To think Becoming Green should rename their business

Becoming more profitable by replacing employees with prisoners?

This bunch of cunts have deleted and blocked me from their Arsebook page. Merely for asking the same question I ask here.

So, wise people of MN, is it right that they recruit cheap labour then sack perfectly good workers?

send me a link to their page and i'll repost it Wink

So prisoners cannot do any training/work experience, come out unemployable and commit more crime?

ilovesooty · 09/08/2012 00:19

If they employ prisoners they should be paid the going rate and given the money on release. Current workers shouldn't be sacked to make way for cheap labour, which is what is happening.

CommaChameleon · 09/08/2012 00:23

youngermother that clearly isn't what the OP said or what she means.

BadDayAtTheOrifice · 09/08/2012 00:28

No they should not change their name, I want to know who to stay away from.
Removing jobs from the 'legitamate' workforce to replace it with slave labour is disgraceful.

NarkedRaspberry · 09/08/2012 08:49

Have you read about this YoungerMother? Here.

They have brought in prisoners to work full time in their call centre for £3 a day for 2 months ie they have had 7.5 hours a day for 9 weeks of labour for 40 pence an hour! They have sacked staff, unsurprisingly, because who wants to pay minimum wage when you can get prisoners at that rate!

'A former manager at Becoming Green claimed the company had been creating "reasons to ? justify dismissing people from the company so they could get more prison staff in".

"The whole idea of what the company is doing is bringing in free labour for the business and relieving their employed staff of their responsibilities, because obviously it is more cost-effective for the business to have criminals working for them than paying a salary to each person.'

youngermother1 · 11/08/2012 15:07

That is the bias in the article. Anyone could write this as local firm helps train prisoners to enable them to get jobs when they are released to prevent a relapse into crime.

NarkedRaspberry · 11/08/2012 15:12

At the expense of paid jobs? Where exactly are these prisoners going to get paid work when they are released? Not at that company. Why would they pay someone minimum wage when they can get staff for 40p an hour.

ChocolateHips · 11/08/2012 15:14

I'm all for prisoners working f/t in prison, but not at the expense of others jobs. Though the company is taking a massive risk empolying prisoners, but given the economy it is the most practical thing to do. I guess I'm on the fence.

confusedpixie · 11/08/2012 15:37

I'm another who's all for training prisoners, but not at the expense of paid jobs for the bog standard joe who hasn't committed a crime. Firing people just makes it worse imo.

NicholasTeakozy · 11/08/2012 16:41

I have a nasty feeling that over the next couple of years we are going to see progressively fewer NMW jobs due to schemes like this and the full rollout of the 'Workfare' programme. Why would any company actually pay their workforce a pittance when they can get them paid for by the taxpayer?

OP posts:
youngermother1 · 11/08/2012 22:34

Any job done by a prisoner is a job not done by someone else, whether in prison or not. At least this is in a proper company rather than a govt scheme which do not have great reputations.
Employers pay good money for good staff. Good successful companies know how important employees and goodwill is, they realise that cheapest does not mean most profitable

carernotasaint · 11/08/2012 22:50

I saw on another thread that you are only going to get carers allowance if the person you are caring for is on HRC DLA. Other carers are apparently going to be "helped back to work" Bet i can guess how!
