To leave children asleep in house whilst in the garage

Not sure if this is posted in the right place but wanted some opinions on what others would do as it feels a bit strange somehow.

We have garage that is attached to our house however you need to go outside for about 1 metre to go inside the garage. Inside the garage my husband has his gym gear and we are wondering if others would leave their kids asleep in house (with baby monitor) whilst the grown up was in the garage/gym? This is so I can go out (to my actual gym down the road) while he is in the garage/gym with the baby monitor? It is only one night a week where we have this schedule clash.

Kids are 4.5 and 23 months (in cot) We haven't done it yet as not sure if it is the right thing to do?

I think that is fine :)

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 16/08/2012 15:17

I would.

MissFaversam · 16/08/2012 15:17

I'd say it's perfectly fine with baby monitor.

YouBrokeMySmoulder · 16/08/2012 15:18

blimey I would do it without the baby monitor.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 16/08/2012 15:19

Id have worried about this when mine were little, but looking back I can see that it was me being over protective.

Leave the monitor on and tell the 4 yo where you are so that they aren't scared if they wake up and an use the baby monitor to get your attention.

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 16/08/2012 15:20

i would

2beornot · 16/08/2012 15:22

I'd do it. Especially with the monitor

mumeeee · 16/08/2012 15:22

Sounds perfectly fine to me.

Pseudo341 · 16/08/2012 15:23

Surely it's no different to sitting out in your garden? I do it all the time, and the bottom of my garden's quite a bit further away than your garage from the sound of it. So long as your in range of the baby monitor and actually on the property somewhere it's fine. I went to a jubilee street party immediately outside my front gate with the baby monitor clipped on to my top, couldn't have gone if it was at the other end of the street though.

I have an en block garage 5 houses, a block of garages and carpark away. I regularly leave DC asleep while I go to get something from the garage (with baby monitor) my DC are 6mo and 2.

Its no different from either of you sitting in the garden. I would say its fine.

Catandthecream · 16/08/2012 15:28

Oh cool, thanks for the replies, very true about being in the garden too. Will tell DH mumsnetters think it's fine!

Yes. but do let them know where he will be, so they don't worry if they wake up and no one appears to be there.

You could even tell them about the baby moniter, and how you can hear them through it, but not if the 4yo is likely to "cry wolf"!

2beornot · 16/08/2012 15:49

I'd do it. Especially with the monitor

TroublesomeEx · 16/08/2012 16:11

Yes I'd do it too.

I assume I have read the ages correctly - 4.5 and 23 months and not 4.5 (years) and 23 months?

SoleSource · 16/08/2012 17:22

YDnbu gar as ge next to house is part of house.

ILiveInAPineapple · 16/08/2012 21:20

I go out to my garage all the time when DS is in bed, I agree with the others, it's fine :-)

Catandthecream · 16/08/2012 21:38

Folkgirl, it is one 4.5 year old and a 23 month old.

I think it sounds fine - the only thing I would do is explain to the 4 and a half year old where your dh is so she didn't panic if she woke up and thought no-one was there. Tell her to talk into the monitor if it seems like no-one is in the house and her dad will hear her straightaway.
