I really am a farking kill joy arn't I......

13 years ao age - novice teen really - "but mum I just ant to talk to my mates"
me "nope - bed - 3am is really too late"
DS "but mum...all my mates are still up"
me "really!!!!!!....I couldnt give 2 hoots"

Im so wound up now, Im really sick of this stupid conversation - this isnt the first time btw.....He is generally a good kid, but these nocturnal activities are absolutely no good - he will then spend most of the next day in bed!!! what a waste...

DS says "who said daytime is for being awake and night time is for sleeping!!"

me "I did...now go to farking bed!!!!!"

my 13 yr old is the same ,hes still in bed now ,I dont mind as it means everyone else has a peaceful day without him winding them up ;0)
Its only during the holidays , I shall get him back into a proper routine the week after next as he will have to be up at 6 for school

TroublesomeEx · 06/08/2012 16:48

Wow!

I think it's too late if I hear my 13 yo DS pottering around at 10.30pm! There's no way I'd allow/facilitate him being up at 3am.

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 06/08/2012 17:39

My dh often sees his 13 year old half brother logging into xbox as he logs off at about 11pm - on a school night. His parents don't seem to give a shit. Pretty poor IMHO.

I would draw the line at 1ish even in the hols for a child of that age. A 16yo+ can decide for themselves.

WorraLiberty · 06/08/2012 17:54

starmaker7 your 13yr old is still in bed at nearly 4 o'clock in the afternoon?

Please tell me you're not in the UK? Shock

tittytittyhanghang · 06/08/2012 21:18

ds is 12 in September and he is exactly the same, up to god knows what time, as are all his friends. Weekends/holidays i dont mind (unless we have plans the following day in which case its light out at half ten) and its lights out at half 9/10 on school nights.

I must be the meanest mum around then because my ds1 is not allowed play after maybe half 8 at night and is in bed before ten! The only exception generally would be if he had a friend sleep over, then we might allow them play til 11 or 12 max. I personally think its crazy letting younger teens stay up til all hours.

Jillyhere · 06/08/2012 22:40

elah11

How old is ds1?

mumnotmachine · 06/08/2012 22:48

I dont think my DD 13 has been to bed much before 1ish at any point
during the holidays, I shouted at her at 1.45 this morning as she was rolling around on her computer chair on laminate floor and it was bloody loud!!!
She emerges around 11am most mornings

amck5700 · 06/08/2012 22:50

Hmmm - I had my 12 and 11 year olds in bed for quarter to 9 tonight.......but they didn't even complain - put lights out at 9.30 :)

mumnotmachine · 06/08/2012 22:52

Its the first year my DD has done it mind- up till last year she needed at least 10/11 hours sleep a night, she hit puberty and she needs less now

yeah - mine have to be up and out for 8am most days - they need to be up earlier in the holidays than they do for school - but then they get up early at the weekends too - can't remember ever having to wake them up unless it is at 4am for a holiday flight or something.

mumnotmachine · 06/08/2012 22:57

It all depends on what you have to do as well- if kids have to be up and out in the mornings for childcare/holidays clubs etc then they need to be in bed earlier- I'm fortunate to not be working the holidays so therefore have no time schedule in the mornings

DrCoconut · 06/08/2012 23:01

DS1 is 13 and a terror for late X box live too. He wants to watch Ted at the cinema though so will use that to prise him out of bed one day. He was OK last week on holiday. We were x box free and sharing a room and he was asleep by 11 most nights! So they can get themselves out of that routine as well as into it obviously. Last summer holidays he was much younger and not as teenagey. Does anyone else's teen DS need a lot of persuasion to have a shower? Mine acts like soap is poisonous at the moment!

mumnotmachine · 06/08/2012 23:03

Ted is a 15, mine wants to see it as well, but they are asking for id in the cinema by us!!!

amck5700 · 06/08/2012 23:05

wish I wasn't working the holidays Envy I have swapped my usual 8-3 for a mixture of really long days and shorter days to try to keep my childcare bill down a bit and also to take account of the extra drives every day to drop off and pick up :( - They have 8 and a half weeks off this year!!

friendlymum67 · 06/08/2012 23:22

Just told my DS (13 nearly 14!) that x box is going off at 11.30. Only half hr earlier than last night but ...... Having read this thread maybe I shouldn't be so adamant, but I like to feel I am still in charge (sometimes!!) Grin

jeez mary, 13 weeks!!! you in the states or is it private school??

elah11 · 07/08/2012 10:45

jellyhere he will be 14 in Dec. I know I am unusual in not letting him stay up, all his friends are allowed, I just dont think its good for them. He is also an early riser anyway, no matter what time he goes to bed he is up before 8 (usually around half 7) so a few nights of going to bed late and he would be dead on his feet!

amck5700 secondary school here are off from the end of May til the start of Sept, waaaaaaay too long imo!

WorraLiberty · 07/08/2012 10:51

What do the kids who sleep all day do about meals?

I mean presumably if they're getting up at 3 or 4pm, they'll wake up and eat dinner...but what about other meals or do they snack at night?

I think my 13yr old DS would have the shits if he became nocturnal...his stomach couldn't handle it! Grin

Maryz during schoolterm its 9pm :) and thats only since he started secondary last yr, I am in Ireland too.

WorraLiberty · 07/08/2012 11:25

Mine's the same elah, he's 13 and goes to bed at 9.30pm...9pm on a school night.

He's allowed to play Xbox during the holidays/weekends though until 11pm at the latest.

He's happy with that arrangement....for now anyway!
