To be fed up of being called fat?

My mum used to be very slim but has thyroid problems and is very overweight (22-24) and feeling bad about it, I am a size 12 - 14.

I keep getting comments about

"Your going like me"
"You need to go to x to loose your weight"
"WE need to do something about this weight"
" We look like two [insert fat insult here]"
Other fat insults.

Its getting me down!

Everyone is missing the point, its irrelevent whether ops 12 is big or small. She said she is happy with her size and does not want to be insulted by her mother who is twice the size (defo not healthy!).

No-one should ridicule a persons size, especially when they are extra large themselves. I would tell the mum to be quiet and to sort out her own weight issues before insulting mine.

A size 12 is not fat

FutTheShuckUp · 19/08/2012 23:05

I'm sure you will be put on the 'delusional' bench with me here pumpkin

hmc · 19/08/2012 23:06

Well i am only 0.4 into the overweight category (normal being bmi up to 24.9 and my bmi being 25.3 if that helps to explain it) but I am carrying a bit of flab - not a lot, but several pounds. Admittedly I don't look
'fat' when clothed but objectively I could do with being a little leaner. I agree with the poster who said that our perception of overweight has shifted due to the super morbidly obese

WorraLiberty · 19/08/2012 23:06

I got asked twice if I was pregnant when I was a size 10, weighed 8st.3lbs and had a BMI absolutely well within range.

Guess why that was?

It was because as slim as I was everywhere else, my belly was fat.

It stuck out over my trousers and did make me look at least 3 or 4 months pregnant.

I was a size 10 and I was fat.

hmc · 19/08/2012 23:07

That post was to defineme

workshy · 19/08/2012 23:17

a good fried of mine would describe herself as fat

now I'm going to sound like a total bitch

she is fat

she is 5ft and has a very petite frame but has been asked several times when the baby is due

I'm a size 16 and at 6ft tall and athletic build, am not fat

dress size or BMI don't give true pictures of overweight or not

SoleSource · 19/08/2012 23:18

Sent rhonda a pn.

defineme · 19/08/2012 23:18

I do believe you hmc, but I'm guessing you're an apple or vase shape rather than a pear like me-if my arse gets in a size 12 (last time was when iwas 12) then I will be very slim Grin

WorraLiberty · 19/08/2012 23:20

That's so true workshy, I think a lot of it has to do with whether we are toned or not.

When my belly was fat at a size 10, I eventually toned it with lots of exercise.

I lost it and became slim again but I was still a size 10.

hmc · 19/08/2012 23:25

Indeed defineme - am an apple!

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 19/08/2012 23:26

Sounds to me like your mum is dillusional and actually thinks she looks more like you. That she's not really the size she is. I'd guess this is more to do with her own self-loathing than a real dig at you.

Not sure what you can do about it, sorry, but I don't think she's telling you your fat, I think she's trying to convince herself that she's not as bad as she is.

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 19/08/2012 23:28

*you're Blush

marilyntaylor · 19/08/2012 23:33

I'm 5ft 2" tall and I weigh 8st. I am a size 8. According to a BMI calculator I've just found on the internet, my bmi is currently 20.4. I consider myself slim. Earlier this year, before dieting, I weighed 10st 10lbs and wore mostly size 12 clothes. My bmi was 27.2. I was overweight. I didn't do any excercise and got out of breath very easily. I was most definitely a fat size 12, and I know which size/weight is better for someone of my height and frame. My SIL is much taller than me. She is also slim. She is however a size 14. WorraLibery is right, dress size alone doesn't indicate whether a person is fat or not.

FutTheShuckUp · 19/08/2012 23:35

When I was 5'2 and ten stone six I was wearing size 14-16 clothes

FutTheShuckUp · 19/08/2012 23:39

My point being maybe some people are a fat size whatever because they are wearing a smaller clothes size than they should

marilyntaylor · 20/08/2012 00:13

Last summer, when I was at my fattest, I bought 2 pairs of size 14 trousers, because the size 12s in that particular style did fit me, but were rather tight. Apart from these 2 items I've never worn a size anything larger than a size 12 in my life. I was definitely a fat size 12 though. I had a fat tummy, fat thighs, fat arms and rolls of fat on my back. Underneath all the fat however, I had a small frame and didn't need anything larger than a size 12. It doesn't mean I wasn't fat though. Obviously, there are a lot of slim size 12s too, and I said previously my SIL is a slim size 14 as are many other women I know.

olympicblues · 20/08/2012 00:19

My bmi is fine, I am a black belt at judo. I'm 5 ft 7 and always been stocky shouldered and legged (damn judo)

I'm sure it is olympicblues and I apologise for your thread going somewhat 'orf topic' Blush Grin

You've gotta love the internet!

olympicblues · 20/08/2012 00:24

And what pumpkin said, I'm not asking her whether I am fat or not, I'm happy as I am. I wouldn't go up to someone in street or a friend and say " hey look your fat like me!!" Wink

Sorry x post worra. Smile

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 20/08/2012 00:28

Absolutely!

It's just that (as has been said by many) a clothes size can never be an indication of whether anyone is or isn't fat.

There are far too many variables in both the clothes themselves and the people who wear them.

WorraLiberty · 20/08/2012 00:31

Meant to say, ballroom dancing sounds like fun.

It might even be a way to bring you closer together and that in itself may have a very positive effect.

Personally I'd just be glad it's not Salsa cos that really is knackering Grin

Iteotwawki · 20/08/2012 04:53

Dress size is no indication of fatness, slimness or otherwise.

BMI is an indication for the majority of the population (but not muscular athletes).

Neither is an indication of levels of "internal" fat or cardiopulmonary fitness - I would rather anaesthetise a size 18 bmi 35 non smoking long distance swimmer over a skinny heavy smoking couch potato any day.

FWIW, I'm a size 12-14 and most definitely fat. The OP has stated quite clearly that she isn't.

Ballroom dancing sounds awesome, I've always wanted to be able to dance.

Methe · 20/08/2012 05:19

I'm 11.5 stone, 5"4' and a size 12/14. According to BMI I am obese! 12/14 nowerdays in most shops is fat.

Chandon · 20/08/2012 07:36

well, I wear size 12-14 and am not overweight, BMI of 23, am 6ft. Bit of a belly after summer hol indulgence but working on that!

Even though "technically" I am not fat, I do feel too fat at the mo (too much wobbly flesh). I do hate being called fat or big though (by my skinny boys or my skinny size 6 friends).
