do women having periods make them less capable

OP posts:
MrsMangoBiscuit · 07/08/2012 09:36

Yes it's a stupid, sexist opinion to hold, but ffs, calling someone's 19yo son a twat, a dick etc because they professed one stupid comment is completely out of order. Are you telling me you never came out with stupid opinions in your teens?

OP, when I hear someone come out with that sort of crap I usually point out that women cycle roughly every 28 days, but men seem to cycle every 28 minutes!

Yes some women have bad mood swings with PMT, but that would only effect them professionally if they were unable to make rational decisions instead of emotional ones. There are both men and women guilty of this, who should not really be in positions of power, but PMT is irrelevant.

limitedperiodonly · 07/08/2012 09:45

He is a dick mrsmango

When I was 19 I was at journalism college and we discussing different newspapers' approach to news and news/entertainment.

A dick in my class said that all women secretly wanted to be on Page 3. He was surrounded by young women who definitely didn't and regularly performed better than him at what would be our chosen career.

What age does someone have to be before they stop believing crap like that? It would be nice if they were brought up not to believe it in the first place.

HaggisMcNeeps · 07/08/2012 09:47

I'd be gutted if my DS grew up and thought like that.

doublevodkaandcoke · 07/08/2012 09:55

OP, are you absoultely sure that your DS is not being tongue in cheek/playing devil's advocate?

BlueBirdsNest · 07/08/2012 10:05

very true lastnerve I think many women are guilty of using hormones and periods as a 'get out of jail free card' and when we do , is it any wonder , young males and older males think we are a bit 'unbalanced'

OP posts:
VolAuVent · 07/08/2012 10:05

What FastidiaBlueberry said.

BlueBirdsNest · 07/08/2012 10:11

I think he is being tongue in cheek about 'The Button'

OP posts:
limitedperiodonly · 07/08/2012 10:15

bluebirds I don't use my hormones as a 'get out of jail free card' but from what you say, you do.

So who is responsible for your son's idea that every female is 'unbalanced'?

icecold · 07/08/2012 10:19

I am interested in what you mean when you say you have brought him up to be accepting?

how does this statement relate to his views of women?
you've brought him up to be accepting of women????? Confused

what kind of man is his dad?

really worrying that his female friends think this of themselves
did you put them straight?

is this a wind up?

icecold · 07/08/2012 10:21

very true lastnerve I think many women are guilty of using hormones and periods as a 'get out of jail free card' and when we do , is it any wonder , young males and older males think we are a bit 'unbalanced'

RUBBISH...there is a huge gulf between 'being a bit grumpy' and not being capable of rational decision/ holding a position of responsibility/influence

I know you think this is a fun thread. If he were MY son, I would actually be REALLY worried about this statement...

ethelb · 07/08/2012 10:24

When I was 19 I was of the opinion that silly sexist 19 year olds should just be ignored. He'll be flattened for those views soon enough.

BlueBirdsNest · 07/08/2012 10:37

no not a wind up .

This is what he thinks.......or tells me he thinks.

And some of his female friends think the same!

This is not my view , this is one him and friends have come to on their own as 'young adults'

OP posts:
VolAuVent · 07/08/2012 10:45

So can he reliably identify women who have PMT and those who don't? Nope, didn't think so.

MrsMangoBiscuit · 07/08/2012 10:45

limitedperiodonly, one foolish, sexist comment makes someone a dick? wow...

Emandlu · 07/08/2012 10:47

I know that for 1 day each month I get extremely foggy headed and would hate to think I had responsibility for a country when on that day it is all I can do to make dinner.

However, this just means that I think I should not be in a position of power, I'm quite certain other women would be more than capable of doing so. I also think that men haven't done the best job either.

icecold · 07/08/2012 10:58

are you able to answer my other questions bluebird\?

WhereYouLeftIt · 07/08/2012 10:59

"I have brought him up to be 'accepting' "

OP, several posters besides myself have asked you what you mean by this and you have yet to answer. What do you mean by this?

GetOrfMoiRing · 07/08/2012 11:04

Yes, one foolish and sexist comment like this does make someone a dick imo.

He is 19. An adult. He is not a child. And yes he is a tosser.

I would like him to say such things to my 16 year old dd. She would make mincemeat of him.

HecateHarshPants · 07/08/2012 11:08

If women were in charge, there would probably not BE a bloody button!

He is an idiot. I know he's your son and you love him, but he is a sexist fool. I can only hope that as he matures, he becomes less daft.

And I assume that you didn't bring him up to be 'accepting', which is rather patronising and assumes superiority but being oh so tolerant about it, but rather to understand that all people are equal and you don't get to 'accept' anyone.

ratspeaker · 07/08/2012 11:12

The obvious answer is, I'm a woman, I have periods, I am in a position of power in this house. If you dont like it MOVE. Grin

or you now have to do your own washing, cleaning, shopping, ironing, cooking, pay your own bills as I'm not capable!
Oh and learn to accept that views like that will not be popular

Bluestocking · 07/08/2012 11:16

Gosh, yes, he's absolutely right. Look at all the gun crime in the US - almost all of it committed by Ladies On The Rag.

BlueBirdsNest · 07/08/2012 11:16

yeap what questions icecold

OP posts:
limitedperiodonly · 07/08/2012 11:18

limitedperiodonly, one foolish, sexist comment makes someone a dick? wow...

Yes, it does mrsmango. But he could always redeem himself by taking it back. I wonder if his mummy will advise him to.

SonOfAradia · 07/08/2012 11:19

The OP is the 19 yr old DS and is poking you all with a shitty stick.

IMHO.

BlueBirdsNest · 07/08/2012 11:19

by accepting? WhereYouLeftIt maybe acepting wasn't was not the right turn of phrase

I meen a 'Live and let live' outlook on life
