Hello,

I was on the the bus today and the bus had to stand on the brakes. My buggy fell over with my little one in it and my ipad broke as my bag etc on the buggy fell down too. The screen is broken and i just bought it two weeks ago.

Who covers the repair costs? Sorry for posting in AIBU, but I need a reply quickly.

Baby is okay. He is quite protected in the buggy. The ipad is new and did cost me a lot of money so when it breaks and it isn't my fault i think it is my right to ask how I 'get out' the cheapest way possible. It wasn't loose in my bag but in a leather case etc.

Don't phone them. Turn up if it's near enough. Don't suppose you're near Leicester? My DP can fix them if Apple won't.

BornToShopForcedToWork · 26/07/2012 15:34

Wasn't drivers fault but another car driver. Bus driver was very apologetic and helpful as i wasn't the only one who fell with buggy. Another one fell off her seat.

Bloody hell - scenarios like this are why everyone's insurance premiums are through the roof, because they have to spend time and money defending claims of this nature.

OP - pleased you came here for advice first!

BornToShopForcedToWork · 26/07/2012 15:35

Ipad was in my bag hanging on the buggy. Not just on top of the buggy.

I should think the bus company (quite rightly) has a liability notice.

You should have had it in a case, or something more protective than a handbag.

BellaVita · 26/07/2012 15:36

YOU.

StrandedBear · 26/07/2012 15:36

There will be signs on the bus saying 'do not hang bags off the pushchair' Why weren't you holding the buggy too?

RaisinDEtre · 26/07/2012 15:37

Glad little one is ok

Don't hang bags on the buggy, I will bet it had a sticker on to that effect

No house insurance ? Got to be worth a phone call

Liketochat1 · 26/07/2012 15:39

How annoying op! It's not always easy on buses. I was on one this morning with 3 children, including our push chair and shopping. That's how some people have to get around. Even holding onto the push chair they can tip at times.
My iPad has a crack in it. It hasn't bothered me at all. In fact I don't notice it now. Ask at the apple store perhaps. Have you got one of those covers? They protect the screen.

ImperialBlether · 26/07/2012 15:39

OP, did you pay for it with a credit card? You might be covered. Check before you agree to pay anything more.

CaseyShraeger · 26/07/2012 15:40

It's probably just the digitizer glass that's broken, rather than the LCD screen itself - in principle you can fix it yourself for a fair bit less than £126, but it's a bit of a fiddly faff so likely to be easiest to get Apple/someone else local to repair it.

CaseyShraeger · 26/07/2012 15:42

Oh, good point about the credit card short-term insurance.

Tee2072 · 26/07/2012 15:43

Don't call Apple. Go to a an Apple Genius Bar.

They can they assess the actual damage and may be willing to switch it out for a new one.

Oh and if not? You pay for it, of course. Hmm

DeWe · 26/07/2012 15:53

One thing I learnt over years of going on the bus.
Never have bags hanging off the back of the buggy. They tip up very easily going up hills, round corners, normal stopping, and all sorts of other things.
I would always be close enough to grab the buggy, usually I'd hold onto it. The only time one tipped badly was when dd2 decided it was funny to try and lean over as the bus went round a corner on a sharp hill. I went flying with the buggy on top of me. Blush

Hulababy · 26/07/2012 15:56

How frustrating and annoying. I can definitely understand why you feel miffed. I would be too.

But sadly I don't think there is much you can do.

Take it to the Apple store genius bar and have them look at it. This is far better to do than phoning Apple.

If you have home contents insurance you might be able to claim in that, but the excess may make it not worthwhile.

And when it is replaced maybe get a nice think padded case for it.

Have been on a sharply braking bus before. Even holding the pram and having a covered ipad may often not be enough to prevent the pushchair toppling. Think some posters are being a bit harsh on you - this wasn't your fault!

BornToShopForcedToWork · 26/07/2012 18:06

Hi,

Sorry was out and about and couldn't reply. I didn't pay it by credit card but with my debit card and only the top is broken. It works fine but it annoys me as its badly cracked. I wont go to the apple store the next few days as it will be crazy in London with the Olympics etc.

OP posts:
GhostShip · 26/07/2012 18:08

You pay for it yourself!

Why do people think they can claim for everything. Confused

Apple will offer you a crash replacement for 200 quid by the way.

GhostShip · 26/07/2012 18:09

They will never ever repair a cracked or shattered iPad, always replace. They give you the option of taking it elsewhere to be 'fixed' but I wouldn't.

hairylemon · 26/07/2012 18:09

Do you live near a market? Always stalls on them that can replace cracked screens

ImperialBlether · 26/07/2012 18:11

My debit card would cover it.

It's worth checking whether you have insurance with your bank. You wouldn't necessarily know it - Google the type of card you have with the word 'insurance cover' and you might find you have it.

SilkySmith · 26/07/2012 18:11

You

weren't you holding the buggy?

Floggingmolly · 26/07/2012 19:34

Credit card insurance doesn't cover things like this. If you have house contents insurance it may?

glastocat · 26/07/2012 19:37

Itsno good phoning them, they will just give you the repair cost! You must make an appointment at the apple store and throw yourself on their mercy. It worked for me.

Floggingmolly · 26/07/2012 19:47

Not for me, Glastocat Sad £200 down the bloody drain...
