People who stand too close in queues

Just been doing the weekly shop and finishing packing, getting card out to pay etc, when the guy behind me moves up to the packing end of the conveyor belt, so right in front of the card machine. Awkward moments, putting last few bags in trolley with him practically blocking me, and then had to move the card machine around the otherside so i could enter my pin without him standing over me.

I loathe people who stand too close in queues, especially those who just can't wait for someone to finish what they are doing before jumping in.

I wasn't faffing, just taking a normal/average amount of time to do it.

Didn't happen this time, but equally annoying are the counter staff who start serving the next person before you've even put your card away or grabbed your shopping/finished packing.

AIBU to think people should just bloody wait, and wait at a reasonable distance. A couple of minutes being polite really isn't that hard, is it?

This bugs me, i am afraid if I feel like I am being rushed I do take my time.

I was finishing packing my bags yesterday when the woman behind me came and started offering the money for her stuff to the check out operater. He was still holding my change as I had only just paid.

Inneedofbrandy · 12/08/2012 11:44

I would of said excuse me please, and looked at him till he moved back. Why didnt you if he was in your way?

Nigglenaggle · 12/08/2012 11:44

OMG this is (another) pet hate of mine!!! Personal space people, personal space!!! But we might both be being a tad over-reacty about it

grr! yes, exactly sirzy!

I think they belong in the same camp as people in petrol stations who jump queues to put the exact change for their fuel on the counter and then peg it out the door.

Oh, I hate it too. I just look them firmly in the eye and say a bright 'excuse me' whilst baring my teeth smiling at them. Works a treat Grin

Salmotrutta · 12/08/2012 11:47

No, it isn't that hard.

People are often very rude though and I hate feeling rushed like that.

I hate seeing elderly people being hurried like that too - they often need extra time to put things away and move off. Sad

TheMysteryCat · 12/08/2012 11:47

i did try and make eye contact, but he was too busy putting his card on the counter, getting his keys out etc.

I shall practice a very loud "Excuse me!" for the next time!

Can't stand people invading my personal space.
What gets my goat is when you're in a queue and you can feel the person behind you practically breathing into the back of your head.....so you move forward slightly then they move forward too...aarrgghhhhhhhhh

squeakytoy · 12/08/2012 11:47

YANBU at all. I absolutely hate people invading my private space like this at tills.

My MIL, who I do love dearly, drives me mad when we go shopping as she will say "move up, move up", because she is trying to make room for the next person to start putting their shopping on the belt, while I say "no, they can wait, let this person in front finish first!"

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/08/2012 11:49

I don't like this. My mum had her purse stolen by someone doing this and although I would think 99% of people are just being unthinkingly rude, people crowding up to you when you're handling money is not good.

pantaloons · 12/08/2012 11:50

I had this the other day whilst waiting for a cashier in an m&s queue. The guy just kept getting closer, I tried my usual tactic of keeping the foot nearest him in the same place whilst leaning on the other leg and kind of away from him, and he moved closer still. It bugs the life out of me, he was close enough to feel his breath and I had to supress a shudder.

EMS23 · 12/08/2012 11:51

I hate it too! Especially in a queue when the person behind stands so close it keeps banging your bag. I always swing round to look into the middle distance behind their shoulder, thus hitting them with the bag. Normally works!

Passmethecrisps · 12/08/2012 11:52

Total pet hate. Why do people think that breathing down your neck will make you go faster?

I once had a woman lean right over me while I was entering my pin so she could get carrier bags. Carrier bags for the items she would not e abl to pack until I paid and moved on. I stopped entering my pin and stood right back watching her. When she had finished I continue to stand back for a wee bit longer. The till person was great as well at taking her time rolling up my receipt etc and making mrs impatient wait a few more vital seconds

TheMysteryCat · 12/08/2012 11:53

salmotutta completely agree about elderly people. it's awful when you see them flustered, because they are being rushed. some people are more likely to make mistakes and take longer if they are pressured so much.

lrd yes, I've been pickpocketed before by someone, so i'm extra-aware I suppose, but i agree that most people who do this are just being rude.

squeakytoy · 12/08/2012 11:53

I hate it when the person keeps pushing their trolley forwards into you too. I have been known to push it back at them. I hate being rushed!

I live in London, so am used to the crush on the underground and on buses, but shops and supermarkets do not warrant being in such close proximity to anyone else.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/08/2012 11:57

Why do people do it with the elderly, too? I hate people who dither unnecessarily because they can't be arsed, but some people you can see they are slow for a reason, eg., they are elderly. I was in the shop the other day and the women in front of me was insisting on throwing things into bags for the old woman who was being served until the cashier very tactfully said another till was opening up.

Btw, have you noticed how annoyed some people get if you're in a really slow, long queue, like at the post office, and they can see each person in the queue shuffle forward half a pace, and you choose not to move forward into the 35cm of free floor space? It's bizarre - it makes no different in the end to how soon you get there!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 12/08/2012 11:58

I posted that oddly out of sych somehow, sorry. Confused

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/08/2012 11:58

Step on their foot. Or swing around fast and catch them with your bag.

DublinMammy · 12/08/2012 12:01

Deeply irritating. I just turn around and say "Excuse me, could you give me some space please, you are crowding me." Most of the time they don't realise they are invading your space and keep back once asked. If that doesn't work I simply squeeze past my own trolley and keep it rammed back on top of them. Mouthbreathers.

Nancy66 · 12/08/2012 12:01

yeah - but equally I hate faffers.

I get really frustrated when people don't start unpacking as soon as there's room on the conveyor belt. I also get pissed off when they don't start packing for ages.....and when they don't put a 'next customer' bar up on the conveyor belt when they can easily reach one and you can't.

I am a very angry shopper.

Salmotrutta · 12/08/2012 12:02

Someone was pushing forward when my MIL was going through the checkout (we take her to get heavy items) and she gave him her death stare and muttered loudly about not being allowed to gather her stuff up. Grin

Birdsgottafly · 12/08/2012 12:03

I can remember being on a week long restraining course and for a few days afterwards not having any sense of personal space.

I was shopping with my eldest, who in the end asked me if i was sex starved or something Blush

Salmotrutta · 12/08/2012 12:04

But if you step on their foot MrsTerry they may then become a snarly/growly person with aggressive body language ... Wink

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/08/2012 12:04

I also equally hate faffers. Particularly those people for whom paying comes as a surprise. Unless Tesco always give you your groceries free have your purse out to pay.
