......that make them so superior in performance. It has to be genetic. I am in awe of them as they appear to glide effortlessly around the track. The Jamaican athletes are just wow! Their speed is just amazing.

The hair thing - with braids, afro, shaved, curly: not a problem.

Chemically straightened? Not a problem either, except it takes an age to sort out afterwards. I am Black, I can swim, don't like to wear a swim hat as it makes my hair frizz, so don't go swimming that often. Can't be arsed with the faff of doing my hair afterwards either. That is the only complaint I have had between me and my friends re swimming. I do not speak for all Black people.

Although I do not see racism in this thread, some of the ignorance has made my eyes roll. Almost reminds me of 'they can dance well, can't they'.

Learning to swimming is important on so many levels. For safety, for sport, for fitness and for FUN.

African-Americans are traditionally not swimmers, because they have been "barred" for a long time to share pools with Whites, simple as that plus adding the fact that in most "American Black areas" a pool was not available to them...

Gymnastics is also traditionally a "white sport" as is ice-scating.

All sports, Blacks or Africans would also excel at.

Michael Phelp's university is also my Alma mater....a university which has produced masses of olympic athletes and medal winners, and no, also there at this day and time, Blacks/African-Americans usually do not swim, do not play ice-hockey, do not do figure-skating, or gymnastics, even though that state is ace in ice/snow sport.

The reasons for this have been mentioned a lot here already, mainly the ones which go into the direction of socio-cultural and ethnic/racial socialisation.
