To ask whether Lexi is a 'real' name?

Having just commented on boys names that are drippy, I was put in mind of girl's names I don't especially like, because I don't think think they are 'real'. For example, Millie or Minnie and my biggest bugbear Lexi or Lexie. Aren't they just shortened versions of 'proper' names or nicknames? And I especially dislike Lexi as it rhymes with sexy. To me they are just all wrong!
What do you think? Are they real names? Are there any other names you think about like this?

Monarch of the Glen was where I first heard it and fell in love with it. She was one of the first original ones!!!Grin. Good old Scottish drama - none of this Yorkshire/East London stuff!!Wink [that's a joke before I get flamed!!Grin ]

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/08/2012 17:37

I love Juliana. It's an old form for Julia/Julian. I just like it. And Magdelana.

It's such a shame I wasn't born in 15th century Italy. Sad

MadeleineAlright · 12/08/2012 17:40

I know a Lexi in her 60s. Scottish.

rhondajean · 12/08/2012 17:41

DHs friend had a daughter and named it lexi and the first thing I said was, are they SURE? Because although I actually quite like it as a sound, that girl is going to have a hard time all the way through school.

Rowgtfc72 · 12/08/2012 17:42

We have a Lucy. Most people call her Luce. MIL calls her Loo LooHmm I call her Ginger Ninja .

usualsuspect · 12/08/2012 17:45

Of course its a name. Why on earth would someone have a hard time at school because their name is Lexie Confused

StatisticallyChallenged · 12/08/2012 17:47

It maybe depends on the area Rhonda, but there seem to be quite a lot of them kicking around up here at least. Because of that, I'd be very surprised if it the hard time is any worse than for a "Silly Lily", "Juicy Lucy" or "Smelly Ellie" - all top ten names and all equally as capable of having mean sounding nicknames.

rhondajean · 12/08/2012 17:52

I'd does have particular conotations - but I'm saying this as someone who had "randy" affixed to my name throughout secondary and found it particularly hard to deal with. You can make any name into a silly rhyme but one that rhymes with sexy is just grit for a certain type of teenage mill.

Which is a shame because, as I said, it's a nice name on its own.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/08/2012 17:53

Mmm. When I was growing up I knew a couple of girls called Alexia/Alexie and they were posh names back then. It's funny how fast things change.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/08/2012 17:54

Sorry. I mean, I would never have known it had the connotations rhonda mentions because I have thought of it as a posh name.

I think to be honest, if children were named A, B and C, you'd still find rhymes and nicknames made up, and parents saying 'Oh, no, you can't call DS C, that's awful'.

rhondajean · 12/08/2012 17:57

I know, I'm 36 and they'd have been on it like a ferret up a trouser leg when I was at school.

My name doesn't even rhyme with randy!

itsybitsy08 · 12/08/2012 18:00

My DD is lexie.

YABVU.

There are some arseholes on mumsnet.

Agree with usualsuspect I am totally Confused why on earth she would have a hard time at school because of her name.

FYI, no one has ever called her sexy lexie because she is four and that would be totally inappropriate, and luckily most of the people I know and spend time with are not arseholes.

also, It is a name, because it is hers. HTH :)

StatisticallyChallenged · 12/08/2012 18:03

Hmm, maybe the parents who named their boys "A" and "J" had the right idea?!

Tena

Are you aware your user name sounds like incontinence pads?

StatisticallyChallenged · 12/08/2012 18:08

scottish names registered

table 4 contains all the names registered in Scotland last year - it provided hours of entertainment in my office one day.

Olympicwidow · 12/08/2012 18:08

::High fives itsybitsy!!Grin::

I can imagine randy isn't a great connotation to have. But for a teenage girl being thought of as attractive which let's face it is what sexy means nowadays would be a compliment rather than anything else! But i can see that it could also be used badly. Bullying happens for all sorts of reasons and pretty much any name can be changed to be hurtful to someone or other. Or just how you look and there's not much you can do about wearing glasses or being ridiculously tall reallyConfusedConfused

9 yo DD has had a bit of an issue with plexiglass though? Whatever that is???Hmm

can't believe I'm getting sucked in here!

itsybitsy08 · 12/08/2012 18:10

Threads like this are unnecessary and offensive.

Why do you care? Don't think its a real name, don't use it, surely its no skin off your nose.

Sneer all you like, safe in the knowledge you have upset at least one person.

Words on a screen, yeah yeah, why do i care.

itsybitsy08 · 12/08/2012 18:13

Thanks olympicwidow :)

amillionyears · 12/08/2012 18:13

I could call my child qwerty if I wanted.Or uiop.
Once it is registered,it becomes the childs real name.No rules as far as i know.

rhondajean · 12/08/2012 18:14

That table is great.

There were 2 babies with dd2s name, none with dd1s or mines, and 11 with DHs registered in Scotland last year Grin

Olympicwidow · 12/08/2012 18:16

here!

Naming DD back in 2004, perhaps we started this upward trend.....!Grin

edam · 12/08/2012 18:21

If ds had been a girl she'd have been Lottie but with Charlotte on the birth certificate - after my very dear late Auntie Lottie. Charlotte on the birth certificate because shortened affectionate forms are nicknames, not proper names - little Charlie needs Charles in case he ever disagrees with his parents and wants a formal name for formal situations (or decides he'd prefer a different abbreviation).

ToadsPornFrogsPawn · 12/08/2012 18:43

My little Charlie is not a Charles and has never needed to be

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 12/08/2012 18:49

That's just silly. You would see offence in every name if it rhymed with something.

Who on earth thinks of sexy lexi when it's a child?

Op you are tenuous link tena in my opinion.
