To ask if only beautiful girls take A-levels?

Just predicting for tomorrow when the papers will print pictures of beautiful, slim, happy, bubbly girls jumping for joy when they get their results :)

Maybe teenage boys just can't turn on the enthusiasm for the photographers.

I did hear last year that schools emailed photographers extolling the virtues of their female pupils and how photogenic they are.

But I could be proved wrong tomorrow.

maybe happy people just look better?

where did you hear that tosh about schools emailing photographers?

WorraLiberty · 15/08/2012 12:21

Which schools emailed photographers?

enimmead · 15/08/2012 12:22

The FT - a reliable source

YANBU, I know just the sort of photos you mean! It's as if photogenic looks count for more than academic achievements, and as if it's still "surprising" that attractive girls can be clever.

Petsinmyolympicpudenda · 15/08/2012 12:23

Really? On the news here you see loads of boys and other pupils hugging and crying?

Schools pimping out the good-looking ones sounds like complete bullshit

Grin I know what you mean op.

Whenever its hot there's always pictures of young beautiful women on the beach, because chubby middle aged men don't like the sun.

If there's some horrible accident they will always be the picture of the most beautiful young woman. Everyone will be sad because such a beautiful woman lost her life, never mind all the others that died, the older or uglier ones.

WorraLiberty · 15/08/2012 12:27

The tumblr one is a biased blog where someone has deliberately sought out photos of girls....

onetiredmummy · 15/08/2012 12:28

I don't recall any of this leaping about when I got my A level results (in 1994). All I remember is a 'thank fuck I've passed' moment then I went home & told my mum.

OuEstCoco · 15/08/2012 12:28

YANBU

enimmead · 15/08/2012 12:28

Just wait and see tomorrow :)

I noticed that too. Lots of pictures of middle class girls grinning and a few token 'from rough backgrounds' interviews. Boys are too cool to look bothered.

TroublesomeEx · 15/08/2012 12:31

I'm going to agree with you in advance enimmead.

TheWoollybacksWife · 15/08/2012 12:32

My DD1 will be collecting her A-level results tomorrow. In the past the pupils from her school that are photographed for the paper are the multiple A* students - this year that is likely to be two boys both of whom are hardworking and focussed and deserve the recognition. If the paper does take her photo I'll be buying every copy in my local shop and sending it to every relative I've got Grin

OuEstCoco · 15/08/2012 12:32

Same here (and same year as you). But I do recall the papers always seeming to illustrate their "record A level passes" stories with pictures of pretty girls with long hair, jumping for joy.

FeakAndWeeble · 15/08/2012 12:37

I'm just anticipating the usual guff about the dumbing down of exams, thus obliterating all sense of pride and achievement from the people who've worked their arses off to get good grades.

enimmead · 15/08/2012 12:40

Plus twins achieving all A* - that's a good picture as well.

Mind you - Gove is planning to make A-levels harder so maybe not as many happy children next year ?

Latara · 15/08/2012 12:43

I've definitely noticed this in most national newspapers (the local paper is less 'looks biased' happily).
Many of those featured tend to have long blonde hair...

Just wait & see :)

carocaro · 15/08/2012 12:47

Girly swots tend to love the limelight, geeky boys are tool cool for that sort of thing!

QuenelleOJersey2012 · 15/08/2012 12:47

Don't worry, they'll all have the smiles wiped off their faces when the first 'A levels aren't as hard as they used to be' article appears.

MAYBELATERNOWIMBUSY · 15/08/2012 23:40

and the very nec. mouth open to max .and tongue waving about!

MissM · 16/08/2012 08:29

When I got my A levels it was pouring with rain. I slunk in, got my results, burst into tears and ran back to the car where my mum was waiting (I'd forbidden her to come in with me!) Mind you, I had hair like Kate Bush (it was 1988) so wouldn't have had a photo taken of me anyway Grin

I agree with others - it tends to be the national papers that show the pretty long-haired girls. The locals tend to be much more realistic.

MelanieSminge · 16/08/2012 08:35

it's true there's always these pix of pretty middle class white girls with flowing tresses looking delighted. As for schools 'pimping them out' to photographers, nothing would surprise me.

MelanieSminge · 16/08/2012 08:36

and with that open mouthed smile yes!
yuk.
