To ask whether Lexi is a 'real' name?

Having just commented on boys names that are drippy, I was put in mind of girl's names I don't especially like, because I don't think think they are 'real'. For example, Millie or Minnie and my biggest bugbear Lexi or Lexie. Aren't they just shortened versions of 'proper' names or nicknames? And I especially dislike Lexi as it rhymes with sexy. To me they are just all wrong!
What do you think? Are they real names? Are there any other names you think about like this?

Lexi sounds like a stripper or pornstar name IMO.

TheVermiciousKnid · 13/08/2012 17:27

Not even Kylie? It think I might give up. :(

Kladdkaka · 13/08/2012 17:31

I haven't found an extended version of Sooty, but I'm not sure if that counts as he's a bear. And a puppet.

fruitysummer · 14/08/2012 09:20

What about Anthony - what's that a shortened version off???

And Levi/Levy??????

I went home from work thinking of this thread Blush

Inthepotty · 14/08/2012 09:33

Lucy also short for Luciana. My GD is Luciana. no one ever calls her it though . We call her Juice.

BambieO · 14/08/2012 10:08

How about Darcy/Darcie/D'Arcy?

Go easy Grin I plan to use one of the above for my baby due to pop out any day now!!

Kladdkaka · 14/08/2012 10:42

Anthony comes from Antonius

Levi doesn't follow the rule which is names ending in 'ie' or 'y'.

Levy could be the exception. Although I confess I've never seen it as a name only a type of tax/charge.

Darcy and Darcie are variations of D'Arcy, which is actually a surname meaning citizen of Arcy (a town in France)

RevoltingPeasant · 14/08/2012 10:53

Naomi, Suri, and Levi are all Hebrew afaik.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 14/08/2012 10:56

Yep, they're all Hebrew.

I think this is a dodgy question because it is purely about transliteration conventions and what counts as an abbreviation.

I suspect we need someone who speaks a non Indo-European language who can find us something transliterated differently from there.

I would like to know where Darcy comes from too - it used to be a man's name, now it's a woman's name, and it can be a surname, I think?!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 14/08/2012 10:57

What about 'Sidonie'? I looked it up and apparently it's from the Latin for 'from Sidon'.

Moominsarescary · 14/08/2012 11:42

Cory which in old English means chosen

Catinthebox · 14/08/2012 12:03

This thread is making me laugh!

I think we all attach connotations to names depending on our experience of them, or our own personal word play- we like the sound of people with names we associate with 'nice' people such as friends etc, and dislike the sound of people with names associated with less than happy things- a school bully etc. I have a Lucy in my family (now grown up) and she is 'Lucy Lastic' after the Macc Lads song, I just can't shake it! There is no offense in it at all.

When I was a child, Bob or Bobby was used to refer to poo. I alway snigger to myself when I hear someone has that name.

There is a fabulous burlesque performer called Lexi Sexx. An extremely talented performance artist. I will always assiciate that name with the artist now and expect people who share it to be some form of fantastically talented individual- will I be dissapointed?!

DappyHays · 14/08/2012 12:08

Haven't read thread as lost the will to live reading OP.

My daughter is called Alexandra and gets called Lexie. When she was born my elderly friend said Lexie was a very old fashioned name. When she was having her kids she saw Lexie as an old lady name.

Anyone calling a baby or small child "Sexy-Lexi/e" needs to look at themselves.

Oh and my other daughter has the middle name Lucy. If anyone dared called her Juicy they'd see the business end of my fist.

If you don't like a name, fairy snuff, but otherwise fuck off, why don't you?

M0naLisa · 14/08/2012 12:12

My ds2 is Alfie and not Alfred, should I have put Alfred on his birth certificate for legal reasons Hmm

And 'ie' and 'y' doesn't mean the name is a shortened version of another name what about my name?? Lisa??
That's short for ELisabeth. Also what about Jennifer? That name originates from Guinevere, so is therefore a shortened version without ie or y. Confused

LexiLondon · 15/08/2012 12:49

I think it's not really anyone's business what someone calls there child we're all different and therefore like different types of names, i couldn't give a damn if any one likes my daughters name, my dh and i love it.

My fil thinks that any name which started out as another name is not a name for instance can't use John - has to be christened Jonathan even if you'll never use the full name and will only ever call your child John. I think this is ridiculous, call your child what you want to and others will call there children what they want to.

Why do you concern yourself with what names other poeple obliviously love otherwise they wouldn't of called there dc it in the first place.

loopylou6 · 15/08/2012 14:56

I have a Charlotte who also gets called Lottie. I like the name Lexie.

BlueEyedPeas · 15/08/2012 15:08

Thats why there are millions of names, as everyone has different tastes, what you like others will not. My DD is called Lexi and I love it.

I can imagine that you were the type of person at school to start awful nick names.

IMO though, there are worse things to be called than 'sexy' Wink

OutOfVictoriaByBarbarosa · 15/08/2012 15:40

Lexi Doig is a very famous (and foxy!) lady who is very real with a very real name.

TheDreadedFoosa · 15/08/2012 15:48

The only lexi/ lexie's i have come across are dogs. All staffies, all trackie wearing owners.

nittyclitty · 15/08/2012 15:50

Luckily I don't tend to see many trackie wearing staffie dog owners round my way. I do know a sweet Lexi though Wink

BlueEyedPeas · 15/08/2012 15:58

TheDreadedFoosa, maybe you should think about moving!

TheDreadedFoosa · 15/08/2012 16:08

Why? (as it happens, I haven't lived in Lexi-central for many years, extended family still there though, but no need to move to get away from people in trackie bottoms surely??)
