DS "but mum...all my mates are still up"
me "really!!!!!!....I couldnt give 2 hoots"

Im so wound up now, Im really sick of this stupid conversation - this isnt the first time btw.....He is generally a good kid, but these nocturnal activities are absolutely no good - he will then spend most of the next day in bed!!! what a waste...

Sleeping all day and staying up all night is ace.

You need something a <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.com/imgres?q=wifi+password+chores&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&biw=1221&bih=683&tbm=isch&tbnid=PQGMuuwgm-THfM:&imgrefurl=www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2012/07/sorry-kids-want-todays-wifi-password-do-your-chores/260524/&docid=8erqnb8Emfw8jM&imgurl=cdn.theatlantic.com/static/mt/assets/science/wifikids615.jpeg&w=615&h=432&ei=dJgfUMyMGoaq0QXFnYGgAg&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=127&sig=106507069213224395996&page=1&tbnh=151&tbnw=191&start=0&ndsp=20&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0,i:76&tx=99&ty=33" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Bit like this, but add "go to bed before 11/12/1 to it.

I'm going to have to hide this thread so ds doesn't see it. I told him last night that I wanted his laptop off at 10:30pm no matter what! I'd rather he wasn't in bed all day, we have things to do. He's getting up at 10am at the moment.

LadyBeagleEyes · 06/08/2012 11:18

Ds has just turned 17, but during the holidays he's practically nocturnal and has been for years.
He chat's to his mates till all hours, has a telly in his room and I just leave him to it.
He works hard at school and has long, long days so during the holidays I just let it go.
It's no skin of my nose, and if he has to get up for something he will. At the moment he's doing a weeks work experience miles away and staying with my sister, he knows he has to get up for that, but when he comes home I'm sure he'll be sleeping all day again Grin.
They're back at school here in Scotland on 15th August.
Just let them chill, they're teens after all.

JumpingThroughHoops · 06/08/2012 11:24

I dread to think why my 16yo is up to. He seems to have got himself a job writing for a turf accountant and analysing footballers - all on line. I'm sure they haven't a clue how old he is but the boy is a walking statistician and mine of sports trivia. This also seems to involve surfing betting patterns in the far East Hmm And he's trending on Twitter, picking up 1,000 followers a day.

Oh well.

GreenGoldSilverAndBronzeShadow · 06/08/2012 11:25

17 is very different to 13.
I have one of both ages and yes, 17 yr old does stay up to goodness know when, but 13 yr old is expected to be finishing online by 10pm and in bed by 10.30. Different if he has a sleepover, but otherwise I think 10.30 is quite late enough.

Guiltypleasures001 · 06/08/2012 11:32

DP and I was woken with a deep booming voice at 5.30 this morning, Dp said he's on the play station, I said hmm no sounds like it's down stairs?

shouted over the bannister "son of GP who the hell are you talking too do you know what the time is? Oh hi I get just talking to name of cousin on Skype who is in Chicago at the moment on holiday. They are six hours behind, I went in the spare room and turned the wifi off, he went to bed and is still there ffs.

His Nan as per phones this morning to demand to know what we are doing as she still thinks he is a little boy who needs days out when he is in fact 13 nudging 6ft and sounds like Barry fecking White.

No Ice Age 4 today then, I do expect the usual 12.05 shout for lunch though Hmm

We don't have an xbox or a playstation, Harlot.

DS has been given an enormous amount of work to complete before he starts A2 in September.

I don't set bedtimes for teenagers during holidays, unless we have something specific planned for the next day. I was always nocturnal as well and tend to have a late night routine if I'm not working. It's never affected their routine going back to school as teenagers, I used to do the same and somehow always managed to get back into the routine once term started.

NutmegKate · 06/08/2012 12:04

Xbox live is the work of Satan Grin. I have actually given up trying to police my teens over it. If you call up ( DSs 17 and 13 sleep in attic bedrooms ) to turn it off when we go to bed they just wait until we're asleep and put it back on again.

It is the holidays, they will get up if they have to. And, to be truthful, my brother and I used to do stuff like this - without the Xboxes obviously - when we were teens. There are still things we did that my mother doesn't know about.

LadySybildeChocolate · 06/08/2012 12:13

I'd turn the modem off when you go to bed, Nutmeg. Xbox live won't work then.

I have a 14 year old and the rule is no XBox after midnight during the holidays and he has to be in his room after this time. (No screens allowed in bedrooms, but he can stay up and read/draw/whatever.) If he goes past this curfew, he gets up the next day to find I've taken the controllers to work with me.

His older brothers are 17 and they can stay up later but, thank fuck, they have grown out of this late night XBox phase and ironically are usually in bed before him anyway.

NutmegKate · 06/08/2012 12:25

Never thought of that. Blush

Ds rarely has Xbox live. He turned it off early the last time he had a free trial. Confused

Numberlock · 06/08/2012 12:44

It's interesting, isn't it Numberlock

Yes it is Maryz, and it helps me be much more relaxed with my youngest son. I know that it's just a phase that he will (hopefully) also grow out of.

The eldest two (17) also get up now at reasonable times compared with the afternoon rising we had in their early/mid teens.

I feel like I've observed my own social expert in teenagers over the last few years! Grin

GreenGoldSilverAndBronzeShadow · 06/08/2012 13:24

Hmm, my DS1 (just 20) hasn't grown out of the late night phase yet. in fact his Facebook status this morning is something like "don't think ive gone to bed before 6am in over a month" :(
Trouble is, he is doing night shifts 3 nights a week during the University holidays, so finds it easier just to stay up all night permanently....

Enfyshedd · 06/08/2012 13:58

DSS1 (13) didn't go to sleep until 5am one morning last week. Problem is, DD is 11wks so DSS1's sleeping arrangements aren't exactly top priority as long as he isn't keeping anyone else awake, and due to the rearrangement of rooms for DD's arrival, the modem is in DSS1's bedroom, so you'd have to walk in and crawl under his bed to turn it off. Hmm

Mrsjay · 06/08/2012 15:27

I got up for the toilet the other night and saw the flicker of the tv from DDs room It was 3 30 am , I was fuming turning day into night , SO i got her up at 10 am the next day Grin

McHappyPants2012 · 06/08/2012 15:36

love the wifi idea. < puts in note book for future use>

DN 12 is on late at night if it's past midnight i remind him of the time as it is easy to lose yourself in the gaming world.

Mrsjay · 06/08/2012 15:37

I put the wifi off on a school night I didnt even realise she was using it till the lights flashed at 12 30 one night,
