To rarely wash or brush my ds's hair?

My 18mo ds, who I posted about last night in the 'beautiful kids' thread, has gorgeous golden bling curly hair. I was in the park with some friends the other day and they were talking about it and one asked, 'is it a nightmare to brush' which I was a bit flummoxed by because I have honestly never brushed it, I just ruffle it with a towel after his bath and when he wakes in the morning it is all curly and golden and adorable.

And then she said 'do you have to use loads of conditioner on it?' and I was even more
flummoxed! I hardly ever wash it, only if he has got food in it or has been doing messy play at nursery. Usually I just rinse it.

Is this mingling? I saw this as someone who washes and dries my own hair every day! But ds's hair just doesn't seem to need it. It is my favourite thing about how he looks but seems to look best when it's just left alone iykwim? Aibu?

I realise this is the second thread I have started about my ds's appearance in two days, I'm really not this shallow In rl!

SonofArcadia This isn't always true. My dd needs to wash her hair - she hadn't washed it for years and it started to get to the point that it really did need washing.
I think it works for some people, but others just have naturally overly greasy hair.

She only does it about once a month now, it's just enough to keep on top of it.

Blackholes - he gets a wipe down with a flannel after every meal and his bum at every change, but we don't have a barth and the shower is too small to get in with him (i couldn't close thr doors at thr end of my pregnancy) so until we move I can only be bothered to fill the baby barth twice a week. It's not gross at all. How stinky does a baby really get?

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 07/08/2012 15:58

Oh ffs. Bath, obviously. The auto correct is stupid, not me

Children's hair really doesn't get dirty and greasy the way that adults' hair does. So once a fortnight is perfectly adequate for hair washing, I always found.

YANBU.

I have washed my sons hair about 10 times in 5 years. Admittedly, he didnt have any for at least a year, and very fine hair for another year. It just never seemed like it needed washing.

When it looks grubby I wash it, but it rarely does.

Mumsnet has truly opened my eyes to the world. Am adult human who hasn't washed his/her hair for eight years?!

I will try and hold off on the washing (dc hair, NOT mine!) and see what happens.

I love it when my babies come out of their bath all fresh, sift skin, smelling lovely. I must admit they have dry skin so we bath every other day but use oilatum (prescribed for DD) and dentinox or infaderm shampoo. I know how lovely it is to get into bed all fresh and clean and want the same for my dc. Plus I want them to be clean and grow up showering daily; my bro didn't shower ever until he was bullied into it; now that IS gross!

Ps LOL at "barth"! Grin

Baby Cakes gets v dry skin, esp since the water here is so hard, that's why I use the oats instead of any kind of soap. They leave him all soft and delicious smelling and his hair looks beautiful, all soft, shiny and fluffy like a little duck.

DesperatelySeekingPomBears · 07/08/2012 21:08

DS has his hair washed during his nightly bath, every single night, and has done since the day we left hospital. I love how soft and fluffy it feels during our nightly cuddles and it smells of baby shampoo, pure bliss.

DozyDuck · 07/08/2012 21:11

I wash DSs hair twice a day at least. But he's a little mucky pup and it's always got food or mud in it

umiaisha · 07/08/2012 21:37

Both DS (16 months) and DD (6) are bathed and have their hair washed daily. I have done this since they were newborn.

Find the bath helps them sleep better and I definitely couldn't get away with not washing DS hair daily as he is such a messy eater.

DS has curly hair and I don't brush it either.

All these children who get food in their hair... Maybe as well as bibs, they need shower caps at meal times?! Wink

OHforDUCKScake · 09/08/2012 09:38

YANBU I rarely wash my childrens hair. Actually, DS1 5yrs gets washed weekly now but only started that recently.

Otherwise, I never understood the need unless the hair has food or something in it. Both my childrens scalps got sore and dry after even water went on them let alone washing it, so it was a benefit to avoid it where possible.
