To find the presence of Wills & Kate at EVERY Olympic game annoying?

I'm all for keeping the Royal family as they uphold tradition and rake in the money for us when the tourists come to ohh and ahh over them, but...

Should William, a modern royal who allegedly has a "job" be at every Olympic game going?

Seriously, How many "full time" search and rescue pilots get the privilege of the same amount of time off, let alone a ticket to any Olympic game of choice...

yabu. At their age, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, there may be another Olympics in their own country during the rest of their lifetime, there may not be. Who knows.

Chances are they (well definitely William,) have probably had this time off booked since the day he started his job since it was known the Olympics were coming to London in 2005.

If I could afford tickets/was in the loop for free tickets, I'd be there everyday too!
The media don't HAVE to film them but they do for the PR, believe it or not, every other country love our royal family more than we do.

Fwiw, I'm not a royalist, don't really see the point, hated the jubilee, (am more annoyed about how disinterested queenie was at the opening ceremony) and not really into watching sport either but am glued to the Olympics.

PigeonPie · 04/08/2012 08:40

I don't think the Queen was disinterested at the opening ceremony, I think she was extremely tired as it was very late - I know of people half her age who couldn't stay up for it. Her speech just sounded like she was so tired she could only just string the words together; and tbh I think we should give her some slack - I hope I'm doing as well at over 80!

FWIW I think she looked a lot better the following day on her tour of the site.

FrankelSaysRelax · 04/08/2012 08:50

Let's be honest, most of us were flagging at that point in the ceremony just sitting on the sofa! God knows what it must have been like to sit through it all at her age. It must have been way past her bedtime!

Why is no one moaning about Sebastian Coe or Steve Redgrave? Both are ambassadors and have been at several events.

What is the difference?

Stokes · 04/08/2012 09:37

According to wiki, she's Her Royal Highness Princess William, Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Strathearn, Baroness Carrickfergus.

So she's a princess, a duchess, a countess and a baroness. They all have multiple titles and typically choose one to use in public. Like how Camilla is the Princess of Wales, but doesn't use the title because of the crazy people.

Oops, thread has moved on - that was for Metabilis3.

jamdonut · 04/08/2012 10:48

Prince does not trump Duke, for those asking, but I think it is something to do with making you a landowner? Prince is a title ,but Duke infirs you have an "ancestral seat" e.g York,Cambridge,Edinburgh,Kent Westminster,Lancaster,Northumberland etc. (not quite sure why Prince Edward is an Earl (of Wessex) not sure what the difference is!? So that is why William is now HRH Prince William, The Duke of Cambridge.

By the way, Royals from other countries have been at the events, Like Prince Albert of Monaco and Crown Prince (something) of Denmark, and others whose names I'm not sure of!!

GlassofRose · 04/08/2012 12:33

bedtime - Why thank you for the compliment Grin I am so delightful with my grumpy face. Obviously the medals don't do it for me, I'm soooo busy watching the royals you see Wink

AKMD · 04/08/2012 14:40

YABU, I like seeing them there. They're enthusiastic and excited and it's fun spotting them.

AKMD · 04/08/2012 14:41

...and they're doing their job, which is to be ambassadors and cheerleaders for our country.

AKMD · 04/08/2012 14:42

Carrickfergus? She she definitely use that one! Fergie mark 2.

merrymouse · 04/08/2012 14:48

It's their job.

I think it would be reasonable for you to argue that they could be working a bit harder, waving some pompoms around and doing some routines.

However, arguing that Wills and Kate shouldn't be there is a bit like arguing that we should have a massive sheet over Big Ben for the duration.

JumpingThroughHoops · 04/08/2012 14:49

Royal Duke out ranks a prince, a common old duke doesnt!

One needs to have one Duchy to be a proper duke Wink

The Queen is a Duke, of Lancaster, that is where she gets her personal income from. Cornwall is a gift, from Monarch to the Heir, when Charles dies, it will go to the next monarch to re-gift

KellyElly · 04/08/2012 22:59

Er its the London Olympics held in Great Britain. Why wouldn't they be there? Do you not think the royal family and other high ranking officials attend events when it is held in other countries? Would look a bit strange if the royal family weren't represented at the LONDON olympics!

GlassofRose · 05/08/2012 18:57

To be honest, what pisses me off is not their presence so much, more the silly amount of coverage in newspapers. In fact on some news websites they have been given bigger sections/coverage than actual athletes.

I live in North America and the commentators love it when the cameras show the royals (will and harry during the mens all round gymn was great). Often the camera pans to a random british VIP so when its someone the commentators know they really promote it (the royal family, paul mccartney). i would imagine its the same all round the world.

Also arent the games about "legacy" and the future. The young Royals are the future and attending and winning medals (go Zara) I think complements the whole theme of the olympics.

CelstialNavigation · 05/08/2012 21:07

Considering the amount of performances they will have to sit through in their lifetimes with "fascinated" looks on their faces, its quite nice to see them genuinely excited and enjoying this.
