To think that Bell Tents look like throwbacks from my Brownie days?

I know that bell tents seem to be the tent du jour here on mumsnet but I don't get the appeal, why are they better than my Vango? We were away this weekend and saw a couple of bell tents and to be honest they looked like they had been dug out the ark and didn't look nearly as weatherproof as some of the spangly bright coloured ones. DH commented they were the kind of thing he used in Scouts and I agree they remind me very much of Brownie camp (shivers at the damp memory). So come on AIBU to think I'd rather stick with my flashy brightly coloured Vango than tent it up in a bell tent?

But they are waterproof. Yes they are similar to traditional scout tents because they are canvas. Some people like the lighter modern tents with different rooms etc, others like canvas which is durable, less likely to rip and better at keeping a stable temperature in the tent.
