To find the presence of Wills & Kate at EVERY Olympic game annoying?

I'm all for keeping the Royal family as they uphold tradition and rake in the money for us when the tourists come to ohh and ahh over them, but...

Should William, a modern royal who allegedly has a "job" be at every Olympic game going?

Seriously, How many "full time" search and rescue pilots get the privilege of the same amount of time off, let alone a ticket to any Olympic game of choice...

Well-known faces supporting the Olympics in our own country - whatever next???

rogersmellyonthetelly · 03/08/2012 09:15

I hate to point it out, but for at least 3 of those days his own bloody cousin was competing in the games, if family can't take time off to see loved ones representing their country it's a poor do really.
They have taken annual leave, so what? You know it's really none of our bloody business. Can we all stop with the royal bashing and just get on with enjoying the amazing sport in front of us?

sugarice · 03/08/2012 09:21

If I was royal and rich enough to get to the Olympics I'd be there like a shot and at every event possible.

Metabilis3 · 03/08/2012 09:21

What do you mean 'she's not a princess and she never will be'? She's currently a duchess, but if and when her husband becomes prince of Wales she will be princess of Wales. And then she will be queen.

I don't mind them being there at all.
I am glad that the royal family is represented and would imagine that it is an honour for the competitors.
I can't afford to go to the olympics but I don't begrudge those who can.

mayaswell · 03/08/2012 10:13

I love seeing the famous faces, it must be terrifically boosting for the athletes too.

People having a great time, getting excited, cheering on competitors, brilliant.

geegee888 · 03/08/2012 10:51

I don't find them annoying. There are plenty of people who don't have jobs and lives lives of leisure who do no public service.

Gigondas · 03/08/2012 11:00

Fgs don't watch the Athletics if big shiny Dave makes you annoyed as is there again.

cornflowers · 03/08/2012 11:02

I don't mind what they do and it's probably appropriate for them to be there, but I have to say I find the pair of them pretty insipid. They just don't interest me at all.

Butkin · 03/08/2012 11:10

I love seeing them all supporting Team GB. If you speak to people overseas (which I do every day in my job) they are all incredibly impressed by Britain and the Royal Family and how wonderfully we've organised everything this year. I know there hasn't been a massive increase in tourism during this actual period but the long term PR for our country is immense.

As for David Cameron - I like the fact that our Prime Minister does take some interest in sport and is proud that we hosting the Olympics. If Putin is attending the Judo then it is right and proper that our PM is there as well as host.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 03/08/2012 11:13

They're showing their support aren't they?

Cameron being there all the time the shiny faced wanker is a whole heap more annoying. If any politician is being given freebies it should be Tessa Jowell.

DontmindifIdo · 03/08/2012 11:34

hmm, not sure, I might be missing something i've only seen them at the eventing at the tennis - their cousin won silver at the eventing (quite frankly if a family member I was close too was competing in any Oylmpic event I'd do any old rubbish shifts to be there to see them compete), and isn't Kate supposed to be a big tennis fan? Most people who are big fans of certain Olympic sports have been doing everything possible to get tickets - DH has certainly been hitting 'refresh' every five mins trying to get cycling tickets...

NarkedRaspberry · 03/08/2012 11:46

As Edith said, it's their job.

Head of State is an inherited job here, so those next in line for it are considered acceptable substitutes for the queen at these kind of events.

And as for 'she'll never be a princess'????? It must be so difficult for snobs to accept that she's going to be Queen it almost makes me want to be a royalist!

NarkedRaspberry · 03/08/2012 11:49

Marina Hyde on Cameron and Putin's trip to the Judo.

GlassofRose · 03/08/2012 12:07

alphabite - I'm not being "rediculous". I find it offensive that you would call me that when it is spelt ridiculous...

Anyone would think you were watching will and Kate rather than the games.

Will and Kate screen time: 10-20 secs

Game screen time: 2-3 hours

I'm sure you'll survive.

Emandlu · 03/08/2012 12:16

I was just saying to my DH that in Kate's place I'd be watching as much of the Olympics as I could too. Good for them I say!
At least as VIPs they are using their seats!

limitedperiodonly you have make me almost do a little laughter pee!!!

If I were them I'd go to lots of events too, cheer on the British athletes and have a good time.

Viviennemary · 03/08/2012 12:18

I am not a Royalist. But Kate and William are amongst the least irritating members of the royal family. So I've no objection to them attending.

limitedperiodonly · 03/08/2012 12:19

I digressed there.

I'm not a Royalist and reserve the right to hate them in future - remember how we all used to love that pop-eyed fat freeloader Andrew when he was young and good-looking?

But William's really gone up in my estimation since he married Kate and she has lovely hair. So they can be there if they want.

Bedtime1 · 03/08/2012 13:42

Isn't it funny how Diana had people idolising her. It's sad that a lot of people in this country only idolise people with problems or issues. Kate doesn't appear to have much wrong and she gets abuse. Would you prefer it if she was anorexic or her marriage failing like Diana?

JumpingThroughHoops · 03/08/2012 13:45

If you read the Court Circulars - like I do every morning Blush you'd know they are Official Olympic Ambassadors - you may not like looking at them but there are an awful lot of people round the world who do, and eventually William will be King and as Head of the Commonwealth, he will be the Head of roughly 1/5th of the worlds population.

the rest of us just like oggling Harry

curiousgeorgie · 03/08/2012 14:58

I don't work, and I'm going to five events ;)

DH was at Eton Dorney today, and has taken the whole Olympics off work as holiday instead of going away....

I love seeing them there, makes it feel a bit more special somehow! :)

Mrsjay · 03/08/2012 15:01

I saw in the paper today william laughing and hugging kate looked like they were having a good time, why shouldn't they be there there is tonnes of empty seats least they are using theirs Grin
