To precis, Royal Mail (in conjunction with the Paralympic committee) have decided to issue a series of 6 stamps commemorating all the Gold medallists.

All British gold medallists in the "regular" Olympics got their own individual stamp.

Their reasoning is that there are many more likely Gold medallists at the paralympics, therefore it would be a financial and logistical nightmare to produce.

Surely if that's the case, then there should only be a 6-stamp series for the Olympics, in the name of fairness and equality?

The training, effort and acheivement for the individual are the same, only the sport and/or name are different?

Or Am I Being Unreasonable and slightly ignorant?

YANBU.

Did you see that loads of women's teams were flown in in economy while the mens' teams flew first or business? Despite in some cases the women being more successful?

I really enoyed the olympics but this is the sort of stuff that leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.

Aren't they giving money to disability sport instead of doing the stamp?

Namechanger. It would be IMPOSSIBLE to produce them in the time frame with the amount of winners.

Trust me, I Know What I Am Talking About.

Wink

Not sure how fair it is, I do think it's a shame.

I suspect if they had known we were going to win as many golds as we did they would never have done it!

After all in 1996 we one exactly one gold medal (Redgrave / Pincent in case you are wondering). I have images of Royal mail staff sobbing "not another gold - please no more!" whilst shamelessly cheering on the opposition.

Seriously though - I'd have thought that the reason the gold medal stamps is profitable (if it is) is because lots of people are buying the stamps to keep and so they get the price of a stamp and no delivery work needed. Presumably not enough people would buy the Paralympic ones. (Not least cos we won 42 golds in Beijing and are expecting more this year which would cost you an abso.ute fortune!)

paralympics are the not The Olympics. They are not THE fastest or strongest or highest. They are the fastest in a narrow band of similarly handicapped athletes. For example at least 14 categories of swimmers. May as well have age groups for the olympics then and make it a masters event too if you think they are the same.

I've held a gold Paralympic medal and fuck me if it didnt feel JUST as impressive as I imagine an Olympic one would.

YANBU.

VikingLady · 14/08/2012 16:04

Wow WelshMaenad - what in? I am slightly starstruck. Never typed spoken with a medallist before!

Thumbwitch · 14/08/2012 16:08

YANBU. Considering that the RM will bring out commemorative stamps for any old crap to make more money out of collectors, there's no reason for them to discriminate against the Paralympian gold medallists. Poor show, Royal Mail!
