No explanation from MN as to why the thread was deleted. Because one person got completely the wrong end of the stick?

Hmm

Which thread?

WhereMyMilk · 12/08/2012 23:49

Which thread of the many?

Bit bonkers here at the mo.

Northernlurker · 12/08/2012 23:49

This is not a very helpful post! Which thread?

MysteryThing · 12/08/2012 23:50

It's gone Black - I just posted this so I could report it to MN as a protest.

Perfectly innocuous thread with some interesting contributions. One person got arsey, thread gone. Hmm

LaurieFairyCake · 12/08/2012 23:50

Well they were all abusing each other a wee bit

LordOfThe5Rings · 12/08/2012 23:50

Which thread?

If you're on about one of two that I got annoyed about then no, you aren't being unreasonable.

There is being careful and then there is freedom of speech.

Ah heck I'm alright. I was one of the first to Twitter Ryan Gigg's name and I'm still waiting to hear from his soliciter, considering he's sueing everyone who mentioned his name... Can't Imogen why cough.

LordOfThe5Rings · 12/08/2012 23:51

Least we don't have it as bad as some countries.

MysteryThing · 12/08/2012 23:51

It was about the use of the term 'harelip', which I found offensive - most other people didn't and thought I was being silly, but a few agreed that it was an outmoded and unnecessary term. No reason that I can see to delete the thread, and no explanation.

Just a bit poor from MNHQ, imo.

OP posts:
LordOfThe5Rings · 12/08/2012 23:52

What does it even mean, anyway? I never figured that one out. >.

MysteryThing · 12/08/2012 23:52

I think you all think I'm talking about a much more interesting thread than I mean. Blush

I was just irritated that they erased it for no discernable reason.

As you were. Blush Grin

puds11 · 12/08/2012 23:53

Is it not a cleft lip? Is that right?

DottyWottyDooDah · 12/08/2012 23:54

I thought thread deletion seemed ott too. Interesting discussion I thought. One person ran away with a misinterpretation. Why a whole thread gone?

HarrietSchulenberg · 12/08/2012 23:55

I read that thread about 10 mins ago and didn't see anything offensive. I must either have a very thick skin or have missed something.

MysteryThing · 12/08/2012 23:58

Lord it's an archaic term referring to cleft lip and cleft palate.

Now it looks like I'm just trying to resurrect the thread in a different form. I'm not, I was just annoyed that it was deleted when there were some interesting and informative contributions from people and the thread might have made some people reassess their usage of the term. Sad

MysteryThing · 13/08/2012 00:00

Harriet one person got totally the wrong end of the stick when someone posted the historical context of the usage of the word (thus explaining why it's offensive). She became abusive. Her posts were deleted, which is fine and proper, but then the thread was too! Confused

OP posts:
puds11 · 13/08/2012 00:00

I dont think i have ever heard anyone say it, although it was used in the book the kite runner.

roundtable · 13/08/2012 00:02

I couldn't see why it warranted deletion.

One person misunderstood and got riled and offensive. Just delete their posts surely?

puds11 · 13/08/2012 00:02

What was the misunderstanding?

wannabeamillionaire · 13/08/2012 00:03

ok, lets calm this down please....... I am not drunk :)... I did not find the term "hare lip and cleft palate" offensive I was not impressed by the term "satan"... oh well work morro...

OlympiaMumsnet · 13/08/2012 00:03

Hello
Apologies for the delay in getting back to your email, OP

We deleted the original thread because it contained lots of personal attacks and also contained disablist posts.

Thanks

LordOfThe5Rings · 13/08/2012 00:05

Delete the offending poster, not everyone. Wouldn't it make sense to delete 1 post instead of 100?

I haven't heard of it before. Obviously I've heard of a cleft palette but only ever heard it called that.

Needs to get out more, probably.

MysteryThing · 13/08/2012 00:06

If you're worried about disablism, MNHQ, then you should have let the thread stand! Hmm

Ah you live and you learn, I guess.

This song reminds me of Phil Mitchell...:)

Birdsgottafly · 13/08/2012 00:07

I supposed that it could be deemed to be insensitive to be arguing about language whilst a child sex offender is on the loose.

If you were connected to the child in any way, you would quite rightly be thinking, wtf.

LordOfThe5Rings · 13/08/2012 00:08

"TALKIN' BOUT MY GENERATIONNNN!"

In the good old crack days.

No, I'm not nuts.

It was on the radio playing at the time.

Oh and there is worrying about being anti disabled and then there is not allowing all views. Any offensive comments should be deleted, but not the ones that aren't offensive.

I am partially sighted, but accept all views as long as not hateful. Open, honest and curious is not a crime imho.
