My dad gets someone's name in his head wrong and he never corrects it. He has called my cat Ellen for years and her name is Ella...even though every time we correct him. My new son is called Jude....and now he has started calling him judy...arrah what to do?????

Correct him every time. Eventually he'll remember to say it right.

keely027 · 17/08/2012 09:41

Believe me, I have been correcting him over my cat everytime for 12 years..he just goes ....ohhhhh you know what I mean...my mum has started calling him dude now to make things worse....

My son is called Jude. We call him Judy all the time to wind him up. He's 11, it doesn't bother him, he knows its a joke. Sorry, thats not very helpful. Congrats on the lovely name for your new baby!

keely027 · 17/08/2012 09:42

Nip it in the bud! My son is called Jude and we had a bit of this very early on, but I told people straight away, the first time I heard them do it, and it stopped quickly. We call him Judo, which is super cute and really suits him! Great name!

keely027 · 17/08/2012 09:45

I have even started to call my dad Dave, when his name is Tom to make a point..he just laughs and thinks its funny. Any tips on how to nip it in the bud when people just fob you off after you correct them?

3monkeys3 · 17/08/2012 09:48

I used to say, 'please don't call him Judy, it's a girl's name'. I suppose it's much harder if you're dealing with someone who thinks it's funny though.

MagicHouse · 17/08/2012 09:49

I would point out that you DO NOT want him calling your son Judy, rather than just correct him. Haul him up on it everytime. And don't let him get away with saying "oh you know what I mean!" Say, "no I don't know what you mean, it's a girl's name for my little boy and I don't like it at all, you are really upsetting me calling him that." Every time! Make him practise the name!

I think it's a lovely name too! Congratulations.

MadStaringEyes · 17/08/2012 09:50

Dp's parents called Ds1 Nathan till he asked who they were talking to. He was only even called Ethan because it was the only name they liked.

My nanna calls Ds2 Alexandria, and even calls us to tell us there is a boys version. Even Christmas presents had Alexandria on. He is called Alexander.

Just smile and correct him. Soon enough your lo will correct him for you.

glastocat · 17/08/2012 09:50

One of my relations (not my side of the family) used to call my son Maxey .

Got right on my tits very last nerve.
The number of times I said through gritted teeth "His name is Max" it's a one syllable, three letter name. How fecking difficult is it to get it right

glastocat · 17/08/2012 09:55

Its only a family joke thing though, believe me he gives as good as he gets! Grin

QuintessentialShadows · 17/08/2012 09:56

You are living dangerously, with a dad like this, and calling your son Jude....
It was inevitable, no?

PooPooOnMars · 17/08/2012 09:57

Does he have memory problems?

keely027 · 17/08/2012 09:57

Quint...I honestly never crossed my mind he could fuck up a name as simple as Jude!!!!!!!

3monkeys3 · 17/08/2012 09:58

glasto my dh rhymed every single name I suggested with something or other and then told me he liked Jude, which rhymes with everything! I love it though! Had real trouble naming ds2 as I didn't think there was anything as good out there (although I think his name is just as good now obviously)!

keely027 · 17/08/2012 09:59

Poo...not officially, he has always mixed words up, but never calls anyone else wrong names...apart from my cat of course

OP posts:
keely027 · 17/08/2012 09:59

I mean who would call a cat ELLEN?

OP posts:
jamdonut · 17/08/2012 10:05

Is he actually teasing him, or is it affectionate,nick-name style?

My grandma used to go through the whole family's names (Mum,sister, aunts, cousins!) before finding the right name to call me!(Mind you she did this to everyone) Sadly, I do this with my own children!

To be fair, My husband calls our kids random names...they just answer to them now!

keely027 · 17/08/2012 10:10

No, he's not treading hes five months..sometimes he seems annoyed when correct him

God, my Mother does this with DS3's name. He is called Reuben, we call him Roo (like little Roo from Winnie the Pooh) for short.

She insists on calling him Ruby. Angry. I pull her up on it EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

It's a very traditional name. She hates it because it is a 'Jewish' name (my mother is very racist, despite her own heritage...). Which is made even more amusing by the fact that her own Great Grandma was a Polish Jew, and my Ex's family are Jewish.

Just makes me Angry. It's NOT that hard to call him Reuben or Roo, rather than a girl's name.

glastocat · 17/08/2012 10:19

Does anyone else think Ellen is a lovely name for a cat? Grin

keely027 · 17/08/2012 10:22

Hahaha....Ellen is NOT a lovely name for a cat :)
