to think 'cute' baby competitions and child beauty pageants are vile and should be banned?

Isn't every baby and child beautiful? Children are individuals and not dolls to dress up for their parents ego trip. The worst is when young girls are dressed up in make-up etc, but I also find 'cute' baby competitions distasteful.

Aibu to want it all banned?

I agree, every year there is a cute baby comp in local paper, winner is always whoever has most family voting.

Mrsjay · 20/08/2012 09:17

They make me cringe they are not as popular here (yet) but I have seen 1 or 2 on tv and even though it is wrong the girls who won did not look like painted dolls which is something I suppose Hmm

Nanny0gg · 20/08/2012 09:17

YANBU

Mrsjay · 20/08/2012 09:18

and I cant stand the local paper baby comps either, yes the babies and toddlers are cute but..

LilyCocoplatt · 20/08/2012 09:18

The pageants are too extreme, I don't agree with young children wearing make up/fake tan etc.

I disagree about the bonny babies in the local paper though, I entered DD in this last year and probably will again this year, its just a bit of fun and I wasn't disappointed that she didn't win.

pumpkinsweetie · 20/08/2012 09:19

I don't like them personally, why put your own child on exibit?
Not only that, its normally the one with the most Fb votes that wins regardless of cuteness/no so cute- so it actually comes down to how many fb 'friends' you have

Debeez · 20/08/2012 09:19

Agreed, the child pageants are frightening from what I've seen. I admit I've not seen this whole toddlers and tiaras thing. Most of my knowledge comes from how it was in America in the 90's and from I understand it's worse now.

The bonny baby things in the paper are just money making to see how many of the child's family will ring in to vote.

I don't think YABU to want it banned but I suppose we cannot control how people choose to raise their children. And from what I've heard of the girl known as Honey Boo Boo her family life might be improved by what she does, the money might give them some more opportunities in life.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 20/08/2012 09:20

Pagents take it too far, but the local ones are harmless, I don't like it, the whole thing gives me the creeps, but I don't think it does any harm to anyone for a child's picture to be sent in an shown in a newspaper. I don't think they should be banned.

crackcrackcrak · 20/08/2012 09:20

Yanbu they are vile. I told everyone when dd was born that I would go mad if any entered her in baby of the year or similar. I will be the same with dd2.
I really do believe all babies are beautiful.

ScarletLadyOfTheNight01 · 20/08/2012 09:21

YANBU...not a fan at all. To see those (very) young girls paraded around in make-up, fake tan and jewellery...it just looks SO wrong to me. Children are beautiful as they are. I don't have a massive issue with cute baby competitions, but I wouldn't enter one myself.

PuppyMonkey · 20/08/2012 09:22

Local papers only do it to sell you the photo packages and also to sell more copies on the day the pix are printed.

pumpkinsweetie · 20/08/2012 09:22

Oh & beauty pagents are even worse and i believe they exploit children. The parents are attention hungry and trying to live their lifes through their kids.
Children are children, make-up should be for fun and fake tan & eyelashes should be kept for adults.

bruffin · 20/08/2012 09:23

The money spent on the paegents far outways any prize money.

Mrsjay · 20/08/2012 09:25

I know the adult well young adult pagents In america some of them give college scholarships as a prize so thats not a bad thing is it Confused

Mrsjay · 20/08/2012 09:27

The money spent on the paegents far outways any prize money.

they get gift certificates its all about the winning and trophies, I do watch toddlers and tiaras sometimes I know its wrong and I shouldn't Blush

LurkingAndLearningLovesCats · 20/08/2012 09:28

YADDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDNBU!!!

Those pageants make me sick and upset me so much. That 'Toddlers and Tiaras' show is basically kiddie porn. One girl (under five) dressed up as Julia Roberts in 'Pretty Woman.' :(

EnglishGirlApproximately · 20/08/2012 09:28

I really don't like the pageants, it goes beyond cute and pretty into sexy and adult which is dangerous territory.

There's been a cute baby competition in my local paper since I was a baby and I'm 38 - it seems to me to be fairly harmless. It's not something I would personally enter ds into but I don't think it's harmful. A lot of new parents want to show off their baby and it's a way of doing that. Obviously the winner is whoever has the most family / friends to vote so not exactly fair but I think most parents know that when they enter. I can't see how it's doing the baby any harm.

JumpingThroughMoreHoops · 20/08/2012 09:28

Have you ever seen the amount of spray tan and make up used for dancing competitions? And Gymnastics.

pumpkinsweetie · 20/08/2012 09:33

Yes Jumping, but they don't have tons of make-up on and adult clothing!
I think its awful the way they make these little girls up to look like mini-adults, quite disturbingAngry

LurkingAndLearningLovesCats · 20/08/2012 09:35

They're a paedophile's dream. Innocent yet provocative. :(

redexpat · 20/08/2012 09:56

But we wouldn't have Kirsten Chenoweth on our screens if it weren't for beauty pagents!

But yes, think they're awful generally.

bruffin · 20/08/2012 10:12

Kirsten Chenoweth didn't enter pageants until she was in her 20s, not a little girl.

Mrsjay · 20/08/2012 10:17

Kirsten Chenoweth didn't enter pageants until she was in her 20s, not a little girl.

Exactly at least a woman can chose to enter these things and they are slightly different from the kids ones.

britany spiers was a child pagent vetran as was Justin timberlake ,

Kladdkaka · 20/08/2012 10:31

YABU

While I agree with you about them not being very nice, others enjoy them and think differently. Wanting to ban stuff just because you don't like it is unreasonable.
