The horror. THE HORROR!

iggi777 · 06/08/2012 22:58

I have a vegetarian toddler and anyone involved in his care knows this - he never gets offered anything that they think to be meat (eg sausages) but very few people think to check for gelatine. I know he's had haribo at parties, for example. While I won't deliberately give him anything with gelatine in it, I accept he will sometimes end up having it. It is hard for someone who eats meat to get their head round things like gelatine and shellac - more so the diet of a vegan I'm quite sure.

If it was religious I would still thinkt he same - a genuine mistake on part of the hostess is not worth losing friendship over?

YAB a bit U. If you don't eat an exclusive diet - of whatever variety - your often don't have a clue what food contains proscribed items other than the obvious. Eg I don't eat pork and a massive number of sweets contain pork gelatine. People often don't think about it. They remember not to serve me sausages but still offer sweets (which I politely decline). I really doubt she would have done it on purpose and, if she realises, she will probably feel guilty. Take a deep breath, remember she is your friend and is not being malicious.

Sassybeast · 06/08/2012 22:58

How old is the child OP ?

ohmysilverballs · 06/08/2012 22:59

really?????

TheDoctrineOfEnnis · 06/08/2012 22:59

Same deal, Medals - if it was a genuine mistake, which I suspect it was, it would be reasonable to point out that gelatine contained animal products and so could they avoid [list of common foods in which gelatine might not be obvious such as Haribo] from now on.

iggi777 · 06/08/2012 23:00

"Nobody would be dead" - well, except for the cow or pig who provided the gelatine, which presumably matters to the OP!

NorksAreMessy · 06/08/2012 23:00

Will nobody think of the children?!?!?

Viviennemary · 06/08/2012 23:00

You think. Wouldn't it be better if you contacted them and found out if they did? Maybe they didn't.

SDTGisAnOlympicWolefGenius · 06/08/2012 23:02

Well - I would still say that accidents can happen, Medals, and if you aren't living day in, day out with the particular do's and don'ts of a particular diet, be it medical, religious or preference, then it is not easy to know all the details - so you wouldn't feed bacon sandwiches to someone Kosher, but you might slip up over an ingredient in a dish that you didn't know was derived from pork.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 06/08/2012 23:02

Norks Grin ROFL you need your own show Grin. Hilarious!

"we" are vegan - tell me OP, did your dc take the decision.of veganism on themselves or did you make that decision for them?

yetanothernamechnager · 06/08/2012 23:04

Obviously I made the decision for my child

MedalsTrumpDiamonds · 06/08/2012 23:04

Ennis (great name btw) madge and others - yes I take your point and agree, definitely nit worth losing a friendship over if it was done in error!

Rubirosa · 06/08/2012 23:04

What difference does being kosher or halal make? A mistake is a mistake.

hermionestranger · 06/08/2012 23:04

Rearrange this well known phrase.

Over. Get. Yourself.

MedalsTrumpDiamonds · 06/08/2012 23:04

*not

Lucyellensmum99 · 06/08/2012 23:05

oh FFS!!!

MedalsTrumpDiamonds · 06/08/2012 23:06

SDTG you're right, I wouldn't have known about the gelatine thing before I worked in a school.

SDTGisAnOlympicWolefGenius · 06/08/2012 23:06

Well, Gnocchi - when my children were 9, they were meat-eaters, which was the diet I chose for them. And surely that is true for the vast majority of 9-year-olds - their parents choose their diet??

FelicitywasSarca · 06/08/2012 23:06

Nine? Nine?

Could have said no, or asked if about it themselves if they were bothered then? probably wanted the sweets though

Not worth losing sleep over this one!
