To dislike trendy spellings of names?

Continuing with the names theme, do you like or understand it when parents change the spelling of their child's name? Why do they do this? For example Mc Kayla, Shevonne or Izak. AIBU?

Tis vair bhorringg!

Xayide · 12/08/2012 20:32

My DC all have old fashioned names that have subsequently come back, we were ahead of the curve bizarrely- we spell them normally and actually they all spell as they sound.

I would love it if everyone else would stop shoving x,y,z,q or other random arse of the alphabet letters in their names.

We have to spell our surname - unusual and with an unpronounced e on the end to make life interesting - it is a bit wearing have to spell it every time.

Kayano · 12/08/2012 20:34

Saf-Fire was the worst I have seen!

Kayano · 12/08/2012 20:37

Oh and Meshell - michelle

And that was off supernanny USA!!!!

MaryHansack · 12/08/2012 20:38

I knew of a dad who had dyslexia and so the boy was called Zarkon when it was supposed to be Zircon....

peanutMD · 02/09/2012 09:47

The most exciting thing that ever happens with my first name is people ALWAYS add an E, its a PITA!

Although my surname is slightly different as it is pronounced without the E at the end and tbh its quite a commonly used word without this so when I get asked where I'm from because it sounds foreign it does baffle me, I also have to spell it constantly.

I don't like alternative spellings but each to their own I guess.

I know of a Page, Leeya, Sayra, Konor.

sashh · 02/09/2012 09:55

which is taken from Katheryn, which Karen came from, all meaning pure.

Actually that's a mistranslation - it means trouble. Anyone considering a Catherine/Catlyn / Kate etc should think about that.

EndoJ · 06/09/2012 01:44

Alyiah... pronounced Alee-yah, but looks like 'A liar' LOL

candytuft63 · 06/09/2012 01:54

I think it is so pretentious, sometimes.
My friends GD is called Lily and thats the way it pronounced. She spells it Lillee and takes great delight in correcting the spelling. At every opportunity.
Mneh.

perfectstorm · 06/09/2012 03:22

I met a (genuinely lovely, in fairness) woman in Birmingham once, who'd called her baby Keyanu. His cousin was called Keanu, and she said she loved the name but wanted something a bit more unusual for her own son. And I smiled and was polite, but all I could think was, you don't think Keanu is unusual enough?!

(Sorry if that mum is a MNer, btw. Your son is lovely and you were in every way a great mother to him, from what I saw. I just didn't think the name was a great move. None of my business either, obvs.)

perfectstorm · 06/09/2012 03:23

Oh, and I've now met two Katelyns.

Newtothisstuff · 06/09/2012 03:30

God you would all hate me then... We spelt DD2's name dodgy to be different, yeah she's either going to hate us or it's going to catch on and love it.. Either way shes stuck with it !! I've always had to spell my first name out and it's only a normal one.. Can't win either way I suppose !! Personally I love the spelling of her name it's unique Grin

ibizagirl · 06/09/2012 06:30

I also hate it. Friends children i can remember are: Franck, Emilie, Jaycke, Jessicka (really don't like that one) Lili (whats wrong with Lily?) and also a Milli Mai (rather than Millie/Milly May).

perfectstorm · 06/09/2012 07:45

Emilie isn't trendily misspelt, though. It's just the French version. No different to Louis/Lewis, Amelie/Amelia and so on. Jaycke and Jessika are awful, though, and as for Milli Mai... I don't know. I think weird names in general are unfair. It's parents asserting their own cool individuality at the expense of their kids.

GingerPCatt · 06/09/2012 08:19

My name while not trendy has a slightly different spelling than the norm (e instead of an I). It's really annoying to have to spell it out to people constantly and people frequently get it wrong in emails. FFS its spelled out in my email address but people don't always pay attention Angry. When naming DS I made sure the name had the normal spelling.

perfectstorm · 06/09/2012 08:53

Clayre is another odd one I've encountered. Don't know if that's a language variant or just invented?

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 06/09/2012 08:58

Actually that's a mistranslation - it means trouble. Anyone considering a Catherine/Catlyn / Kate etc should think about that.

How does that work then? I always thought Katharine - Katharsis - purification?

Nanny0gg · 06/09/2012 09:01

Lilie, Lilley and Lillie I've seen.
Luwei.
Domonik.
Alphie.

doradoo · 06/09/2012 09:02

my DDs middle name is Alys - pronounced Alice - which comes from her great great grandma. We deliberatly chose family names for all our DC and have some other odd spellings but all from direct ancestors - so not all quirky/mis-spellings are necessarily 'trendy' or trying to be creative/different.

My GGM was of Dutch origin which is where her name originates.

picnicbasketcase · 06/09/2012 09:10

I don't like it tbh, it doesn't make a child yoo-neek to have a weird spelling of a traditional name. You can't hear it when it's spoken and it just makes it harder to the child to learn to spell it and gives them a lifetime of saying 'Yes, it's pronounced Sarah but it has a silent Q in the middle'.

loopylou6 · 06/09/2012 09:11

I know of a Alivia

TheLazyGirlBlog · 06/09/2012 09:15

I have to hold up my hand here. DD is named Chrissy, spelt with a "y" instead of "ie", and people spell it wrong all the time. She gets it spelt "Crissy", "Krissy" and "Chrissie" all the time (which annoys her but she's 5).

In my defense, she is named after her Grandmother (DPs Mum), who was Christina but was never called that ever. If I had my way, she'd be Holly......

EasilyBored · 06/09/2012 09:17

There is a Gerber Generation baby photo contest thing on facebook. It reads like a train wreck of 's and Dewhatevers and Uniquierthanyou spelling disasters.

Brace yourself before googling.

HeavenlyChocolate · 06/09/2012 09:20

I don't mind some variations of spelling a name but I have heard of some rediculous ways too.

I know of a Jessicka and a Jorjea. But each to their own I suppose.

fatlazymummy · 06/09/2012 09:29

I don't really care how other people spell their children's names.
I have the most boring , simplest, traditional 4 letter name imaginable, and I still have to explain every single time that yes, it does have an E. Most people will probably have to explain how to spell their name.
