to think that animals shouldn't wear clothes?

It's a bit fucked up really isn't it? What kind of person thinks it's a good idea to take an animal that has evolved quite happily to not need clothes and dress them up? Plus it really creeps me out!

Dogs don't need clothes!

Cats don't need clothes!

Horses don't like fancy dress!

he wants to know what he did to deserve this

A human wouldn't suffer if I laughed behind their back either, that doesn't mean I do it.

mercury7 · 09/08/2012 16:56

the human may suffer if it knew but the dog has no capacity to feel embarassment

Naysa · 09/08/2012 16:56

"That has evolved quite happily"
No.
Most animal breeds of today have been selectively bred so have been forced to "evolve" into what they are today.
Some horses find it hard to keep weight on in English winters therefore they need to be rugged.
Greyhounds are slim, thin skinned dogs and need all the protection they can get.
Surely you believe the same applies to humans..?

mercury7 · 09/08/2012 16:57

very true, dogs in particular are very much human creations!

yellowraincoat · 09/08/2012 16:58

It's not about the dog's feelings so much as having a level of respect for it that doesn't involve laughing at it.

I could call it an utter cunt all day long as well, but I don't.

squoosh · 09/08/2012 17:00

YABU.

My parents dog wears a jumper to bed in the winter. He loves it.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 09/08/2012 17:02

I really hate people putting dogs in clothes. And no, I don't mean greyhounds in proper dog blankets in winter, I mean fucking T-shirts and things.

Humiliating and plain weird.

Scuttlebutter · 09/08/2012 17:04

Greyhound owner here. As Naysa says, our dogs need to wear coats in the winter.

Many horses wear a variety of rugs for different purposes - keeping warm, preventing fly strike, preventing sweet itch etc.

Friend of mine is a professional medieval reenactor - her horses wear magnificent costumes which are carefully researched and complement the armour worn by the "knights" - nothing disrespectful at all about it.

yellowraincoat · 09/08/2012 17:04

Oh come on, there is a massive difference between a warm coat for a dog without thick fur and a fucking star wars costume.

Kladdkaka · 09/08/2012 17:08

My dog would die of hypothermia if he didn't wear clothes.

YABU :(

yellowraincoat · 09/08/2012 17:10

Kladdkaka, as above, there is a difference between dressing your dog up for a laugh and putting something on them so they don't get cold.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 09/08/2012 17:12

I think the word 'clothes' is being misunderstood a bit; whether deliberately or not, I don't know. yellowraincoat pretty much nails it, above.

OP, that dog in the princess dress makes me twitch/cringe in embarrassment/want to scream/want to cry all at the same time. It's an all-round fucking nightmare of dreadful feelings.

freddiefrog · 09/08/2012 17:12

Well, my big strapping springer spaniel is currently mincing around in a pink tutu that my DD2 has dressed him in so I'm not sure I have an opinion, lol

Kladdkaka · 09/08/2012 17:12

My dogs also wore fairy wings to my wedding (pic on profile), but they were my bridesmaids. Blush

puds11 · 09/08/2012 17:13

I give up!

freddiefrog · 09/08/2012 17:14

Oh, and if he was bothered, he would take it off.

mercury7 · 09/08/2012 17:15

I find it distasteful, but I cant see that it hurts the animal.

You could argue that willingness to make animals look silly to humans is the 'thin end of the wedge'
ie that it might lead us to regard them with a lack of compassion and treat them in ways that do cause them actual harm?

However, I'm not sure thats a very sound argument.
I imagine people dress pets up because they identify with them see them as almost human...thats probably going to make them treat them with more compassion?

tak1ngchances · 09/08/2012 17:17

Best picture I ever saw in my LIFE was of a gent walking 3 geese wearing tuxedos. It was in Hello! and I read it on a long-haul flight and had a v concerned flight attendant ask me if I was ok. Tears streaming down my face at it. Can't find it now despite several google-searches!

FoofHundredMetreFreestyle · 09/08/2012 17:18

It makes them look foolish.
Do they feel foolish? who knows.

I agree with Yellowraincoat.

yellowraincoat · 09/08/2012 17:21

Dogs can definitely feel shame. Who knows whether they feel shame to the extent that being laughed at would bother them.

mercury7 · 09/08/2012 17:23

yellow, how are you privy to the interior life of a dog??
perhaps you also know what it feels like to be a bat Confused

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 09/08/2012 17:26

Our hairless dogs have clothes depending on the weather.
In winter they have woolies for warmth, in the really hot weather they have loose tops [usually baby t shirts from charity shops] to keep the sun off their skin.

They go naked in mild weather when they aren't in danger of freezing or getting sunburned.

They wear suncream and are moisterised too.
