To rarely wash or brush my ds's hair?

louloutheshamed · 06/08/2012 20:06

My 18mo ds, who I posted about last night in the 'beautiful kids' thread, has gorgeous golden bling curly hair. I was in the park with some friends the other day and they were talking about it and one asked, 'is it a nightmare to brush' which I was a bit flummoxed by because I have honestly never brushed it, I just ruffle it with a towel after his bath and when he wakes in the morning it is all curly and golden and adorable.

And then she said 'do you have to use loads of conditioner on it?' and I was even more
flummoxed! I hardly ever wash it, only if he has got food in it or has been doing messy play at nursery. Usually I just rinse it.

Is this mingling? I saw this as someone who washes and dries my own hair every day! But ds's hair just doesn't seem to need it. It is my favourite thing about how he looks but seems to look best when it's just left alone iykwim? Aibu?

I realise this is the second thread I have started about my ds's appearance in two days, I'm really not this shallow In rl!

I was ds's hair twice a week unless he gets food or mud or something in it. I never brush it though he won't let me it doesn't need it for some reason.

BonkeyHasGOLDMollocks · 06/08/2012 20:08

I only brush ds's hair before a wash. Hes 4.

He also has blonde curls or at least did that looked best when its a bit messy.

I like the dragged through the hedge look Wink

EclecticShock · 06/08/2012 20:08

Whatever works for you. I wash ds's hair every other day, no brushing either but it's short.

Lilicat1013 · 06/08/2012 20:11

My son has curls as well and I don't brush them, at least not on a regular basis. It doesn't make any difference to how they look. I do try to comb them occasionally so he gets used to it in case I ever need to treat him for headlice.

He has his hair wash a couple of times a week because he is a very messy child.

WelshMaenad · 06/08/2012 20:11

No, YANBU.

I'm not convinced that lots of 'product' is good for anyone's hair but least of all kids.

My DS is blonde and curly and he gets washed with actual shampoo maybe fortnightly? The rest if the time we just rinse it to keep it fresh. My dd is six and has almost arse length hair, which us washed and conditioned weekly and again, rinsed frequently. Obv she gets brushed daily or we'd have a snarly nightmare.

Their hair is in stunning condition and is oft complimented.

Pascha · 06/08/2012 20:12

DS's gets done twice a week but rarely with shampoo, usually just a continuation of the body wash. He's nearly 23 months and its nowhere near thick enough to warrant a brush.

RaisinDEritrea · 06/08/2012 20:14

I love bling hair, I can picture him perfectly !

Tangle teaser great for knotty curls

I agree that rinsing is fine unless full of food or totes sweaty

MarysBeard · 06/08/2012 20:14

I think once or twice a week is enough washing unless they fall in the mud or something. Try a Tangle Tamer if you must brush it. Changed my life!

MarysBeard · 06/08/2012 20:17

DD2 is 3.5 and still hardly has that much hair. I did buy her a Tangle Tamer though as she wanted a pink hairbrush like her sisters, and I guess at some point the hair will come in abundance!

MonsPubis · 06/08/2012 20:19

When mine were that age, they had it washed lots but never brushed. All of them wild and curly.

ILiveInAPineapple · 06/08/2012 20:58

I must be weird then because I wash and brush my DS's hair every day and have done since we brought him home from the hospital!

janey68 · 06/08/2012 22:01

I've never owned a hair brush - curly hair here too (and both kids) - I didn't think anyone ever brushed curly hair ?

themadfiddler · 06/08/2012 22:21

mostly wash my toddler's hair in water, shampoo very rarely and then i use weleda. brush it- varies. she is curly too and unless knotty i leave it. you are not unreasonable :)

bonzo77 · 06/08/2012 22:33

DS has fairly fine hair, sort of wavy and fairly short. I never brush it. I wash it only if there is visible debris in it. DH however is totally bald and therefore jealous and like to wash, condition, comb and blow dry it!

Springforward · 06/08/2012 22:44

YANBU. DS has short straight hair, and with oilatum in the bath water every night, shampooing a couple of times a week, plus after swimming, seems to be ok. Any more often and it gets dry. There's no point combing his hair, it just goes back to where it was - I rely on the barber doing a good cut TBH.

FutureNannyOgg · 06/08/2012 22:51

DS is about to be 2. I wash his if it looks dirty, otherwise just rinse. I comb it when wet if I remember and there is a comb to hand, otherwise its just toweled.
DH blow dries it for him. I was in stitches this morning watching 6'2" doorman DH with DS in a towel in his lap, with my hairdryer and a brush, carefully drying his hair straight with a side parting. DS is a particularly sweaty child, so the curls spring back at the first nap/car ride/run in the park.

SirBoobAlot · 06/08/2012 22:58

I wash DSs hair a bare minimum because we only have a shower, he hates water in his face (something I'm working on with splashing a lot in paddling pool), and I'm disabled so can't hold him over the sink. If someone else is here to put him to bed I let them Blush Otherwise it gets rubbed with a wet flannel each night, same as the rest of him.

BonnieBumble · 06/08/2012 23:06

I don't brush or wash my children's hair very often either.

I wash my hair once a day and brush it after I have washed it. I don't brush it in between washes. If it has gone all unruly in the day I wash and style it again. I'm crap at doing hair. Sad

Krumbum · 07/08/2012 02:16

Just wondering what the purpose of rinsing it is. All the wetness but it's not clean.

Morloth · 07/08/2012 02:31

Both mine have their hair cut short every few months, no washing or brushing required.

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 07/08/2012 02:42

I wash all my ds, hair included, in oats twice a week. More than enough to make him look and smell fresh and clean. I do use a brush after towel drying because he has an absurd amount of hair for a 6 mo old and it gets knotty if I don't but that's it.

BlackholesAndRevelations · 07/08/2012 06:54

I'm gobsmacked at how many people don't wash or brush their children's hair! My DD has curly hair but it's still shampooed most days (at least every other day) and brushed with tangle tamer. Am I doing her some damage?! I wash my own every day too. I like freshly washed hair.

BlackholesAndRevelations · 07/08/2012 06:55

Makescakes- does that mean you only wash his body twice a week too? That's just gross.

mummytime · 07/08/2012 07:10

I wouldn't wash avert small kids hair every other day, you are stripping out all the natural oils (different to post adolescence grease). However once a kid gets to Nursery or school hair washing becomes more crucial if only to do the weekly nit check.
