Hello,

I was on the the bus today and the bus had to stand on the brakes. My buggy fell over with my little one in it and my ipad broke as my bag etc on the buggy fell down too. The screen is broken and i just bought it two weeks ago.

Who covers the repair costs? Sorry for posting in AIBU, but I need a reply quickly.

Erm, you.

You aren't thinking about claiming for it are you?

MrsKeithRichards · 26/07/2012 15:25

You?

OldGreyWiffleTest · 26/07/2012 15:25

Your house insurance?

BBwolefs · 26/07/2012 15:25

I would say you could try and ask The company to pay but i doubt they will and doubt they are obligated to

MrsKeithRichards · 26/07/2012 15:26

And file the receipt under 'shit happens'

JumpingThroughHoops · 26/07/2012 15:26

You or your insurance. You do have insurance don't you?

FredFredGeorge · 26/07/2012 15:26

You do. If you paid for on a credit card, you may be able to make a claim under the credit cards insurance.

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 26/07/2012 15:26

I would take it straight to the nearest Apple store. I know a few who have done it with new iPhones and Apple have just swapped them for nothing. They aren't forced to do it, but always worth a try.

BornToShopForcedToWork · 26/07/2012 15:26

Thanks for the replies. I don't have it covered so can't claim for it anyway.

You. What an odd question. Do you have insurance for possessions outside the home? First thing I did when I got an ipad was include it on my insurance.

NotGeoffVader · 26/07/2012 15:26

Guessing the little one is ok?

Sirzy · 26/07/2012 15:26

Who else would pay for it other than you? What do you expect the bus driver to not bother braking and just drive into other things?

DeepPurple · 26/07/2012 15:26

You. Or your house and contents insurance. You carry valuables with you at your own risk.

StrandedBear · 26/07/2012 15:27

I doubt the company will do anything. It was an accident, rather a broken Ipad than a collision.

RillaBlythe · 26/07/2012 15:27

You do. Do you have contents insurance?

Ithinkitsjustme · 26/07/2012 15:27

I'm assuming that your little one was ok! Be grateful for that.

Sirzy · 26/07/2012 15:27

Also in future I would keep hold of the pram so that it can't fall when the bus stops.

RevoltingChildren · 26/07/2012 15:27

I guess you do. I have personal possessions insurance on my home contents policy which includes accidental damage.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 26/07/2012 15:28

You should pay.

But it's worth taking it to apple, sometimes they are nice and swop it, sometimes they aren't. You can get it fixed a lot cheaper than apple will do it for if they do want to charge you though.

catus · 26/07/2012 15:29

You, obviously!!!!!

Anniegetyourgun · 26/07/2012 15:29

Never mind the sodding iPad, was the baby hurt?

(not a chance on the claiming thing btw, check your household insurance to see if it covers accidental damage outside the home)

glastocat · 26/07/2012 15:30

I also broke my ipad screen a couple of weeks after buying it. I was advised to make an appointment at the genius bar in the apple store, and told the guy what happened and how gutted I was. They replaced it! They don't have to do it, so be extra nice when you ask, but you never know your luck!

BornToShopForcedToWork · 26/07/2012 15:30

Phoned apple who said that they would exchange the old one for a new one and £126.

Presumably if you say the bus "had to" stand on the brakes, you're not suggesting the driver was driving in a negligent way? Technically I guess you could say that if the driver was driving in a negligent manner and it was reasonably foreseeable that it would cause damage to your property, and did in fact do so, that you've got a case against the bus company. But I think most people would say that even if he was driving negligently, rather than - say - trying not to hit a pedestrian, car or cyclist - it's not particularly sensible to leave expensive bits of equipment around to get damaged (what was it doing on your buggy?).

So, as a change from "you" - your home insurance if it covers damage outside the home. If not, I would say? you.

MrsKeithRichards · 26/07/2012 15:31

If you did pursue it wouldn't stand for a minute.

You should be holding buggy.

You shouldn't hang stuff on the back.

Driver braked to avoid collision - assuming it was essential he braked.
