I don't know, maybe others haven't experienced this, but during the many conversations that everyone is having about the olympics, I hear lots of people admit they're not massively into sport, quite like the fact we're doing well in the olympics, but are really looking forward to watching the paralympics. Usually followed by some kind of statement like 'that's where the real heroes are'.

Why would you watch the paralympics if you're not into sport? You aren't interested in competition of nations, you're even less likely to know the rules etc, which are often tweaked or entirely new, you have no appreciation for physical brilliance, you might just have a smidgen of patriotism. So frankly the only reason you are watching is to goggle at the disabilities as if it's some kind of freak show.

They are elite athletes who train as hard as the 'real' ones. Don't start telling me that this is inclusive sport for all abilities. No, these are the most talented physically disabled athletes. There are many non-talented, disabled people too who are as shite at sport as me. Shall we go and watch them overcome their obstacles just for the hell of it, because I'm certain that some people have to put as much effort into getting out of bed and functioning (if that) everyday, as a paralympic athlete who trains to their limits just as an able-bodied athlete does.

Please, if you're going to support these athletes, then treat them as serious sportsmen and women. If you're not into sport then it's not for you.

I have never watched the olympics before and nor am I "into" sport per se, but have been riveted to the screen this time round - loved every minute of it and have spent many hours watching events in the veladrome even though I didn't have the slightest idea of how it was scored or pointed or even who was winning at one point (omnion?? wtf is that all about?)

I shall be watching the olympics till then end - and that includes the para's.

I am totally in awe of all the sports persons taking part regardless of how they physically do it!

pouffepants · 08/08/2012 22:19

why do they need awareness raised?

If it was part of the main olympics we would all fall across it in the same way as you find yourself hooked on tabletennis or canoeing or something. And then maybe people will consider them equal elite athletes.

And I don't particularly like basketball but I watch the one for disabled people because my friends husband plays. I don't need people like you being judgey and questioning why I want to watch something.

MorrisZapp · 08/08/2012 22:21

I'm sure you mean well but this comes across as bonkers.

Yabu.

Scarredbutnotbroken · 08/08/2012 22:22

Whaaaaat - real
Heroes? If like to meet these claimants. So some sport is more worthy than others? Oh god I hate worthiness its do saccharine .
Didn't Chris hoy have a bike bought for him by a load of kids back in the day? Is that not worthy?

I take issue at the word hero in most contexts except the RNLI.

pouffepants · 08/08/2012 22:23

Lots of people seem to have missed my point that my criticism is only aimed at those that specifically watch JUST the paralympics. All of you that quite enjoy everything, I think that's fab, and it's great that so many people watch it on a par with the olympics, regardless of whether you are sporty.

OP posts:
Scarredbutnotbroken · 08/08/2012 22:23

Im not watching either games - yet I don't resent the enjoyment of others Grin

I can't see anything in that to intimate they are not serious sportsmen and women. I am not interested in sport and yet am caught up with the Olympics-I don't understand why I can't get caught up in the paralympics too. Confused

I specifically watch JUST the paralympics. I find your incorrect judgment of me and what interests me and your thinking you know my motivations better than I do patronising

yabu
I have said similar
maybe cos I live in the sn world, so know what it is really like,
as for calling it a freak show in the op!!

Sirzy · 08/08/2012 22:26

But perhaps people just want to watch the paralymipcs that is their choice and you are trying to make that into a negative thing.

LadyBeagleEyes · 08/08/2012 22:27

I love the Olympics, always have, always will.
It's about ordinary people doing what they've trained to do all their lives just for a medal for their country.
The Paralympics are exactly the same.
I don't quite get what you're getting at OP?
Would you prefer no one watched the Paralympics at all just in case they are being patronising?

pouffepants · 08/08/2012 22:28

I have a problem with them being hailed as heroes because although they have disabilities, which most of us will never have to deal with, they are the very luckiest of the disabled population in that they are also very talented.

The people that really have to overcome obstacles are the unseen residents of nursing homes, and the people with disabilities all over the world with no equipment to help them, and the one's with families having to sacrifice everything to attempt even the smallest quality of life. Someone fighting ME will be using every ounce of energy to function.

So to hail them for overcoming their disability doesn't seem right, they should be celebrated as equal sportspeople.

Op - I totally get you - just don't think I can explain any better either.

Kladdkaka · 08/08/2012 22:30

No, she's saying that only people with a general interest in sport should watch because people who are only interested in sport for those with disabilities aren't genuinely interested, they just want to watch the freaks. Angry

GhostShip · 08/08/2012 22:31

Some of them are Hero's actually. Ie, got limbs blown off whilst in the army.

Sirzy · 08/08/2012 22:31

But they aren't equal sports people however you try to word it they aren't. They have had different hurdles to over come along the way.

Using your analogies though we should never celebrate anything positive because there are people struggling.

LadyBeagleEyes · 08/08/2012 22:31

Eh?
I still don't get your point Op, sorry.

pouffepants · 08/08/2012 22:32

Exoticfruits, I'll say again, if you enjoy the olympics and the paralympics then you obviously have a similar appreciaton for both, which is not what I'm talking about.

I'm talking about people watching the paralympics when they have no interest in sport or the olympics.

I accept that if you have connections to disability groups then you may have a specific interest.

Absolute, unadulterated, bigotted, disablist, codswallop.
