43

I watched a documentary once where a man and women used it as a sole source and it did work. They had a chart of when she ovulated and her fertile period and then would only shag when she was not ovulating. They had not had an accident - that is why I say the man has to be as committed as the woman.

I used it effectively for 10 years with no scares. 6 weeks after stopping I was pregnant - so in my case, yes!
I think a lot of men people don't do it correctly though - hence the high number of people who get pregnant this way

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 21/08/2012 17:02

oh meant to say -ten years - same man

StaceeJaxx · 21/08/2012 17:03

Well the almost 6 year old currently sitting in front of the TV is the result of using the withdrawal method. Hope that helps.

McHappyPants2012 · 21/08/2012 17:13

it can work, but it means you need to track your monthy cycle and be very carefull around ovulation time

me personally i wouldn't trust it

NellyJob · 21/08/2012 17:17

blimey were you brought up in a convent?

Jodidi · 21/08/2012 17:19

My last pregnancy was a result of using the withdrawal method.

terrywoganstrousers · 21/08/2012 17:20

We have used it for 4 years with no mistakes- if your DP is disciplined enough I don't see why it's so risky!
I'm currently 21 weeks pg with number 2 but that was planned so I don't count it as a failure! And I fell the first month both times so it definitely wasn't a fertility issue.

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 21/08/2012 17:22

Well, most people on the Jeremy Kyle show seem to use it....and end up pregnant.
Usually not knowing whose baby it was Shock
