To dislike trendy spellings of names?

Continuing with the names theme, do you like or understand it when parents change the spelling of their child's name? Why do they do this? For example Mc Kayla, Shevonne or Izak. AIBU?

We spell our DS's name slightly differently from the mainstream spelling, due to our native languages. I hope no one thinks he has a chavvy name!

None of yours.
But you just love starting stirry threads dontcha lik2chaaattoo

You can dislike whatever you want to dislike. But it's a bit trivial to give much thought to.

I gave my children boring names with boring spellings because I couldn't be asked to spell it out every time. Doesn't that make me an unimaginative lazy bint? My own name is a weird spelling, but I almost never care if other people mispell it, honestly, who cares 99% of the time? I just am too lazy to ask DC to put up with the same in case it does matter to them.

My sons name has a different spelling then the original. Do I care? No.

I don't care what people name their children never mind how they spell it.

slatternlymother · 12/08/2012 18:50

Can someone pimp my name please? I want an aura of self importance.

PrideOfChanur · 12/08/2012 18:59

I was all set to go ugh,yes "proper spellings" please - but I really like McKayla, and think it is a much more attractive and appealing spelling than Michaela...
So spell your child's name however you want (but be prepared for people to make assumptions because of it.)

JackJacksmummy · 12/08/2012 19:11

I once worked with a guy whose girlfriend called their baby mallisa (Melissa). I always thought they just got the spelling wrong because neither they nor their families were the brightest tool in the box. Then they went on to name their second child Peter - around the time of the baby p scandal...they called him "baby p" Sad

slatternlymother · 12/08/2012 19:23

Angry that is horrible jack

blueemerald · 12/08/2012 19:24

I agree, a fair few of my friends and I work in education and we've come across
Elyviya
Emmer-Leigh
Kymbalie

And my favourite Czaquiyah

I think they think it makes their child unique, not realising that every child is unique anyway [mushy icon]

Liketochat1 · 12/08/2012 19:25

Imagen, Chel C, Linzee. Oh dear!
It's up to the parents that's true but I wonder how their child will feel when no one can spell it? They won't spend a life time spelling out their name as their child will.
And I wonder how it will impact on their child's future career choices. I mean, like it or not, certain stereotypes exist around names spelt Chel C and Macsymillion.
Oh and the Ben thread got me thinking about names and what 'irks' me about some too. So I started a couple of threads on that. No biggie!

I know, AngrySad

Liketochat1 · 12/08/2012 19:27

Emmer-Leigh? Oh dear. And some posters don't think that particular spelling (and others like it) may affect a child in the future?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/08/2012 19:33

Emmer and Leigh are both names, though, aren't they?

cheekybarsteward · 12/08/2012 19:40

Tis very hchavvieeea

Groovee · 12/08/2012 19:50

Dd is spelled the correct Gaelic way of Eilidh but still people spell it Eiligh

PrideOfChanur · 12/08/2012 20:02

Emmer isn't a name,is it? Emma,or Emer(different of course), but not Emmer??

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/08/2012 20:04

Ah, sorry, I think I meant Emer. I guess to me, Emmer is close enough, it doesn't seem awful.

But then, DH knows someone called Julie-Anne and it took me ages to work out why that was a pun. Blush

comelywench · 12/08/2012 20:12

For the record i think Cait is a nice name. I was trying, very clumsily, to say that I'm so used to trying to puzzle out unusual spellings that I'm even missing perfectly reasonable names.

DS's has a "nickname" rather than a "proper" name so I have nothing against that at all.

Anyway, hope no one thinks I was having a go at Caits in general. I wasn't. Jakk however, I still object to that. Some of the others listed here are real crackers. As someone who had to spell their name all the time because it was unusual I can't imagine making DC have to spell their names all the time because I made them up.

Oh well, Variety's the spice of life and all that. Keeps things interesting. Emmer-Leigh for prime minister I say!

INeverFinishAnythi · 12/08/2012 20:13

I know a man called Kollyn (Colin) He thinks he is super-cool because of his (self styled) 'wacky' spelling. He is not.

mumnotmachine · 12/08/2012 20:18

Couldnt care less how people spell their kids names, I'm not a fan of alternative spellings of common names but maybe I'm just boring

Its the child I feel for spending their whole life spelling their name out to people!

LilyCocoplatt · 12/08/2012 20:22

In my local paper the recent baby names have included Karlee and Kelsea, made me Hmm I agree it seems to condemn the poor child to a lifetime of having to correct people on the spelling of their name.
