To dislike trendy spellings of names?

Continuing with the names theme, do you like or understand it when parents change the spelling of their child's name? Why do they do this? For example Mc Kayla, Shevonne or Izak. AIBU?

Each to their own. However, when I got pregnant I did discount some of the trendy (actually 'hippie' is probably more appropriate) names that I had previously loved, because I felt like I should give her a name that she could carry with her into adult hood. My own name is generally considered to be a 'boys' name. My parents could have given me a girly version but didnt. As a kid, I hated teachers calling the register and looking for a boy. I envied girls with pretty names like Megan, Ellen and Lydia (names of three girls I went to school with). As an adult, I am used to it, but still wish my name was pretty!!

A lot of these are not weird spellings, they're just Not English. Hmm

perfectstorm · 06/09/2012 09:39

Alys is the original spelling though, isn't it? I'm sure I've seen it spelled that way in reference to early mediaeval figures. (And agreed on the foreign not being "odd".)

SamuelWestsMistress · 06/09/2012 09:40

It's really chavvy IMO. It's like how children used to misspell names on Christmas cards! Now the parents seem to have misspelt the names because it's "cool".

I came across a Typhanie once, took me a while to work it out!

EasilyBored · 06/09/2012 09:43

Is it bad that I look at Typhanie and just see Typhoo?

I think creative spelling makes a lot of sense if the conventional spelling to get the pronunciation you want makes no sense in local overwhelmingly dominant language (e.g. in England, Neeve for Niamh).

I have a creative spelling version of my (quite ordinary) name, I chose it & I like it. I don't give a toss if people use the usual spelling in informal situations, like personal letters, emails, hair dresser, etc. I think it's weird that anyone would care in those situations. I gave my children extremely boring conventional spellings to make life easy.

Nanny0gg · 06/09/2012 09:56

Oh. Interesting. I thought Chrissy was a normal way of spelling and wasn't Alys a middle-ages name?
An actress from CSI was called Jorja. (never did like her).

See, I think that's completely reasonable. If someone wants to choose a creative name for themselves, then totally fair enough. It's when they inflict that on their kids that I start to twitch. You've done it the fair way round.

MuddlingMackem · 06/09/2012 10:15

Franck got a mention earlier as a dodgy spelling, but I think that might be the regular French spelling.

And after fatlazymummy's post, I'm now convinced that she's an 'Anne-with-an-E'. LOL!

TheLazyGirlBlog · 06/09/2012 10:32

I thought so too, but apparently not! Even the school spelt it wrong the first year, with a "ie" instead. No such issue with ds, he's an Edward, spelt as the world intended.

bubalou · 06/09/2012 10:56

My name is Kate.

I once got introduced at a meeting to a woman who said 'Hi I'm Kate' - I said 'Oh me too, two Kates - that spells trouble, nice to meet you' with a friendly smile / laugh.

She looked at me sternly and said - No, I'm Kate with a C and a Y. ???

Fair enough on the spelling - Cayte - but the pronunciation was still Kate.

paha - precious much. Confused

VonHerrBurton · 06/09/2012 11:07

Oh no, Lazy, Chrissy's lovely! Much nicer than really boring sorry Holly/Hollie/Hollay/Hollee...!

perfectstorm · 06/09/2012 11:20

My first thought was Anne of Green Gables too.

perfectstorm · 06/09/2012 11:22

Bubalu she corrected your spelling of her name when you'd only said it? As a way of explaining that she didn't share your bog-standard name? God. How self-involved.

For the record, I really love Kate. It's so simple and pretty. When I was at school there were always at least 2 or 3 in every year, and I still never got bored of it. This is what I don't get about fancy spellings: there are so many lovely names in the world. Why do that?

TheGOLDCunnyFunt · 06/09/2012 11:38

I know people whose DC are named these -
Worren
Ryleigh (girl)
Mai
Mae
Kym

bubalou · 06/09/2012 11:51

thank you perfectstorm

Yes it was very odd - I completely understand people correcting me if I had spelt it wrong but she almost turned her nose up as if to say 'I don't share the same name as you' - it was very odd.

I always get called Katie and have for years always been asked 'what is your full name' when I say Kate I often get 'is it not Katherine or Catlyn or Katie? etc'.

I thought Kate was a proper name. Haha. Confused

degutastic · 06/09/2012 12:17

I have the correct / historical spelling of a traditional name which is commonly misspelt. It does drive me a bit batty when people repeatedly misspell it, especially on formal documents which need ammended partly because I'm a linguistic purist and it doesn't make any sense in the original language when misspelt

Unrelatedly, I think Cait is a lovely variation. Don't like Cayte though Grin

TheGOLDCunnyFunt · 06/09/2012 12:54

Oh yes Kate/Katie confusion annoys me. Really bugged me when Will and Kate were in the news a lot and people kept calling her Katie Hmm

Loads of people spell my name wrong, my name is Melanie, I've seen Mellonie, Melany, Melony, Melonie, Melinie, Melunie (wtaf at the last 2???). It's ridiculous. And when DD was born we got a couple of cards with 'ie' instead of 'y' at the end of her name. I'd never even seen the 'ie' spelling before!!

frayededges · 06/09/2012 13:49

i worked with a Linzii - sigh she was v loud-all the time.

TheLazyGirlBlog · 06/09/2012 14:19

Thanks VonHerrBurton I've gone off Holly now as well. No one in the family even refers to her as Chrissy now anyway, as her aunt is Christine (shortened to Chris by family), so she gets named Mini. Not that she is the youngest, she looks like a Mini version of her cousin, who is Niamh. Now DD is 5 and her cousin is 9, they look like twins they are that alike (and DD is very tall)
