I was in tesco today and there is a new energy drink on sale made by mike Tyson and I was really shocked that firstly it was in sale in tesco and secondly that anyone would want to drink something made by a rapist. It made me wonder how low tesco will go. What next shipman shrimps.

Or aibu because the man was convicted and served his time so therefore deserves a second chance.

Am half way through a complain to tesco, but then I started to wonder. What do you think.

Yuk! I dont know what else to say...

0lympia · 11/08/2012 21:36

I've never forgotten that newstory and I wouldn't buy it. Yes he's done a stretch in the clink but you know tiger woods lost some of his sponsorship deals (i think?) for extra marital consensual sex, so why should a convicted rapist be endorsing drinks? It does seem very disrespectful imo. Do some men think that the woman just cried rape and poor mike tyson went to jail because some fame hound cried rape.

Ime, young people buy those energy drinks and may not remember that he raped somebody, but would they know who he was?

Birdsgottafly · 11/08/2012 21:37

I would like to think that some men are products of their environment and the company that they then keep.

The whole 'gangster' scene, shows women as bitches, who need keeping in line.

I have mixed feelings about this, tbh.

I think given his background and MH problems, i would like him to have a second chance.

BrianCoxIsUpTheDuff · 11/08/2012 21:37

Tyson is an appalling excuse for a human being.

I would call him an animal but I like animals.

Complain to Tesco, not sure what it will do unless lots of people complain?

Which brand is it (without wanting to advertise it of course, but would like to know so I can avoid)

SirBoobAlot · 11/08/2012 21:38

I'd complain to the company who make it, Tesco are simply stocking the product. But yes, very bad taste.

BrianCoxIsUpTheDuff · 11/08/2012 21:39

*I don't know about his MH problems or his background.

My opinion of him is based on the reported stories of his criminal activity.

griphook · 11/08/2012 21:40

From what I could see it was his own brand.

Tesco won't give a shiny shit but it might make me feel like I did something

had no idea he was a convicted rapist tbh.

Yup, I'd agree that tesco (or any other company of that matter) probably shouldn't be stocking this .

There are plenty of better role models out there.

(disclaimer : no-one should be "hounded" if they have served their time, but to actively seek PR work/promote products/be a role model afterwards is a bit much)

JumpingThroughHoops · 11/08/2012 21:40

I get the same heebie jeebies by that skank from Red Dwarf who was then In Corrie - Craig Charles.

shudder

Lots of people watched East Enders and Leslie Grantham is a convicted and time served killer.

CommaChameleon · 11/08/2012 21:40

Complain to both companies.

SpagBoltTheFastestManOnEarth · 11/08/2012 21:44

Craig Charles was acquitted

GhostShip · 11/08/2012 21:46

A lot of people probably don't know. Especially the generation that this is market at. I didn't know anyway!

JumpingThroughHoops · 11/08/2012 21:46

Still gives me the heebie jeebies. And he has drug convictions.

Skank

FastidiaBlueberry · 11/08/2012 21:47

No YANBU

Not rolling out the red carpet for someone isn't the same as hounding them.

A convicted rapist is, not a good role model.

McHappyPants2012 · 11/08/2012 21:47

Yabu. He committed an awful crime in 1992 it's now 10 years later. Should he never be able to earn money or have another job.

MrsBonkers · 11/08/2012 21:48

Really? I work for Tesco and don't know the brand.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/08/2012 21:48

Many years ago, my grandfather used to tell me that Frank Sinatra was Mafia and paid to have people killed.
Don't know if this is true, he had very strange ideas about things.

But lots of people bought Frank Sinatras records Hmm

TheCrackFox · 11/08/2012 21:49

If Tyson had been convicted of raping a man you can bet your bottom dollar that he wouldn't be endorsing anything.

FastidiaBlueberry · 11/08/2012 21:49

Over 90% of rapists are aquitted
Just sayin'

lottiegarbanzo · 11/08/2012 21:50

Yes, yuck. I lost all respect for the labour govt when, quite early on, they let Tyson into the UK to fight, as there was lots of money to be made by the British promoters. Thus conveying that money was more important than women's safety.

We are not the target market though. Consider how many scary dogs are called Tyson. There are plenty of would-be tough guys who revere Tyson as a boxer, hard-nut and unfortunately, a rape conviction doesn't detract much from that.

For those who don't remember, there was no doubt about the case. She was a young beauty contestant or model, very petite, he threw her around the room and later admitted he enjoyed hurting women when he had sex with them.

griphook · 11/08/2012 21:50

Really? I work for Tesco and don't know the brand.

It was in an express tesco, seems to be a polish company

In all fairness he's obviously still popular with people because he's in The Hangover.

They just seen a selling point and exploited it.

No one's saying he shd never be allowed to work again.

He just shouldn't be allowed to do certain types of works. Like rape counselling or anything where he can be presented as a good role model, for example.
