Some of my La Leche League friends have just shown me this and I am totally surprised that this supposed 'doctor' can spout this crap in a national newspaper?!

www.mirror.co.uk/lifestyle/health/when-should-you-stop-breast-feeding-1259599

And then we discover she has links to Nestle... what a surprise...

Miriam Stoppard you should be ashamed of yourself for writing this totally innacurate rubbish.

so lovebunny you should know better than make a comment like that. Its almost as bad as the MS one about bf stopping once teeth come in

Laikaloo · 14/08/2012 23:07

To be honest it's really a little breath of fresh air and a welcome antidote for the constant pressure faced by new mums to breastfeed when for whatever reason they want to stop. The "breast feeding mafia" have a lot to answer for when it cones to making new mums feel inadequate and guilty. After the initial week or so breast is not always best!

50shadesofslapntickle · 14/08/2012 23:13

What on earth are you talking about laikaloo? This is not about bf v ff, this is about a supposed doctor spouting total garbage and giving people the wrong information! How is that a breath of fresh air? You need to stop being defensive and understand that giving out the wrong info is not a breath of fresh air it's just wrong.

The main problem with Stoppards article is she doesn't know enough about nutrition, let alone bfing.

50shadesofslapntickle · 14/08/2012 23:33

Aye. She doesnt know a lot about anything, silly woman!

OP posts:
cornflowers · 14/08/2012 23:35

I've met her through work. Utter utter cow.

shezzle · 14/08/2012 23:37

I can believe that!

chocoluvva · 14/08/2012 23:42

"shoulder the burden of responsibility"!!! Eh? What nonsense!
The picture in Time magazine she mentions has been slated as being provocative and deliberately posed to be shocking. No child stands on a chair to breastfeed for goodness sake.
Miriam Stoppard is a GP as in 'general' ie NOT expert (not on nutrition or children's development anyway).

chocoluvva · 14/08/2012 23:43

MS IS an expert....... on making money.

shezzle · 14/08/2012 23:44

A little breath of fresh air would be, to me personally, better support all round from health visitors, doctors etc supporting you in however you decide to feed your baby. Making information available, which is up to date and correct! There is no right or wrong choice, but feeding people the WRONG and potentially dangerous advice is plain ignorant.

SirBoobAlot · 14/08/2012 23:48

A breath of fresh air would be sufficient breastfeeding support and reduced formula company power.

shezzle · 14/08/2012 23:49

"The mother on the Time cover believes in letting her child decide when breast-feeding should stop."

"I?ve never heard anything so irresponsible."

Honestly has this woman had her head in the sand for 40 years? I think there are many many more things people could be doing that are considered irresponsible- oh actually hang on Miriam, talking of irresponsible...

chocoluvva · 14/08/2012 23:51

Yes indeed, SirBoobAlot. When my DS was in hospital aged 11months the registrar was disapproving of him still being breastfed. In a children's ward!
For goodness sake!

ivykaty44 · 14/08/2012 23:51

normal means average - if the average was 4 years old for breast feeding then would she suddenly change her stance, well hell no not when she has an agenda with a powder baby milk company and there propaganda wants mothers to be brainwashed into thinking bf past 6 months is some type of monster act Sad

shezzle · 14/08/2012 23:53

Agreed sirboobalot, but not everyone wants or is able to breastfeed to be fair. There has to be other options. I am all for bfing but having had 3 children now each experience has been different, couldn't feed dd2, dd's1 and 3 were fine. It is a very personal thing.

shezzle · 14/08/2012 23:54

I have every intention of continuing until dd3 decides otherwise!

pigletmania · 14/08/2012 23:58

i had issues with bf dd and had to put her on formula, with ds i am expressing and feeding him formula if he needs any extra. I am happy each day that i am able to give him bm, 6.5 months so far yay Smile

shezzle · 15/08/2012 00:02

That's lovely pigletmania Grin

SirBoobAlot · 15/08/2012 00:07

Well done, Piglet!

Shezzle - Breastfeeding is the minority, I think everyone is well aware of formula. So there is no need for the advertising, and especially no need for idiots like this woman who use her position to subliminally undermine breastfeeding at every opportunity.

pigletmania · 15/08/2012 00:11

thanks everybody, i want to keep it going for another few months as long as supply is there. it is hard going, wish he wuld have latched on but no, it was easier expressing than to try and latch on ds who keeps screaming and thrashing at the breast Sad

shezzle · 15/08/2012 00:15

Sirboobalot I agree she is a complete moron.

Scarredbutnotbroken · 15/08/2012 01:03

god i am releived this thread has been pleasant and reasons. there is a bun fight going on, on fb just now about this article. lots of bf chatting about MS being a daft bint lining her pockets with nestle cash. then some ff waded in and got all huffy. there are tons of ff/bf debates but this isnt one.

imo, however you end up feeding your baby, as a parent you have a right to make an informed choice about the facts of both. MS is not promoting informed choices - she is peddling marketing spin and thats v dangerous.

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 15/08/2012 01:22

She's a doctor? How? "Nature arranges for [teeth] to erupt when they need food that needs chewing?? Can someone tell me why my ten month old has no teeth then? Is she saying my ten month old doesn't need food? Did she find her qualifications free in a box a cereal?

NoComet · 15/08/2012 01:35

I've already said the article is utter and total rubbish on the other thread.

However, I am the proud owner of one FF DD1 who hated breast feeding and hadn't a clue how to do it. And one DD2 who loved BF to the extent she could have posed for TIme Magazine without the chair.
