Stockpiling vacuum packed food in case of war

My friends husband has bought a couple of thousand pound worth of vacuum packed food in case there of an imminent war... Euro crisis, Syria and Middle east problems... China and Russia power dynamic. What do you think? Is this sensible or deluded? I would have said deluded but I don't want to be dismissive of her and her husband. He does quite a lot of research but not sure it's from valid sources.

I read that as "stock piled vallium" and thought, thats one way to do it!

EclecticShock · 25/07/2012 21:32

Maybe he should be doing that instead :)

FutTheShuckUp · 25/07/2012 21:32

Is he bi polar?

EclecticShock · 25/07/2012 21:33

I don't know... Thats why I'm canvassing opinion. Now, I was quite shocked when she told me but then I thought maybe he's just being well prepared? Oh I don't know...

I suppose that's the question, is be deluded or had he got a valid reason for doing it? Worried about him, I guess.

FallenCaryatid · 25/07/2012 21:35

Let's hope he's thought of a water source.

EclecticShock · 25/07/2012 21:35

Please ignore the stupid typos on my phone.

Ther were a few loons who did it during the cold war. Lots of baked beans. I sagely nod. Has he built his radioactive shelter yet? just in case?

WhereYouLeftIt · 25/07/2012 21:36

"He does quite a lot of research but not sure it's from valid sources."
Sounds like he's been spending too much time on the conspiracy theory sites, TBH. Or reading "The Kraken Wakes".

tartyflette · 25/07/2012 21:36

I thought that the famous 'countdown to midnight' clock which was supposed to show how near we were to total meltdown has actually moved backwards since the end of the Cold War and now that the nuclear threat has receded somewhat. Does she have any specific inside knowledge. i.e. Does she work for the MOD or GCHQ[wink?] Or is she just paranoid?

EclecticShock · 25/07/2012 21:36

Well, that's what I said, you need more than food... Water, antibiotics, civility...to survive the kind of thing he's thinking of.

OP posts:
hiddenhome · 25/07/2012 21:37

Is he one of these people who has an underground bunker, a pile of weapons and survival equipment and goes around dressed in army gear with a matching headband?

VivaLeBeaver · 25/07/2012 21:37

So how long will it last? Will he have to replace it all every couple of years.

Deluded in my opinion.

RambleOn · 25/07/2012 21:37

You lot will be laughing on the other side of your faces when you can't find your OFRSs Grin

EclecticShock · 25/07/2012 21:38

No idea if paranoid... That's what I'm worried about. I wonder I'd he'll build a bunker next... Not sure how he bonks he will keep all this food safe from maruaders.

OP posts:
WhereYouLeftIt · 25/07/2012 21:38

I must admit I have quite an impressive pantry stocked with an awful lot of loo rolls enough food to last us for months, but it's been built up slowly on the back of BOGOFs and I see it as cushioning us against price rises, not the Zombie Apocalypse.

EclecticShock · 25/07/2012 21:38

Not bonks! Thinks...

OP posts:
GreenEggsAndNichts · 25/07/2012 21:39

Clean water will be the most important resource he'll need to begin with. Suspect stocking up on home water purification kits will be next. :)

EclecticShock · 25/07/2012 21:40

Lasts 3-6 months. Do you think he needs some kind of professional help or so you think he's entitled to his opinion and she should just leave him to it?

OP posts:
RambleOn · 25/07/2012 21:40

Survivalists generally have thought out personal protection as well eclectic, firearm/crossbow etc

EclecticShock · 25/07/2012 21:41

What's ofrs?

OP posts:
catus · 25/07/2012 21:42

He does sound paranoid, certainly. But, it could be harmless if not too extreme? After all, there will be a war at some point in the future, just not likely in our lifetimes, but I guess you never know.
DH works away during the week, and sometimes I worry about unexpected international problems leading to the closing of borders. I don't do anything about it, obviously, but the thought of it crosses my mind quite regularly.

tartyflette · 25/07/2012 21:42

We shall just sit it out here. DH is thinking of drilling for water; he's sure there is a source somewhere in the garden. I am a hypochondriac so have lots of medicaments. And loads of jam, it lasts for ever. Ditto booze. We will be fine. Actually, we will need a shotgun to keep out the zombies, I suppose.

EclecticShock · 25/07/2012 21:42

You think he may be bought weapons?

OP posts:
WhereYouLeftIt · 25/07/2012 21:43

" Not sure how he thinks he will keep all this food safe from marauders."
In "The Kraken Wakes", she built a false wall in the basement to hide the food behind until they would be at the country cottage again. But the invaders from space had already landed before she did it.

And in Blast From the Past Christopher Walken had a full nuclear bunker.

Yes, I read and watch a lot of sci-fi. Does your friend's husband do this too, OP?
