Have just heard that during the Olympic opening ceremony, when Sir Tim Berners-Lee was revealed, NBC commentators came out with "Who's he?" and told viewers that they would have to Google him to find out who he was! Which, ironically would have been impossible without his invention, Grin.

Jodie and Joyful I said 'why is Harry Enfield wearing a top hat?' To an entire pub Blush

I had no idea he actually tweeted that live. That is great.

He really was Trills. Or someone was from his Twitter!

Sorry, in my outrage I posted too soon. The bit about Google was intended as a joke, surely? Which makes this thread rather deliciously ironic.

Hahaa DontEatTheVoles - I went to see my Dad (computer journalist and ex-programmer) yesterday and he was getting very annoyed with everyone saying TBL invented the internet...

"This is for everyone #london2012 #oneweb #openingceremony @webfoundation @w3c"

That was the exact Tweet at the exact moment he appeared.

Yeah, I also don't get all the anti-American sentiment on MN. It is hilarious though, all these complaints about Halloween and Baby showers and stuff, like Americans are coming over here with guns in their hands, forcing innocent and unsuspecting Brits to participate in these events

Tee2072 · 30/07/2012 14:03

That's always my argument, Abs. Yes, we are forcing you, at gunpoint, of course, to adopt our ways. ::cue ominous music::

How dare we force you do to fun things that aren't 'of your culture'.

The only Americans I think are stupid are the ones who were sitting behind me at the Globe last night who kept talking loudly about how they didn't know what was going on, and who was that guy anyway, and why was his arm funny, and why were the women characters played by guys. This ALL the way through Richard III. Which is not exactly a complicated play, for God's sake - bad guy kills everyone, apart from the ones he marries, and gets his comeuppance in the end.

(Richard, incidentally, played by wondrous Mark Rylance, who pulled out of playing Kenneth Branagh's part in the opening ceremony because his stepdaughter just died in her twenties. See, it all fits together.)

according to dh (mr geek) he did it using the same model of computer he used for inventing the internet. as it was all wired up and it showed him typing, I'm guessing it was real (and that they had a back up just in case)

I have to admit I yelled DICKENS just before yelling OH HANG ON THAT'S MY KENNETH! which is a bit paffetic given I have been His Biggest* Fan for 20 years Blush

Yeah Tee, stop it. STOP FORCING ME TO EAT REECES PIECES. They're too delicious. And while you're forcing us to do stuff, do you mind importing mini reece's peanut butter cups, and start force feeding me those. Thanks.

Jodie, step aside, I have been KB's biggest fan for aeons. I find the fact he has no lips at all erotically compelling.

Isn't the US the third or fourth most populous nation on earth? So by the law of averages, no doubt quite a large number will indeed be stupid. By the same token, quite a large number will be extremely clever. And all shades in between. Kind of, a bit, like the UK, really. Only different. And bigger.

Peevish me too Grin

I've been known to wax lyrical about them on Facebook, much to everyone's distaste. Have you noticed that he's got trimmer for this series of Wallander, and had a trendily textured haircut Grin

ANYWAY you move aside, I've adored every word he's spoken since he was Henry V in 1989. He can come into my breach any time he likes

I love Mark Rylance. Isn't he american, or half american anyway? I am sure I read somewhere that he was raised in Milwaukee.

I'll try harder, for both of you, on the Reese's front.

Interesting that it seems to be Reese's that are conquering the UK...

It is all a sinister plan.

First, the americans under Clinton introduced widespead peanut allergies in teh UK.

Then they introduced the Nutrageous bar in 2006.

Since then, Reeces pieces, reese's cups backed up by Tootsie Rolls have staged an invasion so quiet and unseeming that it is the best planned takeover of Britain since William of Orange.
