To ask whether Lexi is a 'real' name?

Having just commented on boys names that are drippy, I was put in mind of girl's names I don't especially like, because I don't think think they are 'real'. For example, Millie or Minnie and my biggest bugbear Lexi or Lexie. Aren't they just shortened versions of 'proper' names or nicknames? And I especially dislike Lexi as it rhymes with sexy. To me they are just all wrong!
What do you think? Are they real names? Are there any other names you think about like this?

It is a shortened version of Alexandra or Alexia.

"And I especially dislike Lexi as it rhymes with sexy."

That is just odd really to think that way.

TheSmallClanger · 12/08/2012 15:02

Lexi is normally short for Alexandra. It doesn't sound drippy to me. In the style of the "Linda is an admin person in a hospital" thread: Lexi is an aerobics instructor and teaches Pole Fitness at the local community centre.

What's a "real" name? Surely a name is just any combination of sounds that make a word?

WithoutCaution · 12/08/2012 15:11

I don't mind them as nicknames but if the parents just name them it as a proper name I'm a bit Hmm

TenaPenny · 12/08/2012 15:12

alexandra.
its like juicy lucy or spread your legs flora.
you know

CailinDana · 12/08/2012 15:13

I'm still a bit stumped as to what a "proper name" is though. Is Kate a "proper name" for example?

Kladdkaka · 12/08/2012 15:14

I wish I'd called my daughter Antigone then I could have shortened it to Tigger :(

TenaPenny · 12/08/2012 15:18

christ lucky escape,
youd have had to keep her away from walls

Salmotrutta · 12/08/2012 15:22

Your posts are ... interesting Tena. Hmm

kittyandthefontanelles · 12/08/2012 15:25

?

Kladdkaka · 12/08/2012 15:26

Well she's 19 now and still rather ... bouncy.

TenaPenny · 12/08/2012 15:27

well god if you have a kid called antigone at least read the play

Lucyellensmum99 · 12/08/2012 15:29

What is wrong with Juicy Lucy? FFS!!! That was the first thing my DP said when i told him the babies name was lucy, "ohh, thats cute, we can call her juicy lucy" (in my mind i think i named her after lucy pevensie from Narnia) St. Lucy was the patron saint of light.

Millie is a diminutive of millicent and as far as i am concerned a very nice name (my nan was called millicent - i like it).

Or should we all be calling our children "proper names" such as, such as............??

kittyandthefontanelles · 12/08/2012 15:30

Ah, a classics joke! Nice.

TenaPenny · 12/08/2012 15:30

nothing wrong with Juicy lucy if you like that kind of thing.

TenaPenny · 12/08/2012 15:30

bows

NCForNow · 12/08/2012 15:32

Lucy and Millie are proper names. But I wouldn't call a baby "Juicy Lucy" personally.

Lucyellensmum99 · 12/08/2012 15:32

What kind of thing Tena? Hmm Are you meaning to be so rude?

kittyandthefontanelles · 12/08/2012 15:33

Applauds. Throws Thanks

TenaPenny · 12/08/2012 15:33

NO! you are taking offence where there isnt any. If you like your kid called Juicy lucy then bully for you, i dont think i would

Kladdkaka · 12/08/2012 15:33

What's with the nasty? Confused

Lucyellensmum99 · 12/08/2012 15:33

Well i must be fucking niave then because its lost on me why that would be distasteful Angry

TenaPenny · 12/08/2012 15:35

i have no clue what you are all cross about.

Kladdkaka · 12/08/2012 15:37

Not cross, just wondering why you felt to need to reply so snottily to my post.

Lucyellensmum99 · 12/08/2012 15:38

Sexy lexie = inappropriate

Juicy lucy = cute bundle of babiness? We don't actually call her juicy lucy, sometimes we call her juicy - othertimes we call her loolah. I just find it a bit yucky the implication that it is somehow inappropriate way to refer to my daughter :(
