AIBU to think DS age 13 can be as camp as he likes

DS age 13 is, how can I put it, has become very camp since he hit puberty.

He is a brony (a bloke who likes the new 'My Little Pony Friendship is Magic' cartoon), has a fine collection of scatter cushions for his bedroom and he enjoys products from Lush. He also is just very camp in his mannerisms.

I'm not even saying he is gay, because I know straight men who are camp. Although he does keep saying he is bisexual and then saying he was only joking. It wouldn't make any difference to me anyway. I told him that I think love and attraction are genderless and transcend boundaries such as race, gender and physical ability.

The thing is that the father of DS, who is XP is giving me a hard time about it. DP has given DS a ripping for choosing a fragrance from Lush called Lady Boy, so now DS doesn't use it which I don't mind because it is gorgeous, so more Lush for me!.

Other people raise eyebrows when they hear that DS doesn't like rugby, football etc and that I dont - shock horror - force him to do any manly activities! Also, more raised eyebrows when he tells them about how he is a brony etc. DP's family have given me a hard time over this also.

AIBU to think DS can be however the fuck he likes. He is a very interesting, intelligent, thoughtful and charming young man, if a little eccentric. His friends think highly of him. I think he should live the life he wants to live and do what makes him happy.

Dang, Phoolcat's beaten me to it with B.U.C.K and the KYM article! And I registered especially...

OP, your son sounds awesome - it's fab that he's got the confidence to just be himself at that age. If he's not on it already, 'UK of Equestria' arranges local meetups and events, lots of which are fine for younger fans (e.g. under 16s) And while there's absolutely nothing wrong with being camp, my last MLP commission was a leather jacket with one of the characters on the back for a 6'4" USAF aircraft engineer - your ex is very welcome to pop down to Lakenheath to explain his views...

teenagedreams - all the episodes are on Youtube in HD, along with massive amounts of fan works, music vids, affectionate parodies, etc. The first episode's a bit dull as it's mostly setting the scene and introducing the characters, but stick with it!

Astr0naut - the old 80s/90s toys are indeed collectable and you might get a decent price on eBay from collectors or customisers depending on condition, but there's not really much overlap between them and the current fad!

PrincessTeacake · 27/07/2012 18:55

ARGH! Astronaut, if you have them and they're in good condition you could make a little money on them, but doubtful if they'd been chewed on by a toddler. It would make a nice base for a custom pony though, and some of the ladies on the UK Ponycon forums do beautiful works with old broken ponies.

LesleyPumpshaft, here's the link to the website: ponyconvention.proboards.com/index.cgi

So there's that as well as BUCK, I'm only in the UK for Ponycon but a few on the committee will be going to BUCK as well. Both should be great craic, I have a lot of things lined up for Ponycon for noobs and the old guard.

MonsieurReynard, there is a little overlap between the old and the new, it's got a long history in the making. The new series is very much in the spirit of the very first MLP cartoon made, Escape from Midnight Castle. The first episode is practically a remake. All the current ponies are based on the first generation of toys and they're taking it easy on the executive meddling that gave the show such a 'girly crap' reputation in the first place. I did a whole panel about it at a con and successfully got a lot of bronies into the old series but for obvious reasons can't condense the whole thing to fit in here.

Thanks MonsierReynard, I shall have a look now.

lovebunny · 27/07/2012 21:03

lesleypumpshaft, you just keep on as you are. can't do better for a child than give him unconditional love.

MonsieurReynard · 27/07/2012 21:43

Thanks for that info PrincessTeacake - I stand corrected! Smile Am off to watch Escape from Midnight Castle on YT now! Wish I could make Ponycon this year, will definitely be there next year, looks awesome!

I agree with Lady Gaga. I was born this way!
I think one of the greatest gifts we can give our kids is to be proud of who they are. Anyone who doesn't like my (utterly perfect) kids can leave us in peace to enjoy our fabulosity!
Lesley. Thank goodness for mothers like you!
